Impressive, Do you recall what type/size fan belt you used? I have a 1920 seagrave in need of a starter pinion and fan belt.thanks
@fritzficke6 ай бұрын
I am sorry I do not remember; I gave all the paperwork to the buyer of the engine. I order the belt online at that belt only place. I measured the width of the pullies (3/4?) and used a fabricate tape measure of my wife's for sewing around the pullies for length. I paid for two belts as the first one was close but not perfect.

My first thickness planer had babbit bearings, and my current tenon cutter still does. They work, just don't turn them too quickly and keep them oiled.

Thanks for posting this. I have a 49 Ford with these bearings. Owned it for 40 plus years. Always talked about this process but never seen anyone actually do the work. Sort very advanced specialist blacksmith skills. Very hard to find someone to do this work today. Cheers

So these look thick compared to modern bearings? Like the plain bearings in my truck would be 100/1000 in. thick and these are 1/4” thick?

Not a 1/4 inch but they are a little thicker than an inset bearing

I work in the lumber mill pouring Babbitt guides for the mark 50 and a couple other edgers. It's very important to heat the metal that's being poured. Pouring Babbitt guides moisture is your enemy. 🧑🏭

@integr8er662 жыл бұрын
So what I don't understand is, you used a fixture in place of the crankshaft, so since they wouldn't be exactly the same size, is there an additional process where the Babbette is line bored to finished size?
@fritzficke2 жыл бұрын
We then "scrapped" the bearing for the final fit. There are shims between the bearing cap and rod or block.

the thinner the bearing the more important to have the block pre-heated or the babbitt can solidify too soon
