The pregnancy ends on it's own due to various conditions other than by an abortion procedure. In the second case, ectopic pregnancies are not viable. We don't yet have the technology to implant the growing embryo into the uterus from the fallopian tubes, so the embryo will need to be removed to save the mother's life.

This is so encouraging. I feel like I cannot be pro-life and a Democrat but I am: I thought I wasn’t alone. Now I know I’m not.

If anyone opposes abortion outright, then there is a useful thought experiment to test the nature of your opposition. There are times when a dangerous, fatal event is unavoidable (perhaps in war, or a natural disaster) and tough decisions must be made as to whom we must protect, which people should be saved and which sentenced to death. We can use that kind of scenario to better understand abortion. Two buildings are in the path of a tsunami, one building is a school full of young children and teachers, the other is a building holding human embryos (or just fertilised eggs), the embryos (or eggs) outnumber the total population of the school by 1. You only have one helicopter which can reach the site on time, and only enough time to save one group, which group do you save? If you are committed to the idea that a fertilised egg or embryo has the same rights and interests as a fully functioning human then you may be committed to the idea that you must save the eggs and let the school be consumed. If that conclusion feels wrong, then you may have a clue as to there being an important difference between the rights and interests of unborn humans vs all other humans.
