FAMU all day. The arrangement is what killls all competition FAMU is well known for that. Most band directors can’t compose hits like FAMu.

#1. SU (band directors Haymer & Taylor were SUPER lit) #2. FAMU #3 TSU - not true to song, weird piccolo & flute parts #4 JSU - MESSED W/THE SONG...took out key elements plus went off melody w/piccolos & flutes #5 NC A&T - DIDN'T LIKE THEIR VERSION - b/c of that drum (corps bands use) that sounds like someone's knocking on the door

DISCLAIMER: Strong dislike for FAMU. They must hate R&B & the emotional intensity of these songs. They are the anti-SU. It was like the song was crying out to be put out of its misery. Terrible injustice was done here. #1 SU - stunningly beautiful, poignant, passionate arrangement & performance #2 JSU - (I actually never bothered to listen to theirs before.) #3 Talladega #3. FAMU - DISQUALIFIED for not even trying to play the song as it was recorded.

Because the 100 was getting destroyed on this night by the Aristocrats, I'm sure this song was needed for their spirit of heaviness

FAMU was dreadful. It wasn't even the same song. In reality, only the chorus reminds you of what song THEY ARE SUPPOSE TO BE PLAYING. No band should perform after SU. Fundamentally, every arrangement was flawed except Southerns NOT b/c of their musicianship BUT BECAUSE they were the most honest. This song is sadness mixed w/longing & hope. Those emotions were divorced from the other bands' performances. #1 SU DISQUALIFIED - TSU, FAMU, JSU. WHY? B/c the central theme & essence of this song is a lament - a cry for love lost or gone AND the song's main instrument is Johnny Gill's voice married w/the song's haunting chorus. I have no idea what the other three arrangers hoped to convey/impart w/the fanfares, dramatic stops & other shenanigans. Honest arrangement is best & one of SU's keys to success.
