The problem is that jazz as gone from the street to the college.... instead of doing music.. it now most selfloathing guy's whit a scarf who only play's scales and decribe their chords E9flat major 11 ..... instead of listening their ear and just play..... whem Maria Callas sing the opera she does not recite the alphabet 😂

Jazz was the dance beats of the day combined with the narrative of the blues and the harmonies of western art music. Jazz lost the dance beat part and the blues narrative part. It has become syncopated classical music.

Very well done overall, but I think you could have had more soft, romantic jazz. Almost all the cues are fast, really, hyper.....

I have always felt I had an ear for more complex jazz. Five or so years ago I went to a Joshua Redman concert. It was definitely not pop or smooth jazz, but very listenable music with interesting and swinging improve. I saw Redman again this year, and almost every piece was indecipherable to me: all very fast, very complex. It may be that I am getting old and my tastes are not sophisticated enough. Same problem when I went to hear Branford Marsalis recently.

very interesting observation david: there does appear to be great pressure now (amplified by social media posts excerpting virtuosic show off moments - is there anyone playing ballads on IG?!)) to be as complex, intellectual and fierce as possible ... maybe trying to get back to where Coltrane left off ... I guess as long as they are selling tickets they will be able to continue ... it's their famous names that get them these gigs - anyone without a name who plays like that will be found in a bar with 3 people in the audience ... Nothing against a musician for wanting to explore any territory they want! Branford is a millionaire who can do anything he wants ... I actually played drums for a band that opened for Joshua Redman over 20 years ago in Denver ... Brian Blades on drums sounded great! Internet spreaded the false concept of "all for free", but it´s not only jazz, it´s for every music played live, people simply doesn´t feel like paying for it anymore. I´ve played in clubs for a living untill early 2000´, then it was gone, not only here in Brasil, but worldwide. I´ve benn through VERY disrespectful audiences even before that. It´s really tough. But some of that is on jazz musicians themselves. I don´t go to jazz shows anymore. I grew tired of that arrogant mentality, guys playing a thousand notes for minute, playing for themselves like the audience doesn´t matter. I´ve seen that a lot and was mistreated by jazz musicians, you come to play and they start playing Giant Steps (a terrible song in my opinion) at a breaking neck tempo just to humiliate you, you know? The music suffer for all that speed heavily dissonant vanity and it gets very boring for the "not anointed" people, so to speak. P.S - The guy at 17:28 is great! He deserves better than that.

Great point Bruno about the internet - it astounds me that people will pay more for a cup of coffee then they will for a song or movie ... they even tip more for a cup of coffee or beer than they will for a song or for a movie ... The guy at 17:28 is Creighton Holley. He was a tremendous musician and a great man. I had the pleasure of playing drums with him in the same band for 2 years - he told the greatest jokes! Creighton can be seen and heard more in depth in my feature length film JazzTown which can also be watched for free here on youtube (or ad-free on AppleTV, Amazon Prime, Vimeo, etc...) I have met and played with both kinds... The bad apples certainly do not win over new fans! I was fortunate to have been mentored by some of the old school jazz musicians who played beautiful melodies for the audience. I honor those mentors in the film JazzTown (my mentors played w Ellington and Basie and Max Roach and Roland Kirk - great people - I hope you'll watch and leave a comment) The ability to make a living at music has gone up and down through the entire history of jazz going back to at least the 1890s in the US. The musicians always had another job back in New Orleans (or they pimps too). Reading the originators of the music speak about these conditions is a good reminder. The Autobiography of Pops Foster is a great book. He played with Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Sidney Bechet, Ellington ... all of the old timers. There were times when there was no work and he did Voodoo on the streets of NYC to make money (people then just assumed if you were black and from New Orleans then you knew voodoo magic). Many young Classical musicians are rethinking their futures. In a Kibbutz in Northern Israel every normal year a thing called Keshet Eylon is conducted where Super Top young Stringed Instrument players from all over the World come together for a week or so to play and attend Master Classes conducted by top established educators and Professionally active Musicians. A few years ago a group were surveyed and asked what they intended to do in future. The questioner said he expected to hear 'Degrees, Advanced Studies, positions in top Orchestras' etc etc BUT was floored when hearing that most were concerned at the possibility of making a decent living in a tough profession and were going into things other than music. This after Parents had invested vast sums in Lessons and Instruments and Students had devoted endless hours honing their skills....not wasted but ...........................!!!!!!!!!!!

