Write it down and picture what it will look like and FEEL how it will feel. Feel grateful and proud of your progress to get there.

@@effectiveeffortconsultingADHD I'll try it but I don't think it will work. I have bad depression. nothing brings me joy in life that used to. I will try writing it tho - thank you for replying to me.

Consider thinking of ADHD as if it were a tablet's operating system. When too many apps are running simultaneously, the tablet may slow down due to the overload. Similarly, individuals with ADHD might experience challenges when trying to juggle multiple tasks at once. It can be helpful to approach tasks one at a time, closing 'mental windows' to focus and reduce the feeling of being overwhelmed. This strategy can aid in managing attention effectively and increasing productivity.

Question: How do I (ADHD brain) train myself into delaying gratification or using delayed gratification as a motivational tool to accomplish things? I ask because so far this has failed tremendously. That carrot (e.g. Fortnite, a marshmallow, etc) is just too far away. Too, too far. Entirely too far. Here is what happens to my ADHD brain when I try it: 1) I begin to resent the carrot for being inaccessible and I will eat it anyway. 2) I will forget that the carrot was off limits as I begin working on my goal, get distracted, and mindlessly reach for the carrot 3) I will finish the task, but only because I had distracted myself into forgetting about the carrot. By the time I remember the carrot it is no longer a motivation and I am "drifting." 4) If I REALLY kill myself into accomplishing the goal on Survival Mode, I eat the carrot but it has lost all flavor and I don't even want to finish it. I am usually emotionally hungover with resentment and exhausted by this point. Very dark. Have you run into these problems with ADHD clients?

Hi Eudia, make an schedule. Make a meaningful schedule. Start celebrating successes on the progress you make with things that matter. Build muscle and confidence until you can add in additional tasks/goals/ into your calendar/schedule. Slowly and deliberately Learn to love and embrace consistency. All the best, David

I have struggled with homework for the past twenty years of taking college and master's level classes. I could not focus and I could not complete assignments on time. Last year I went to Dr. Murphy and sat down with him to come up with some concrete plans to ensure my coursework was done. He outlined several solutions to make the coursework much more manageable. He helped me manage my time, plan out assignments, and encouraged me to utilize the library for my projects so as to avoid distractions. He checked in on my progress. For the first time in my college career I got a 4.0 last semester. I could not have done it without utilizing the techniques David taught me.
