Why do you need to buy another mount from Touratech when Garmin does provide an excellent one? Isn't that an overkill ?
@PSANDEE18 күн бұрын
I would like to correct 2 things here from your video. 1) Garmin Zumo XT and XT2 can be used in portrait mode. 2) Garmin Zumo can be used with USB power, you don't need a cradle. You will loose some functionality like fuel tracking and such other than other it works well. Also, if Garmin Zumo units pair with Garmin Inreach devices, so you will have some functionality through Zumo. Most Important thing which not many people mention is Garmin devices doesn't need a cellular network for navigation.

You download offline maps onto the phone- done that on a cheap rugged Android phone. You don’t need cellular.
@PSANDEE16 күн бұрын
@@martyn_gThe video says adventure navigation, using a phone doesn’t come under adventure navigation. A dedicated GPS like Zumo or TomTom are built to work with satellite, whereas an app on the phone doesn’t do that.

@@PSANDEE Smartphones and Tablets without a built-in GPS interface are the exception nowadays, "an app on a phone" (that isn't ancient, or garbage-tier) absolutely can download maps beforehand and operate just fine without a data connection, just like a dedicated GPS device and actually do it with more up-to-date map/route datum and faster hardware.
@PSANDEE5 күн бұрын
@@erichlippert3433 Maybe it works for road users but not for adventure seekers. a dedicated GPS is something specifically designed to use in rough conditions and the level of GPS accuracy you get is next to none. Probably if you use it once, you wont go back to a smartphone.

ya but.... what if there is no cell phone signal? Some say you can down load maps. If that is the case, just d/l maps to start and never use your phone. Please explain. I like the idea of the DMD2 device, but it seems to have that serious short coming.

For anyone considering Garmin, I've been using extensively, for over a year and it's the very defintion of a love-hate relationship. TL;DR; I love the data it contains (Michelin routes, common motorcycle trails), and absolulutely hate everything else. Starting with the hardware which is dramatically underpowered (and all the features lag), and the painfully reflective screen which will blind you with the sun's reflection every once in a while, to the software side of things which is totally abysmal. The maps are always outdated, often containing dangerously wrong information (the sat nav will gladly lead you in the wrong direction on a one-way street). The map UI lags and drags frustratingly, beat only by how dramatic the experience is on the android's companion app (Treads) which is dra-ma-tic, even on top-tier Android hardware. Route editing is also very limited and counterintuitive. Sometimes there are also sync errors, some resulting in ready tracks being no longer accessible (though visible in the menu). The list of issues goes on, and on.... ...and yet... when you finally go through all those frustrating pains... you drive through and discover places you would probably never have otherwise, and (to some extent) that makes up for the BS you have to go through to get there.

Nice comparison, thanks. I just watched to learn about the DMD. Personally I can't imagine this day and age spending my money on the old school Garmin which can only do one thing, when the android phone or tablet can do the same thing and SO much more. I've been using an old android phone for years as navigation. But I can't see a dam thing on the screen if it's sunny so I just follow the voice guidance. Plus among other problems in the rain, I've melted a couple charging cables which left me with no navigation till I could go get another one. My old mount requires me to turn a thumbscrew to tighten it or loosen it every time I want to take the phone off to use it lol. Anyway I'm looking to upgrade after a season of fighting with this stupid old system.

Hi, thanks for your tutorials. I'm mainly (only) interested in the Garmin Zumo XT2, and have recorded hundreds of tracks. Do you have a video showing a good way to upload track logs and trips, etc. from the Garmin to a PC? From what I've seen so far, the Zumo XT2 is the worst of the Garmin device I've used in terms of recording tracks and ease of uploading. With others (like the GPSMAP66 series) you start recording a track, do your thing, then stop the track. Then, in the GPX directory, each track (from beginning to end) is stored in a separate file. Nice! In the Zumo XT2: a) ALL recorded activities are glommed together in a single HUGE GPX file. Once this file gets to about 20 MB, the device starts tossing older tracks (which is OK by me.) b) There seems to be no rhyme nor reason to how it breaks out individual <trk> and <trkseg> elements in the GPX file. Sometimes a several hour trip is contained within a single <trk></trk> element, which is OK; this is what I WANT it to do. But sometimes, even in a short 1-hour ride, it will break the single ride into many (5-10 or more) separate <trk> elements. With that introduction, what is a good way to upload recorded tracks to a PC? Being a software developer, I wrote my own app to read this huge GPX file and save individual tracks into their own GPX files. But it's slow and bothersome to have to parse the whole 20+MB file to get the last few days worth of rides, and it's quite annoying to have a single ride broken out into numerous separate track files. I so wish the track saving and uploading worked more like their other GPS devices. Does anyone have any thoughts on a better way for me to do this? How can I upload a single recorded track? Thanks.

Got the DMD2 T-865 tablet recently. The combination of GPS with handlebar controller and extended dashboard information via OBD2 ist very nice. However the software does not seem to be very stable or buggy.

Excellent comparison. You solidified my choice on the DMD T865. I think a standalone GPS unit is essential because I do not have want to expose my cellphone to the elements and I dont want to mount and dismount constantly. The bike I'm looking at only has a basic LCD so OBD monitoring is a nice bonus and really brings the older bikes into the 21st century.

How is the helmet compared to the Bell MX -9 adventure for the same price? Can we wear glasses comfortably? Do these have speaker cutouts and can you install the clip for cardo or sena? How is the wind noise at highway speeds? Does the peak catch wind?
@AdvTechMoto4 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, I have no time with the bell helmet. I had no issues wearing my sunglasses with the msr. I installed a cardo unit and speakers with no issue and has enough space. Wind noise is a little bit louder than a premium helmet, but most budget helmets are that way. I didn't notice the peak causing any issues, but I also have a fairing on the 701
