📚 "A Complicated Love Story Set in Space" by Shaun David Hutchinson, a book I devoured about a year ago, is an absolute gem in the world of YA science fiction. 💫 Hutchinson masterfully weaves together elements of romance, mystery, and mind-bending science fiction, creating a story that's as intricate as it is heartwarming. The characters' complexities and their journey through space and emotions kept me utterly engaged. 🚀 If you're looking for a mind-bending, emotionally rich story that defies genre boundaries, "A Complicated Love Story Set in Space" should be at the top of your reading list. 📖 #BookReview #MemorableRead #AComplicatedLoveStorySetInSpace

I would be SO smug about that bookshelf if I was you, especially the extra step of cutting out all the decorations. When the tumblr posts showed up, I started cackling. So much character packed into this! Hearing about throwing out signed Kenneth Oppel books did hurt me but in a very hypocritical way because I have absolutely donated a signed YA book and never looked back.

I am currently reading it. And so far I like Nadi and Ianthe and Ysbeta. I have mixed feelings about Beatrice tho. I agree that the world building is really nice. Overally enjoying the book so far.

i was so happy to see that you uploaded! i'm glad that you are getting better and i'm so proud of you for taking that trip to Toronto 🤧 reading for recovery series sounds pretty exciting, can't wait to hear you talking about 'the body keeps the score' in depth. i read this book last year and to say that it was life changing would be an understatement - i now better understand how my own brain/body works, why i experience certain things, and what my best friend dealing with ptsd might be going through. i'm currently reading 'women who run with the wolves' and i personally find it very beneficial for my mental health as well, since it reminded me of how important it is not to forget about the things that i like (being art and diy). it resonated with you saying that you don't want to lose the things that you love. i love the pots you're painting! and the lego set looks sooo stunning 😍

thank you for a nice book chat ❤ listening to you i thought that maybe i should read 'saga' - it's been around for so long and i think i've never heard anyone saying anything bad about the series 🤔 you've also pointed out to me that under/misrepresentation of the arospec is very frustrating to people who identify as aromantic i've never actually thought of it because all of the ace stories i read kinda align with how i feel about romantic attraction but i guess it must be as dissatisfying as stories revolving around sex to asexuals are 🤷♀️ maybe it's the heavily romance-focused culture that we're being raised in makes the accurate aroace representation so difficult even for people on the aroace spectrum themselves oh, and speaking of representation! i feel like comics and poetry are the media that are always a step ahead of time because of their format that is easier to spread and consume - maybe that's why there's so much diversity in them nonetheless, hope you start feeling better soon ❤

Hi! Thanks so much for sharing all your thoughts! I would totally reccomend checking out Saga! It's one of my favourite. I actually almost did my thesis on it but ended up switching to a different book last mine. I think you're right. I also think they tend to be seen as less 'mainstream' so they can get around the whole marketability thing if that makes sense? Thanks again for stopping by!

Hello! Loved your take on the show. Couple things for me: I also felt uncomfortable with Elle telling Tao about Nick and Charlie because it really wasn’t her story to tell. I understand she was pushed in a corner and that’s why she did it. Another thing is about that scene with Nick being in Charlie’s room after running through the rain, he takes off his soaking wet sweatshirt but then puts it back on to go back home. I can’t imagine having to put on a soaking wet and cold hoodie. I think also a lot of people don’t understand the reason they show Charlie on his tiptoes because that was one of the things on his wish list when he was talking to Tori on the bus. Nick pretty much fills everything on his wish list. I kind of feel like Tao was acting like a big baby when the whole relationship bloomed right in front of his face. I do feel like they should’ve included Tao at the milkshake scene whenever everybody else was finding out. On the other hand, I also understand that because Tao is said to be the one who outed Charlie that Charlie would be concerned about telling him for fear that he would do the same to Nick. Tao hints to this after Elle tells him. I have watched a ton of reactions to the series and most of the time whenever Olivia Colman shows up on her first scene almost everybody says oh my God is that Olivia Colman? LoL. I think it would’ve been great for Isaac to jump up and beat the hell out of Harry when Harry hit Tao with the ball. That would’ve been classic. Just a few of my thoughts. :). PS am I the only one that thinks Charlie’s mom was kind of a bitch? She was kind of rude.

