I had no idea you could play Snake within Fasttracker! Also what's that with "Triton" difficulty? (The name of your group?) Thanks for sharing a piece of history. I was born in the late 90's, so I did grow up playing videogames in my childhood that had tracker / mod music used in 90's PC videogames (e.g. Jazz Jackrabbit, DX-Ball, and a couple of indie games like Bubble Bobble Nostalgie and Gold Sprinter), but I only found out about the demoscene on KZbin in my teens (in the 2010's), and to this day, tracker music is still a comfort background music to just do work to, in any phase of my life. Thank you for sharing a piece of your history and what it was like growing up with the demoscene. I suppose as a visual artist myself, the closest equivalent experience I had in my teens was participating in game jams with fellow friends, where we had different team members working on the art, sound, music, programming and design of a game.

The Triton group created Fasttracker 2, alas I was not a member. I was only in net-labels for tracker music and submitted my tracks to the music compos at the parties. It is and was so nice to experience and explore how art can be created with the help of computers. I am happy that this culture continues to exist, until recently I had totally neglected/forgotten the demo scene. Jazz Jackrabbit is a game dear to my heart, I still have the CD-Rom. The music is so nice. Thanks for the nice comment!

I want to thank you guys for subscribing and being excited. I also want to warn you that what you are seeing is unfinished and buggy. I expect that I will need another year or so to make it somewhat polished and user friendly. There is currently a bug where the app freezes after saving and then reloading a file. I tend to be very emotional and frustrated about the slowness of the progress and I believe several viewers had been excited about the project but lost interest or have forgotten about it as well. This is natural and I hope the cases of disappointment will gradually decrease over time. I CANNOT believe I haven't found this project sooner, or really anything like it. The 3DS seems like a super obvious device to write a dedicated tracker for, because it has a whopping 32 HARDWARE PCM CHANNELS, and I think 10 can be pulse waves and 2 can be noise channels! on top of that it also has a DSP, so it should be the ultimate portable tracker music making device! but nobody's really done that so far!!! I don't care about how pretty the UI is, I just want to be able to get real nitty gritty with the sound programming- I'm not a music person by any means but I am a nerd and I freaking love this stuff!
@NoiseCommander3DS28 күн бұрын
The app is doing all DSP in software because I don't understand enough about the Teakra DSP and could not find any example code to get a grip. I did use it at first as it it is exposed in libctru, but moved to the software way eventually. As I understand it, it is programmable but the default DSP firmware program is used by most if not all apps. Libctru exposes 24 channels with a filter on each. But I did not find a way to control routing or write custom effects and that way it would not have been possible to implement buses and record the groupt-signals to the SD card. There is Nitro-Tracker for the DS (there is a 3ds port called nitrous) which is very close to Fasttarcker 2 and I recently found out that it does use the Teakra hardware for playback. But the effects column was hidden because it is not finished. It does not provide effects. It would be amazing to use Teakra for more performance. But with what I have we also get 24 mono channels, four mono bus groups plus a few effects and SD recording. It's all mono due to CPU resources. The new 3ds could do stereo easily though, I believe - will get to that in the future. But I imagine the battery life could benefit from the hardware? By the way I did not know about the pulse/noise hardware features, is that so? I guess you can program it as you like if you know the hardware well. Anyway, thanks for being excited, makes me happy 😊

@@NoiseCommander3DS is it running on top of the 3DS's operating system (home menu is accessible) or is it bare metal? the CPU shouldn't have to be used too much since sample start/end/loop points, volume/panning, pitch, etc. are implemented in hardware. some arm11/arm9 assembly could also help optimize it- I know Gameboy assembly but want an excuse to finally really learn ARM assembly.
@NoiseCommander3DS27 күн бұрын
@@reverseretro1961 NC is a homebrew app developed in c++ with libctru using the devkitpro tool-chain, so it runs alongside with the OS like games. I am not good at deciphering assembly code but bare metal sounds exciting :D All the features you mention are exposed in libctru's ndsp c headers but I could figure out if/how to grab the mixed signal back or do custom routing, custom effects etc, that's why I paddled back. Also, the headers to mention reverb/delay effects but they are not accessible. I assume these effects may be part of the default dsp firmware program but are not yet fully exposed in libctru. I did play with the filters, they are fun and yes it uses very little cpu then.

Yes but rarely. I collected a lot of hardware-grooveboxes and I tend to make loose hip hop- or breakbeat loops but not finish tracks. I had planned to talk/showcase some of them but didn't find time.
