Excellent topic and video! There’s nothing better than a shower and feeling refreshed after a long day following bird dogs. I also truck camp to allow a longer range on fewer dollars. Your shower set up is first class compared to mine. I use a hand pump sprayer rigged with a shower head for garden hoses. I warm the water on my cook stove. For a shelter I use a pop up ice fishing hut, which is also for when I need a privacy bathroom (which is rare in the best hunting areas), and to get out of the wind to cook. Good hunting and safe travels to you.

Just found your channel and love it. Being from MI I really enjoyed those two videos. I could really feel you on one particular point where the bird was holding tight and you couldn't decide which way to move through the thick cover, so frustrating. I'm getting close to retirement and was really interested in your camp setup. My question is, do you hunt from one single location and just walk to different covers each day or do you break camp and move? Thanks for the great videos.

Thanks for watching and for your comment/question. What I typically do is set up camp and stay there for at least a few days. However, I'll hunt areas as far as an hour from camp. I just put a few things away in the back of the truck (e.g., coffee maker, lamp), put a couple of dogs int he back seat of the truck and go. I leave the rest of my camp setup behind (e.g., dog trailer, shower tent, awning) and come back to it when I'm done with the hunt. That has worked well for me. If I want to go somewhere further than that to hunt, I'll relocate camp to that other area. For example, I'm hoping to go to Idaho this season and will hunt one part of the state for Huns and after two or three days will relocate to a different region of the state to hunt Chukar. Unless it's something like that, though, I'll usually hunt the same general area and have one camp setup. Thanks again for your question.

The extra gas tank makes a big difference in terms of how I can use the generator. I went online and purchased a gas cap that would work with these Honda generators. Hey... thanks for your comment. Good question. Although, I think doves are actually pretty popular to hunt. Sandhills to a lesser degree but still some people hunt them. For me, I hunt birds that work well for pointing dogs... birds that are on the ground and will hold for a point. Doves and sandhills would be a little different. One might hunt those more like hunting waterfowl. Thanks again!

That's a pretty well thought out system. Just a thought: If you had a little air fryer and toaster oven combo you could fry your bacon and make some toast in that while the eggs are cooking. But, it's one more thing to carry. It would probably also work better with a propane stove to avoid over-drawing the battery. Do you freeze your game after you harvest or just refrigerate until you get home?
@thebirdbum9182
@thebirdbum9182 3 ай бұрын
Actually, an air fryer is a good idea. I also thought about a toaster but haven't tried it yet. Like you said, you kind of have to make decisions about what to take based on space. In terms of freezing game, that was my thought when I included the freezer... and I do freeze game if I'm going to be taking it home. However, a lot of times I end up eating most of the game while I'm out.. and if I think I'm going to eat it on at camp I put it in the fridge. Thanks for your comment!!

Looks really nice. I like that this awning isn’t permanently attached and can be used on both of my trucks. The only problem I have is that I don’t have a roof rack on one of my trucks, so that means I’m stuck using the suction cups. I have concerns about windy conditions like we have at the beach. The Outer Banks is famous for the wind. I like the idea of taking the awning off when away from camp, but would be concerned if the wind starts blowing it would tuen into a kite while I was gone unless I weighed it down with something. Thanks for your review!

@thebirdbum9182 3 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comment! I apologize for my slow response. I completely understand your concerns and think you are making good points. In terms of wind, even with the magnets I still use a zip tie to secure it to the roof rack when it's windy. I don't know if you would have any way to do something similar? Also, you're right in terms of the wind maybe blowing it away. If I'm leaving it for a while and it's very windy, I'll fasten down the two long sides of the awning to the ground using tent steaks. That seems to work... not really allowing much wind to get under it. I wish I had better solutions for you. Have fun at the beach!

