Who thought it was a good idea to rearrange what Maestro Leonard Bernstein composed AND 86 the orchestra?

I had never heard this song until two days ago when my son’s high school choir sang it at UIL Contest. He sings Tenor 2. This is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. My son told me that the first time they rehearsed it he knew it was going to make me cry. I was already tearing up when the song started. I was a wreck by the end! My husband of 31 years passed away seven months ago and this song resonated deep within my soul.

@staceypendergrast24002 жыл бұрын
@@englishexpert1989 Yes, it says that in the description. I had never heard of the poem either. The poem itself does not come anywhere close to the emotional impact of the same words set to this music. Neither do any of the numerous different versions of this song that I had to sift through to finally find this one that is the exact same arrangement my son's choir sang. Music is my heart language.

Love this. My favourite song from the album, and a really strong cover. Glad you left out the Nas parts, they're not on the same plateau of lyricism as Damian's verses in my opinion.

Aaargh! Once again another performance that completely misses the key pivot note. That one specific start of phrase midway through the piece, one criminally overlooked half note, that if properly executed magnifies the impact of the latter half. Sadly this conductor like too many others doesn’t see it. Where is it? Right at 02:30 - what should happen is if the men whack the ever-living snot out of that unison D (which is intentional - Bernstein kept it unison in the first place) it does two things 1) by putting such emphasis on the first note of the phrase it has impact like a himeola, and 2) it gives the women in the chorus a much better foundation coming off the rest straight into the money note. The result goes from limp to life-altering. Listen to a recording like that of Capital University and you’ll notice the difference. Bernstein put a number of obvious tools in that score to amp up the impact. Take the time to look more closely.

@@thomasmielke3890I gotta say, I’m with @kcindc5539 This vocal arrangement veers off-course so spectacularly, why even bother doing the piece if you don’t trust the composer. So much for the stunning moment when the piece takes flight into the soaring a cappella. Without an orchestra, that goose flesh moment was sacrificed. And, who thought that adding words and melody to go with them was wise? The extra words and notes were superfluous and condescending to the audience. And, unless I am mistaken, I don’t believe I heard all of Bernstein’s complex harmonies. I think they were replaced with pedestrian harmonies. And the ending? Really? Not only was this NOT an improvement on Leonard Bernstein, it verged on insulting. However, the SINGERS were terrific. I’m just sorry that the didn’t get to actually sing Maestro Leonard Bernstein’s Make Our Garden Grow.

. . . and, devoid of ANY dynamics. Too bad. This is a very talented choir. They were up to the Bernstein score. Too bad their conductor or someone didn’t trust Bernstein or the singers. It takes hall and audacity to rearrange this vocal score! 👎🏻👎🏻

In the verse, they're all bar chords, and I walk my way down the neck alternating between the E-string major and A-string minor chords. So: B - D#m - A - C#m - G - Bm - E. Chorus is A>A7 -- D>D7-- A>A7 -- D>D7 -- A - C#m - Bm - D (2nd part of chorus "All of Life: D - C#m - Bm - A) I hope that helps!