Fantastic story! That is exactly the kind of awareness I hope Who Killed Jazz contributes to... Those student's you mention are quite smart to have picked up on that which their parents and teachers had, presumably, failed to convey: there are very few positions for classical musicians in orchestras (or in pro jazz bands) from which a living can be made. One of my former percussion students made into a high level graduate program ... the fact that a position (tympanist, for example) in any given major orchestra may open once every 40 years ... is nearly insane to ponder - the competiveness alone can lead to mental health issues. I'm not a musician, but I've been listening to jazz my whole life. I blame the American jazz stations. You got 50, 60, 70 years of great jazz music, but they play some of the most mundane stuff you can find. They don't even play the great Miles and Trane stuff as much as they should. I wonder if younger people even know who Herbie Mann, Eddie Harris, Milt Jackson, Wes Montgomery, Mongo Santamaria, etc. was

Thanks Jay - you raise a very interesting observation: I had intended to interview radio DJs that are friends of mine for this film, but I was trapped in Bali during the pandemic when I edited this using the footage I had already filmed during the making of JazzTown (which I hope you will watch as well (free here kzbin.info/www/bejne/f6LOd2iKfKdpbqc ) Contemporary radio DJS (on air personalities) have their hands tied by the music directors (and of course GMs) - even more so with the community supported stations where djs used to have a lot more freedom as to what they could spin: they are now beholden to spin what has been predetermined by the director: mostly pushing new releases... so you are right: they do not play the masters of classic jazz as much as the fans of that music would like - and since much of today's jazz music put out by major labels (radio ready) is rehash of the classics (the mundane stuff you refer to), it is doomed to fall short: great imitation at best... These Djs know this but cant do much about it ... One woman dj broke away from a jazz station when they turned more corporate and started her own INTERNET radio station: the TAVN NETWORK www.tavn.org/oah-1 People like you will help others find the classics by playing them and spreading the word. Funny you mention Herbie Mann. (and Mongo - one of my favs!) Denver was fortunate to have drummer Bruno Carr (also played w Charlie Parker) making it his home in the 90s - Bruno had played w Herbie Mann back in the day... then Herbie was booked at the JazzWorks where Bruno was house drummer. Herbie was on tour with his own group, but Bruno came down and we witnessed a warm reunion... Sadly Bruno died before I started my documentary work ... There are yogis in India who develop amazing kinds of control over their physical body - change their heart rate, skin temperature, tie themselves in knots, beam out certain brainwaves. My absolute fave, the pinnacle of success, is these rare masters who can poke a marble into their ASS and twenty, twenty-four hours later - spit it out their MOUTH! Holy cow! What's pertinent here is that it can take TWENTY YEARS or more to learn how to do this. What is this film even FOR? There's no POINT here - NOBODY'S "KILLED" JAZZ. It's played in living rooms, garages, clubs and halls ALL OVER THE WORLD, all the time. If you want to play music, you'll play music. I've been playing for 54 years now, and I STILL love to play music so I do. ALL this is is 30 people complaining about the pay. A couple clips of so-called "jazz vocalists" shrieking and warbling like escapees from the lunatic asylum.... real room-clearing stuff, there. And a couple of guitarists playing practice-room finger exercises. The world changes and these people aren't doing anything that anyone wants to listen to? So, WHAT? If this makes you stop playing, you're not a musician. There's no advocacy or ideas here - there's no POINT. So, like, I guess the whiners wanna go on welfare or stick a marble up their ass? Good riddance.

@ Respect to you, sir, for raising awareness & going deep into the subject as to what happened through this thought provoking documentary. If I had to guess, live performance ain’t a thing anymore and hasn’t been for some time now for most if not all genres out there. Jazz being the first one in the deck to go, hence the harsh comment. Industry’s elites are exploitative indeed, but to any and all music genres perhaps, but the rest is just times have changed and too many options out there with what to listen to, where and how to listen perhaps as well. No one’s fault imho.

