Good point! However… that won’t work with RF lenses though. But still a valid solution if you’ve got EF glass!

My hot take on the R7’s problems is that it mostly appeals to Pros as a backup camera, but it’s simply too much of a step down from the R5 or R6ii for those folks. I those think people forget that the R7 is supposed to be a “next steps” camera for intermediate-level hobbyists working their way up to the big guns. It does have some obvious flaws, most of the hate seems to stem from a top-down perspective.
@coppensbram

Really good perspective here! It’s definitely a stepping stone to something like the R6 II. I actually made that step 😂

I thought the L series zoom lenses didn't extend the barrel when zooming? I have an EF 17-40 L zoom and it doesn't extend like the one in the video. The glass inside the lens moves within the outer part which stays a constant size front to back.
@coppensbram
@coppensbram 14 күн бұрын
That was the case for some of the EF lenses. But with the RF mount, canon has focused on making the lenses as compact as possible, and so they all have extending front elements. However, they just launched the RF 24-105 f2.8, which is all internal zoom. Honestly, I prefer compact lenses 😃 I don’t mind the extending!
@musicman8942
@musicman8942 14 күн бұрын
@@coppensbram Thanks for the reply. I really don't like the extending front elements as I don't think it's all that stable especially when you get to the higher zoom spans. Too much to go wrong. Oh well to say I'm bummed at this is an understatement.

Personally, I prefer zoom lenses. My go-to lens for portraits is the RF 70-200 f2.8. It’s expensive, but probably one of the best lenses Canon has ever made. If you’re more into primes, I’d suggest the RF 85mm f1.2. If you want cheaper, take a look at RF 85 f2. Hope this helps! 😃

@coppensbram
@coppensbram 24 күн бұрын
Hi there! Of course 😊 When you want to photograph a group, it’s all about the aperture. You’ll need to make sure it’s narrow, something like f8 or even f11. That will make the focus pane wider, and thus, have more in focus in your shot. Also make sure you set your shutter speed quite fast. For a 35mm, maybe something like 1/150 or 1/200. It’s usually best to use a tripod too! I usually shoot group pictures in burst too. Just to make sure there’s a good one in there with everyone having their eyes open 😃 Hope this helps 😎

Thank you for the kind words! I'm super glad this video helpful to you 😃 To answer your question: "b-roll" is basically all of the footage that is not the main shot. For example in these KZbin videos, the main shot (or "a-roll") is when I'm talking into the camera. What would you say is the best video setting for the canon r7 for vlogging ???
@coppensbram
@coppensbram Ай бұрын
I’d probably choose a wider lens for vlogging. In a couple months the Tamron 11-20 and Sigma 10-18 will release for RF. Those will be excellent for vlogs. In terms of settings, always use the 180 rule for video, so if you shoot at 24 or 25 fps, your shutter speed should be 1/50. Aperture depends on what kind of shot you want, I usually shoot wide open. I always shoot with Clog3 enabled, and have AF set to whole frame and detection to people. Also what is the best lens you recommend for portrait photography, indoors, room length is limited sadly (not sure what the min focal length would be for a full body photo). Thx!
@coppensbram

Sure! No, after turning off the high frame rate, the default is still 1080p sadly 😬 but it’s only a minor gripe. For the R7 I’d recommend the Sigma 18-35 f1.8. Alternatively, take a look at the RF 16mm 2.8 for wider shots and maybe the RF 50mm 1.8 for portraits. Or even the 85mm f2. These are all quite inexpensive.

Thanks for the kind words! For a photo booth, you mean you’ll be taking pictures of people at events in front of a backdrop? If so, I’d definitely consider full frame like the R8 or R6 mark II. These will work great in low light! And then try to get a fast lens for the dark environments, either one of the RF primes or an RF zoom lens if you want flexibility. I would probably opt for the RF24-70 f2.8 if you can stretch the budget. If not, maybe the RF 85mm f2 prime, or even the RF 50 f1.8. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have more questions :-)

@Stash_Studio actually I have that one too - I did a video for Ulanzi last year when they launched it. Yes - that one will allow vertical shooting. Do you need the fluid head for vertical shots? If not, maybe better to get a “regular” head - highly recommend the Ulanzi Zero-F38. You can always switch out the center column (they sell a separate piece) and add on a fluid head when you need it. Best of both worlds :-)

