Thanks for uploading this video. It's great to see how the track has changed over the years and also great to see the heyday of South African production cars.

Enjoy! - yes, they are the V12 MS670 derivatives; winners of the WSC in 1973 & 74 as well as winners of Le Mans in 72, 73 & 74.

@sinusoidalapathy : the semi's and whatever suspension mods he was running would have combined to make the car handle so nicely, plus he was consistently smooth behind the wheel. The EVO has been subjected to minor tune only - 15.4 KW over standard. I also presently have rev limit set at conservative 7200 rpm and shift lights to go ballistic at 6900, so some breathing space just in case. 'Not chasing best lap times yet; just high speed consistency and experience . 'Highly recommend Broadford :)

@sinusoidalapathy : Thanks - not nearly as hard as the car could have done! Best time of the day was nearly 2 seconds quicker than I was averaging here. Excuses?! First time at this track and totally knackered Kumho V700's Victo's, which lacked their usual progressive feel approaching traction limits. I also didn't want to lean on him under braking - no point, IMO. The VW has similar power as the EVO, was lowered & on decent semi's - driven hard with impressive commitment too from my view.

@photovideo270 Yeah i recall the Alfa drama :), when the XR8's were found to be illegal Ford pulled out and that was that really. IMO i think alot of teams/manufacturers from that era might have bent the rules a little such was the desperation to win.
@photovideo27013 жыл бұрын
@africankat1 : I never knew that the Ford team were also mucking around with the regs - I remember the big drama when the Alfa's were called to scrutineering after one of the Kyalami races and always thought that this was the ultimate death knell for Group 1.
@africankat113 жыл бұрын
@photovideo270 i'll be watching your channel closely looking out for new vids :D preferably Group 1 or Group N, i loved the older Production Car Championships. Do u mind if i ask how u got these videos? I tried awhile back with the SABC but they were clueless really :/ ps. the XR8's in this race were later found to have had illegal cylinder head mods - then started the collapse of Group 1 :(

@156GTASelespeed : lolss - will upload some more over time - enjoy them!

@africankat1 : I have lots more SA motorsport coverage of those days, but not sure whether there is any more Group 1 - I was a Formula 2/Atlantic addict then, before we lost those cars at the end of 1986! I'm (very) slowly converting most of the collection to digital and if I find any more Grp 1, you can be sure that you will find it here.

OMG, i was looking for Group One video for such a long time, thank you for uploading. Do u have earlier footage of the season involving the XR6 Intercepter driven by Serge Damseux?

Amazing, amazing stuff... Man, the memories this brings back. What happened to all these crowds? These days a national race meeting at Kyalami has one or two thousand people spectating, if that. And the commentary is the legendary Roger McLeery in his heyday...

While it may appear that the formula is a success story, it actually isn't. in the second race of the day, they now REVERSE THE GRID to make it "more exciting" The real reason is that the races would be boring and processional. Also, realistically, you can only compete with 6000cc, pushrod V8 engines, which means that you can't race Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Nissan, Porsche or anything that doesn't have GM, Ford, Chrysler or Toyota links. BORING!!!
