Harry Glicken missed being at Mt Saint Helens that day in 1980, due to his mentor David Johnson taking his place that weekend so Harry could go an interview for his graduate work. Harry never quite got over David Johnson's death. Later his work on volcano debris around Mount Saint Helen led to a landmark study on tall volcanoes and their tendency to collapse, which in led to a better understanding of the formation of hummock fields (groups or formations of knolls or mounds) near tall volcanoes. Glick was the first to determine hummock fields were caused by volcano landslides, not eruptions or natural causes as previously thought. But unfortunately for him, fate caught up to Harry on Mount Unzen eleven years later. RIP to all those who died at both eruptions.

USA really has had it lucky, with the exception of a few hurricanes and tornadoes were probably the lowest when it comes to natural disasters. We’re not a poor country and people rarely suffer in the thousands like other countries. This worries me because every dog has his day, or rather we can’t get this lucky much longer.

It's not that we don't get exceptionally bad events, they're just rarer. When Cascadia or San Andreas pops off, or when Tahoma finally got decides to go, or when New Madrid pops off, you will see devastation in it's thousands and hundreds of thousands and millions. Less frequent, more severe.

Fuck, the Krafts! I watched one of their documentaries when i was just a kid and i remember the ending said they had recently died in a pyroclastic flow... Fuck this was it... Oh man...

18:25 unfortunately I saw a pretty identical stuff in Pompeii. People who died killed by pyroclastic flows, it's an awful awful death... 💔😞

This was immeasurably powerful. Brilliantly done! No words needed ... the videos spoke volumes. WOW! I feel nearly 'gut-punched'. I have a better awareness of what it may have resembled to the citizens of Pompeii.

This clearly shows why Japanese traditionally believe in mountain gods. You know some shrines are there only to tell us 'No houses beyond this level.'

Thank god for the Snyder cut, Josstice League is an abomination.
I recently rewatched the two Justice League movies. Josstice League is still trash and I think the Snyder Cut might be my favorite comic book movie of all time. I'm hoping for the best with the new DCU, but man WB fucked up with this one.

The shot at 13:29 seems so erie with it almost appearing out of nowhere and bearing down on them. I'd love to know if there was more context behind this piece of footage. I know there were a few shots from people that were hit by the surge but I am not sure where to find them (unless that was it?). Amazing work man. You really did it justice
Good video. This guy is right, back then I do remember the media reporting on Pinotubo, but not much on Unzen.

Harry Glicken almost died eleven years earlier as he was supposed to be at Mt Saint Helens on the day of its massive eruption on May 18, 1980. He'd been working at the USGS observation point for six straight days, but he had to go to a meeting with his Professor, Richard Fisher, down at Mammoth Lakes, California to discuss his graduate work. David Johnston, his research advisor and mentor, took his place that day at Coldwater II station just five miles from the Northern Flank. That morning Mt Saint Helens had a huge landslide due to a 5.1 earthquake which in turn produced a massive pyroclastic flow, which killed David Johnstone (and 56 other people). It's considered ironic that Glicken died the same way almost eleven years later as he and David Johnson are the only two American Volcanologists to die on volcanoes (and by the same method). Glicken had already become well known for his detailed work at Mt Saint Helens (he helped map the entire volcano after the 1980 eruption) and his theory (later proven at other volcanoes) that tall volcanoes tend to collapse, called the "Hummock Theory" (based on finding fields of mounds or knolls (less then 15 meters in height) near volcanoes that are the remains of old volcano avalanches from collapses).
As most people did I watched the videos and was terrified of them. I had no idea they had been manipulated to such a degree. It reminds me of my manta "never believe what you see on the internet". In any case thank you for your clarity about what actually happened.