I believe you are correct in assessing the devalued nature of live performance - like professor Walter Barr says in the film , "Why go out when its all there on your computer?" However, there are pockets of excited audiences around the world - one must goto where the gigs are (what they pay is another matter) - this has been true for jazz since 1900s. Music trends in the US tend to remain fresh for about ten years...then the flavor is all chewed out like an old piece of gum. From the very beginning, jazz was always the intelligent extension of current dance rhythms, Louis Armstrong made art out of "two-beat" music, stride piano came out of sheet-music ragtime, Basie and Goodman made art out of Paul Whiteman's commercial "Mickey Mouse" big-band, swing sound and then Bird and Diz made a SMALL-group art out of big band swing, etc. "Bop" remained fresh until the late-1950s when Coltrane came along with his "sheets of sound", free-playing concept. Coltrane died in 1967 and that's when acoustic instruments ran out of new materials. In the meantime, the pop-music world had created new, straight-eighth note dance styles...electric guitars, feed back, Jimi Hendrix and the Beatles "Sergeant Pepper" instantly made 60 years acoustic jazz seem like grampa and grandma's music...the Baby Boomers now ruled! Olde Tyme jazz horn players had no way to participate in the new scene...except for one: Miles Davis. He saw that jazz was dead because it had left the dance floor in 1945 to become an abstract art. So Miles did the logical thing: he hired an electric band with himself on electric trumpet and played straight-eighth music, which was the way in which music was spoken back then. In 1969 he recorded the electric "Bitch's Brew" album with the most brilliant young players of the era- Keith Jarrett, John MacLoughlin, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Jack DeJohnette and many others. During the next ten and final years of jazz, we were treated to one of the most brilliant and creative decades in all of jazz history. It all ended in 1985 when the immature and uncreative child-man Wynton Marsalis came on the scene and said that "real" jazz ended in the 1920s when it left New Orleans! He bitterly claimed that Miles and 'Trane played the way they did because of white, Jewish critics in New York. In one statement he simultaneously displayed, racism, anti-semitism and an utter lack of creative mind and knowledge of jazz history, not to even mention the arrogance of a twenty-something who never did anything of significance in his life...except to play Mozart very well...music from a very white, European. ha!

Radio Kid - you have written a most excellent overview and I especially appreciate your assessment of the fusion years (1969-1979 which I would extend through to Miles' death in 1991) . A couple points you make I would add some nuance: Miles continued to play a derivation of the jazz "that had left the dance floors by 1945" - Miles was still jazzin through the 50s and hardboppin through the 60s with the hip youngsters (Williams, Carter, Hancock, Shorter)... it was the late 60s when I believe Miles chose to regain the dance floor youth ... Wynton and the neoclassicists - yup.. formalized in the 1987 Jazz Preservation Act passed by US Congress... why do they REFLECT ON THEMSELVES? there is a majority of entertainers in jazz genre, they don't care about religion. say they are materialists not devoted to music herself. " WHO HAD KILLED REGGAE?" --never Miles or Dizzy did it, no musician dares for that. then who are so-called "jazzmen" ridiculing reggae music? reggae is a devotion, it is flourishing

@@BmakinFilm i meant i heard a song [sorry, don't remember band's name, but it was at "Radio Swiss Jazz"], a son in which some young guys mocked our culture, you know, were telling against marijuana, calling us gangsters ...whatever. yes we misbehaved [Sly Robbie threatened to liquidate the listener, or there was a fictional fight between a jazz sax player and some rasta] --but breggins do not deserve to be treated so. we are pure. we embrace every style, except if one tries to mock our music, not playing reggae on daily basis🪣Buckethead --i like him, can you believe it? even though i don't like idea of mistreating the Chicken and i always listen to my inner chick voice📻☢

I like jazz, i grabbed my 1st instruments end my 40th. I learned to hate (moste of the) jazz musicians (my age or older) i meat in person. Musicians playing tip only sessions, asking them for advice and lessons (yes, paid lessons in mind) ... "Oh, we are alle accomplished musicians ... bla bla" ... that's not what we are doing, you are not part of of "the club" - don't disturb our circles - attitude people. "Accomplished" jazz musicians killing jazz!