Awesome video! Avid hunter and fisherman all my life myself. I just recently retired after 34 years with the same company. Can’t wait to go hunting FULL TIME, year round for all sorts of seasons. (You’re gonna LOVE retirement!). Truck camping is awesome! I even make my own camping/tail gate stoves as I have my own metal fab shop in my garage. Never got into dogs for hunting though, it truly is an art to know how to work dogs and such. Respect! Question: What o/u shotgun make and gauge did you use in the video? Also, what size shot are you using in woods for grouse and woodcock? If I had to guess, it was a 20 ga and you’re using 7.5 or maybe 6 shot with IC/M chokes??? Again, just a guess. I have neither of those two species out in SoCal.
@thebirdbum9182
@thebirdbum9182 4 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comment! I'm still several years from retiring I think, but I'm definitely looking forward to it. I agree on truck camping being awesome. I really have grown to enjoy that alone... and it does make my trips more fun. It sounds like you have a nice setup if you're making your own stove, etc. Okay, so I'm using a CZ Upland Ultralight 12 gauge. I do have a nicer Browning 20 gauge, but for some reason I prefer the CZ. Part of this might be that I don't sweat it too much if the CZ gets banged up some... though I don't want to do that either if I can help it. I am using 7.5s with C/IC chokes. I'm not confident at all that this is the best combination to use, but some of these shots can be pretty close and my reasoning is that I want my pattern to be on the bigger side (especially for the first shot). I'm also using 1 1/4 oz of shot. I expect you have good birds in California. To me, California Quail are a bucket list bird I hope to get to someday. Thanks again!

Thank you for your comment... and for watching! I like having a dog trailer for several reasons. I think for longer trips that are 1000 or 2000 miles from home it makes the travel easier for the dogs than being in the truck. Plus, I can pack a lot of extra stuff in the trailer that makes camping easier for me. I can make a video more about the trailer. I appreciate the suggestion. I've also had a couple of requests to make a video about the shower/toilet tent. So, maybe after that. In the meantime, I can tell you it's a Jones trailer... made in Texas. Thanks for watching! I don't know that I'm the best person to ask about scouting. I don't think I do a very good job. The first time I go somewhere (like this WMA) I do a little e-scouting with On-X just to get a general orientation... but you're right that this only gets you so far. After that, I just get out and see what I find. Over time, you develop your spots where things have looked good or where you've gotten into birds. On this particular trip, I would go out where it looked pretty good from what I had seen but found once I got into it that the cover was probably a little too thick. If I go back to this WMA I'll have some spots I'll try again and others I'll avoid based on my experience this year. Sorry I don't have better advice. In terms of camping, I did camp out of my truck. On my last day there were also some deer hunters (bow hunting) who camped there. The WMA's I've been to in Oklahoma have designated camping areas. Thanks for your comment!

Thanks Gil! I'm glad things are going well with Sandy... like you I'm hoping to make bigger steps with her brother Junior next season. Thanks again, Gil!

Thanks for a nice video and working with a young dog. You’re my kind of Hunter low-key take your time. Enjoy the countryside no matter how the hunt goes by yourself. Good luck with the hernia.

Thank you for your comment! For me, there are lots of things I enjoy about these trips in addition to getting birds. Of course, a good bird day is nice, too. Thanks again!

The more people I've spoken with about hernias it seems they are pretty common. Oh well is right. Thanks for watching!

Great video! Not only enjoyed it but I wanted to ask how does the extra gas tank work with the generator? I did notice that the tank is usually considered a boat tank n I noticed the hose bug do you have to pressurize the tank to the generator? Or does the generator just pull it over as needed? Again great video n look forward to more

Thanks for watching the video! That gas tank is like a boat tank; however, I purchased one that was already set up to run with this generator... which did cost a little more. You don't have to pressurize the tank. The generator draws gas from the extra tank as needed. I have used all the gas out of the extra tank before and looked to find that the gas tank for the generator was still full.... meaning that the generator doesn't empty its own tank first before drawing from the extra tank. The generator starts drawing from the extra tank as soon as you start it. To get it started you just have to have some gas in both tanks (generator and extra tank). Thanks again!

What rack/baskey is that on your cap?

Sorry for my delayed response. I was out on a trip to Oklahoma. The basket is a Curt cargo basket (www.curtmfg.com/cargo-management/carriers/roof-racks), but the tracks are Thule. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!