@@coppensbram yes I tend to shoot much more vertical content. I’ve actually got the f38 with the additional fluid head in my cart on the Ulanzi website but I really wanted to avoid travelling with 2 heads/columns/ or adding an additional base-plate to the side of the rig. @coppensbram you know, it's got me thinking at wide angle ranges if f4 vs f2.8 is really that visible on photos viewed on the phone. I am currently using the prosumer grade 16mm and 28mm for walk around and it's doing quite well for my style of shooting, but I've been eyeing the 15 35. I hope canon releases a 35mm 1.2 or 1.4, would be a nice one, but I'm not good at the 35mm range, so I just picked up a 50mm 1.2 yesterday and so far so good 1 day in, first world problems. Great video
@coppensbram

@RWAquariumPages I guess it depends on how often you shoot wide, and in low light. The 15-35 is a fantastic lens though 😃 And yes, the 50 1.2 is also on my wishlist. How are you liking it?
@RWAquariumPages
@RWAquariumPages 2 ай бұрын
@coppensbram honestly, I never shoot wide to be honest, that's why if I were to get one the f4 might be a better fit. I have the 85 1.2 and it's a wider version snd lighter. Nice and sharp, bokeh is nice but on web size Noone would notice the difference between the 1.8 and 1.2 to be honest, but it makes me happy so thats all that counts. 50mm for my style is used more range than wide or 85mm, but every image out of the 85mm length is magical
@coppensbram
@coppensbram 2 ай бұрын
@RWAquariumPages yes in that case, I can highly recommend the 14-35. F4 is still really nice, definitely can get nice bokeh and separation if you know how to use the wider focal lengths (just get in close and create distance between subject and background). And I can’t stress enough how compact and portable the lens is 😎 For the longer focal lengths I typically use the 70-200 2.8. But you’re totally right - do you even see the difference between f1.8 and f1.2 without pixel peeping on high res monitors? 🤷🏻‍♂️ I mean sure, for extreme low light, yes, it probably makes a difference. I only have 1 prime on the RF mount at the moment, the nifty fifty 1.8. I rarely shoot at wider aperture than 2.8 anyway. However, for my A-roll shots in these KZbin videos, I’d love to have a bit more background blur. My space is extremely tight so I could use that 35mm 1.4 or 1.2 once it releases hehe!

If you want the R7 to shoot birds in Flight you're going to have terrible banding in ES. The other problem with the R7 is it tends to lose focus when tracking birds in flight. On a burst shot of 60 shots you might lose anywhere between 40 and 50 at times. I travel sometimes across the state to shoot Eagles in Flight and when I was using this camera I was losing hundreds of shots a day and it was frustrating because sometimes they would be my best shots. I do have a love-hate relationship with this camera as I wanted to work. The R8 on the other hand is another camera that's in our family because my wife shoots a daily side-by-side with me. Her biggest issue is battery life out in the field. Apart from that she gets great low light performance she gets great images but she does not get the crop factor. The R7 has image stabilization as the ra does not but the R7s image stabilization is horrendous at times. Both of them have their pluses and minuses it just depends on which minus that you want to deal with on a daily basis. Unfortunately for me I still have the R5 and currently purchase the R6II, so when the R7 starts to act up in the field I can just grab one of the other two.. I actually just compared them all recently.

Yes indeed - makes sense 😊 I shoot video professionally and in terms of photography, portrait, landscape, street and casual. If you do wildlife or birds, get the R7. Another great one. Went with the R7, and man I couldn't be happier. I also got the 18-35 the internal ND adapter, and an awesome cage.

That’s a killer combo! 😃 it’s so easy with the internal ND isn’t it

@@coppensbram Yes, it is, and also not always, as it turned out that produces a substantial color shift in the whites when filming screens (iPads, MacBooks, iPhones, etc.) Any solutions, other than buying the standard adapter as well?

Hmmm an ND filter will always shift colors, maybe apart from the more expensive ones… Can’t you just tweak the white balance and color temps in Final Cut afterwards? And then save it as a preset. Or even better, hold a white paper or color card next to the screen in the beginning of your shot, so you can map WB and color to it in post in Final Cut!

And turn off True Tone and night shift on the screens too 😉

@@coppensbram Hey, thank you so much for these suggestions! I really appreciate it! Now that you mentioned I think it may be due to forgetting to use my white card to set the WB before the shot. I'll try everything else you mentioned, though I'm not using Final Cut. I am a Premiere user (I know it's such a shame, lol). I wish you nothing but success in the new 2024! You are one of the dopest channels. Your videos helped me pick the r7 and the Sigma, and now I am considering getting a second, though I have other things to invest in. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos! Thanks again!