Thanks for sharing - what part of the world did your experiences take place - what city? Unfortunately there will always be those who from insecurity try to belittle others who approach them with genuine respect and interest. I would just take that as a red flag: they are not people you would want to entrust with your spiritual and musical growth. If you simply must have their musical ideas, ten just record them (on cell ph audio for ex) and then transcribe the music you want to learn. You can always hire someone on line to transcribe the audio for you, instead of trying to pay jerks for a private lesson. Fortunately the world is filled with beautiful and sharing musicians who will take the time to speak with you about your musical journey. I recently saw a Video on Jazz in New York where a top level player interviewed in a Bar stated that he was being offered about $100 in the hand for a local jig.....take it or leave it as there are plenty around to do the work. An old timer piped up and said he was earning that sum way back in the 40's.

This doco is at the imqge of what the music became, a bench of arrogant ass holes who jerk off in public for a handful of bucks and hide their emptyness behind unreachable music or a music they made unreachable. Jazz is not for the elite who doesn't undersdand it, it is a form of art expression, it is made to be felt. Jazz died the day jazz schools were opened to the public. Bluesmen take themselves less seriously, and still has something to say,, it hs alive. Gypsy jazz managed to renew itself more or less because gypsy jazz players still put some emotion in each note they improvise. Remember that Miles recorded the All Blues album live, on the first take. One doesn't live in the same world anymore.

I agree with you: The schools have managed to take the individual feeling (unique voice telling their own story) out of jazz - at the very least they have introduced obstacles by nationalizing the curriculum. I hope strong leaders are addressing this at conservatories now ... I have interviewed some for my upcoming film We Are Here: Women In Jazz (trailer below). As to Miles: it has been shown to be a myth that the album was done in one take. Presumably only the track "Flamenco Sketches" was done in one take, according to the book Kind of Blue... by Ashley Khan. @@e-lion6392 no one has ever gone into the improvised music field in order to make money. However, some are very successful AND earn a great living. Pat Metheny for instance makes challenging, advanced and beautiful music and the large BANK of a wealthy businessman. $10,000 is not bad for an improvising musician m.

@@ChromaticHarp some however, like Ron Bucknma, are shocked and deflated when after spending their life creating it, and placing it on a platform with global access, the gatekeepers pay out a hundredth of a penny per listen - it breaks an artists heart and spirit - he never intended to get rich but if a person can make $20 a month they can at least pay to maintain a website... then its salt in the wound to see people throw tips at bartenders all night for opening a beer bottle. That should make a musician question their career choice, but insanity kicks in instead, because poets are told to follow their heart and the universe will take of you. The universe took Ron out with some nasty painful cancer and he died miserably broke and heart broken ... He loved Metheny - yup, every now and again someone makes it - they find the right balance of commerce and art - that's the key - some improvisors refuse to care about the audience ...

The medium we're on at this moment is one of the biggest culprits. With so many high-quality concerts on YT and concerts by top artists available on DVD, the need for live jazz at the local jazz club has dwindled. Sad, but true. I grew up in the 70s and 80s near NYC, and I saw many jazz shows at the Village Gate, The Village Vanguard, and The Blue Note, as well as smaller clubs in the city and Jersey. Those days are indelibly etched in my heart and mind. Sadly, those days are long gone and will never repeat.

Tenor Saxophonist and street musician here. Tips are my life. House parties are bonuses. Open mics are for fun. I want a band to play with. Most of what I do requires only a backing track. If there isn’t enough foot traffic I will come up short on bread. I make ends meet with SSDI and family support. It’s not an easy life but I wouldn’t trade it for a regular job.

I would love to hear more about how you got into being a street musician, what you play, how you determined what you play. I know it's too late for me, in my 60s, after a long IT career, but I still think about playing.

Jazz has never dead. its developing by itself through the great jazz musicians. before it was vocal music of jazz. Now its the the only instrumental music of art.other genres is vocal music where always band lider is vocalist.
