I don’t think the Christians on this Zoom call understand what is implied by Dr Ehrman’s statement. Ehrman claims the beliefs of Jesus were adulterated. The fact Jesus’s beliefs could be adulterated proves Jesus was not a god. Thereby, the entire business of Christianity is a lie. How are you people still Christian?

Bart - what we see is not all there is. We come here from somewhere - and we go somewhere. Immortality of the soul predates Plato - I'm sure he isn't the first to think this. No one knows how old the Zodiac is - likely predates all known civilization known today. Have you read the famous poem from the apostle Paul's home town that he quotes from in Acts? Or "The Real Meaning of the Zodiac, by Joseph Seiss - 1880's? It tells a story - intelligent men of old counted widom by understanding it.

Regarding preaching of Hell as a major driving factor of the spread of Christianity, it happened not only in early Christianity, But also during many revivals throughout the centuries where charismatic preachers (e.g. Wesley, Billy Graham at least in his prime age) emphasized Hell/punishment in their preaching/sermons.

What did the early church say about hell. You're leaving a 1700 year gap in your history of Christianity there from the start of Christianity to John Wesley.

I always enjoy your videos Professor Ehrman, they are very educational and informative. I was a baptist christian since 1995 but, I always noticed very odd things. Many things made absolutely no sense to me. After the passing of my beloved son in August 27th 2022, I completely left the church and now I have no desire to ever go back to church. My son & I suffered a lot before his passing so, I feel that every religion especially Christianity is all man made up. I have been doing a lot of research all kind of research and I came to a conclusion that I want no church in my life. I don't need church to do what is right. We all know right from wrong and we need to use our brains.🧠 this life is all about making good choices. Thank you and hope to meet you one day in person. Keep up the good work Professor Ahrman 🙂

I do not endorse what Ehrman is saying. A prior post of mine ending up under a comment as if I was endorsing it. Repeat I do not endorse Ehrman. His saying that Paul never knew Jesus contradicts all accounts over the centuries and is serious misinformation. To lie is serious to lie about the Gospels and put one’s own spin on them is very very serious and very wrong.

@ My argument would be, as I already stated an agnostic setting himself up as an expert on religion is ridiculous and bogus. If he points out why he is an agnostic or disagrees with any religious belief or practice that would make sense. As an agnostic interpreting religion as if he is someone who not only believes but knows makes no sense whatsoever. Again, the definition of religion is that to which we are bound. In the West among philosophers consciousness is defined as ‘the hard problem.’ In the East in Religion and Philosophy consciousness is defined as God: Omnipresent; Omniscient: and Omnipotent. Humans share in consciousness or God. We have consciousness, we are not consciousness. As Muslims rightly say; there is no God but God. Jesus never claimed to be God. He said; I and my Father are one, being one with God through Christ consciousness is not being God. He said why do you call me good, only God is good. He rejected being worshiped as the Deity although he said to his followers; ye are gods, meaning we share through our consciousness in the consciousness and awareness of God.
@ALavin-en1kr
@ALavin-en1kr 7 күн бұрын
An additional point, I have to comment when I see an agnostic ‘explaining’ religion or commenting on it as an expert. Again, there have been many great theologians in the Church and still are. They believe in God and see religion as what it is defined as; that to which we are bound. In other words religion is reality and reality is religion and we are bound to both; one and the same. A person who is an agnostic does not see or understand this, so why try to explain what you do not see or understand. Rather try to explain why you do not see or understand, that would make more sense. Let him give his reasons for why he does not belief rather than, obnoxiously, interpreting what he does not either believe in or understand. No matter how. much he has studied the information in relation to religion without a religious perspective his interpretation is opinion and should be billed as such, not as expertise.

Bart: the Jews never tried to make converts? The Bible: “Woe to you teachers of the law and Pharisees… you travel over land and sea to win a single convert…” (Matthew 23:15).
@Allothersweretakenn
@Allothersweretakenn 9 ай бұрын
Matthew 23:15 is typically not seen as an instruction for jews to make converts, but rather as a critique of the way the Pharisees and scribes were making converts during Jesus’ time. Jesus criticizes them for their hypocrisy and for focusing on outward conformity to religious law while neglecting the deeper, moral and ethical demands of the faith. You HAVE to read the passages if you hope to stand any chance of understanding the text

Bart should stop teaching, he has no idea what the Word teaches. Bart is not a Christian, never was, the scriptures are spiritually understood, he never had spiritual understanding. Romans 1:22 "Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools" . Bart, scripturally speaking, is a fool and should be ignored, this lecture clearly shows what nonsense he teaches, it's nonsense.
