This is glorious! So far above the norm for choral singing -- but standard for so many years at Westminster. This is what Gregory Dell'Omo worked to end in favor of the mediocracy of Ryder College/University.

My first year it was the opening hymn at the first Chapel Service of the year. By the second verse I was in a puddle of ecstatic tears! Still does it to me!

@@rah62 Who are you? Who do you want to be? You have the brain of the last raisin in the box. This is a review by Paul Hume of the Washington Post on the alleged singer: "Miss Truman is a unique American phenomenon with a pleasant voice of little size and fair quality - (she) cannot sing very well - is flat a good deal of the time-more last night than at any time we have heard her in past years - has not improved in the years we have heard her - (and) still cannot sing with anything approaching professional finish." Other critics agreed. You know nothing about singing or music in general. Get lost, Karen.

We sang this arrangement at my high school in 1975 (and years before that...and years after that... for all I know they still sing it!) Anyway, the joke in the choir was that you had to sing the Wilhousky arrangement of Battle Hymn as a graduation requirement!!

1 I know not how that Bethl'hem's babe could in the Godhead be; I only know the manger child has brought God's life to me. 2 I know not how that Calvary's cross a world from sin could free; I only know its matchless love has brought God's love to me. 3 I know not how that Joseph's tomb could solve death's mystery; I only know a living Christ, our immortality.

this hymn was written on Tyneside, very much a mining community. As Charles looked up the Tyne valley at evening tide, he looked upon the fires that burned among the mining communities and his prayer for these mining people he was soon to preach the gospel to, would catch the flame of God's grace and salvation, which many did of course. Most villages in the area began to worship the Lord and sing his praise. May the word swiftly run again and be mighty to prevail in these hideously sinful days.

The truth needs a hearing again if we are to realize the manifest blessing of God upon our witness. It may not be palatable for this wicked and perverse generation, but we will be the loser if you continue to marginalize it.

I love this entire album. My parents bought this for me at Texas Southern University when William Dawson was invited there by Gloria Duke, music teacher in HISD, Ryan Jr. High. She had been one of his students (1936-40) along with my Dad and Mom, 1934-39 at Tuskegee Institute. HISD had gotten 4 students from each Black Junior High School to sing under Dawson’s direction. The auditorium was full!! He was a great, smart, talented and kind gentleman. ❤