I think "Aled" is meant to be pronounced with the emphasis on the first syllable, kind of like the name Alec, just with a "d" at the end instead of a "c". I think it's a Welsh name, and I'm not Welsh myself, but I've watched some Welsh language television programming, and I believe I've heard that name spoken out loud on something I've watched in Welsh.
@EmonEconomist2 жыл бұрын
Surprised to see the conversation between Tao and Nick so COMPLETELY misinterpreted. Tao literally tells Nick it's fine that he's not ready to come out yet. It's one of the best moments in the series and I hope you've changed your view of it on a rewatch. Agree about the wet shoes and Nick dumping his soaked hoodie on Charlie's bed though! But I guess it's awful trying to put wet shoes back on so I can kind of understand that choice.

Interesting. I just disovered Joshua Whitehead as a recommended Indigenous author and I very much appreciate your review of the book. I have not read the book in this review but it sort of sounds like Whitehead is maybe more of a writer influenced by poetry in how he may use shock value and explicit language and scenes to give Indigenous queer sexuality a place (?). I know sexuality is important in a lot of queer works, so that is just what I am thinking. As a matter of fact, a lot of even white Brit writers use the explicit sex in their work to emphasize queer sexuality (e.g., Alan Hoinghurst's "Line of Beauty" from the Thatcher years of England in the realist approach). Thank you so much for your review and this will help me decide how I think I should perceive the book/work. Enjoyed your review and I am now subscribed. And, btw, hello or "ya'a't'eeh" from Navajoland. Peace.

Aanin from Ojibwe territory! Thank you so much for checking out my review. I definitely think after having thought on it more and hearing Joshua Whitehead talk about the book, that the goal is to explore queer sexuality in a way that's a point of pride and pleasure as opposed to the way that it's been demonized in the past, and still is to this day. So definitely what you were saying with the British writers and then added the intersectionally with two-spirit Indigenous people and the discrimination that came with that as well. Thanks so much for checking out my video!

Yess I love Check, Please! The characters really make this story, I always feel good and in my feels whenever I read it. I was sad when it ended but thought it concluded on a perfect note. By the way there's a lot of other queer webcomics I can certainly recommend- I think this is a great series and would love to see it continue, being a big webcomic fan myself :). Besides the ones that I saw on the playlist that I was familiar with (Long Exposure- love this comic but need to revisit it, been so long, Sharp Zero- also need to revisit, remember liking and thinking it was funny haha) I can list out some of my faves: 1. Tripping Over You- Details the relationship of two main characters starting in school and into their adult lives- really sweet and you'll be invested in them quick. 2. Jamie- Title character (Jamie) meets a cute red-haired guy at his aunt's wedding and starts befriending him at school, also getting to know the guy's circle of friends. 3. Khaos Komix- An older webcomic, probably one of the very first I've read and maybe the first queer comic I've discovered. Basically each chapter covers a character dealing with their own sexuality and/or relationships with other people. Honestly regard it as a queer webcomic classic and is pretty underrated. 4. Rock and Riot- A much shorter but incredibly charming webcomic set in the 50s I think but with a very diverse cast of characters, all with different sexualities and gender identities, a load of fun! 5. Dumbing of Age- Probably one the longer webcomics out there haha, queerness isn't the overall primary focus but there are plenty of characters that are queer. It's essentially set in a university and has plenty of characters to keep track of. Notable in that this comic is essentially an AU of the author's other webcomic series preceeding it, with all characters from those series being reimagined into a grounded college setting. Not a comprehensive list haha but I certainly enjoyed these!

Great vid!! Gunnerkrigg Court is also one of the earlier webcomics I've read - honestly when I first read it I was just so amazed at how in-depth the worldbuilding was. Like you said though it was the characters that really got me invested into the story and the multiple mysteries that went on. It's honestly crazy how long it's gone on, it really feels like Tom has everything planned out with his story. It's one of my favorites and I'm glad you covered it!

Totally understandable. Some parts were really hard to read. I'm not quite sure where I stand with this book, but I get why some people feel it is trauma porn
@keiththebookie44233 жыл бұрын
@@sleepcreatecaffeinate6876 Well the very idea of "trauma porn" is weird to me. The way I see it if this was a non fictional book or like someone's memoir we would not be calling it trauma porn. Calling it trauma porn makes people who went through some of the things written in the book feel as though they are being invalidated. I do feel like Yanagahara was trying to establish the fact that things can get better but in the end it may not ever completely go away. I'm new to the channel but I will be subscribing for sure.

@@keiththebookie4423 Oh for sure, I totally agree with that. I think the biggest thing is including triggers and censors as I was not expecting a lot of the jarring content that happened in the book. I do think there's a danger in censoring content that can help those with lived experiences. There were part of these books that really connected with me in a real way I'd never read anywhere else and there were other parts that still haunt me because I wasn't prepared for them. Still an incredible narrative for sure. And welcome to channel!
