I understand that "over potting" has a lot of possible bad scenerios for an orchid. And i agree eith why people say not to do so simply because its easier than explaining the whole situation. But if youre going to say that orchids shouldnt be over potted, i would orefer if it were said as to why. Heres why i think people advise not to use a pot that is too too big; 1. Too much medium around the plants roots, will take longer to dry out after watering. 2. Because it takes so long to dry out, the drying out process ends up imbalanced because of the amount of area with wet medium. In example. The inner center of the pot will still be wet and much of the bottom while the rest is bone dry. Some roots may dessicate while others may rot. Hence why you see a lot of the phals in over packed spaghnum with no roots in the center. 3. Its very hard to be able to properly provide proper hydration as well as a wet dry cycle for your orchid when you cannot keep the pot balanced in moisture. And 4. Due to this obstacle it can cause lots of issues due to the fact that your watering care is so imbalanced. And im sure theres some other basic or side effect reasons but thats basically what i think this statement is advised to prevent. However... To say that potting an orchid is alright but not to big a pot because orchids like to be restrained.. doesnt resignate with me and i think that is just a statement that has evolved from the fact that they do NOT like to be in a pot when the water is imbalanced, when the evaporation of that water is slow and the when the care giver growing said orchid is unable to properly use that pot to benefit them and the orchid. Orchids are epiphytic plants right? So i cant believe they kike to have their roots restrained or that they like to be confined. I do believe and see that they like good water care and good and proper treatment to their roots when potted. But if you know how to use the mixture you have and how or ehen to get water your orchid based on that mixture.. then it can be no different than any pot. In fact it could be better if you know how yo use it to help you Not going against you or criticizing. I just think its important to bare in mind there are rules and then there are rules that arent teal rules, theyre just easier than giving the real reasons. I will say in agreement eith you though that orchid roots definitely DO like to attach themselves to things so if they fund domething to cling to and hold tight, they are happier it seems than ones eho dont get to cling to much. So in that aspect i can see where "orchid roots like to be confined" comes from. But roots that grow all over a tree, not confined ya know? I actually love the way you share your information and the way you educate. I can tell you have a passion and i just discovered your channel. Like what i see and i hope i do not offend. Passion does indeed create opinion in abundance. Haha Best regards and keep the good videos coming! -L

Sorry. I'm not one of those. Haha maybe I just have a problem with authority and following suit in general. Buttttttt The point is, thanks for the real as shit video and down to earth care advice. I must have a special Vanda. Not knowing about that little plastic pot - I cut it out. Drilled holes in a clay pot, put in the Vanda, added some lava rock for stability - and over a year later, it has bloomed twice, with no loss of leaves anywhere, and roots growing out the holes in the pot. Way more manageable when you're living up north and in an apartment.

Things to consider about watering. I'm from Indonesia, most Vanda species originate from Indonesia. In the peak of monsoon season we have rain almost everyday for at least 3 month, another 3 month off peak it rain but not very frequent, and the rest is dry season without any rain for 4-6 month. 90% of the rain here happen at afternoon, very rarely in the morning. And even in dry season, mist is frequently occurred in the forest and we will find the leaf is wet with dew in the morning. So many orchids hobbies here try to imitate what happened to the orchids in the forest by watering the orchids at afternoon or at night, including me. And I must say the results is much better especially if you grew your orchids outdoor and completely exposed to the element. But in a controlled environment like in a greenhouse, like so many orchids nursery here, most of them water in the morning, but it is mainly due to practicality.

LOL love your videos but One small correction, the baby plants are called: Kei-ki, not ki-ki. Keiki is a Hawaiian word for child. That being said...Question: Is it better to remove some of the Keikis to propagate another plant and not suck the life from the parent? Or better to leave them on?

Damn! You dispelled some MAJOR things I was sure was true! LOL I had always put that moss (called Pele's hair in Hawaii) to retain moisture on my vanda roots, since I live in the driest & windy-est area (Waikoloa) in Hawaii and do not have a greenhouse, just a home made shade cloth area with irrigation mist. Now I have to think about removing it... Also had problems growing Vandas indoors, so considered growing them in a vase...WRONG.. I have many different orchids so the ideal conditions of one orchid is root rot to another. Gives me hope seeing you grow other types of orchids with your vandas. Also Ty for helping me learn about all the BS out there on the Internet... Love the photos of your healthy, gorgeous vandas...

I love the information, but I will have to disagree with you about the water culture growing though. I have grown many orchids in water for years, as well as almost all aroids in water, and they do just the same if not better if done correctly. The fact that they arent "water plants" doesnt mean anything, because the plants adapt and shoot out "water roots" that drink when needed. Semi-hydroponic growing when done right actually take a lot of stress away from the plant and the person since the plant does the work itself to keep itself hydrated appropriately. I've grown 5 foot orchids in water, and 12 foot monstera in water, and numerous phiodendron and hoya, all with great results. Just because it's not something you're used to or don't know how to do, doesn't mean it not an option when done correctly and you degrade it. Outside that, this was a awesome video, thank you for the information
@orchidlife82248 ай бұрын
This is for Vandas and most orchids .... I can almost guarantee you have not grown a monster vanda in water culture , some of Tonys Vandas are over 200lbs of solid plant. do you have that going on with the Vandas you grow in water culture ????
@katearcher88815 ай бұрын
@@orchidlife8224 Most of us live in apartments or houses, we don't have space nor other conditions to mimic FL greenhouse to accommodate such large plants. I would be absolutely perfectly fine with a small-sized Vanda that blooms occasionally for me. I don't really understand why do you feel you need to react so defensively to people's comments. I realized that I should've read the description before watching the video "how to provide these orchids with the right culture for success in growing monster size Vanda Orchids", because it's certainly not a video for hobbyists growing plants in their houses in various climates.
