So in the context of what you were doing, I don't believe the model was using what is called RAG (retrieval-augmented generation). That's when it goes out to the web to look up information. When it comes to Magic cards though, you're talking about an enormous text corpus for the model to work with. It certainly hasn't memorized all the cards, while it definitely has memorized some. It's unlikely to have even memorized all the card names in each set, let alone their properties. Even with RAG, the only way for the model to understand all the cards is to read in a text database of them, which would easily exceed the context length the model can work with. So even getting it to spit out a deck of random cards from the standard format that fit the constraints isn't feasible, let alone a deck with strategic cogency. However, I believe these models could be fine tuned and / or augmented with actions that interact with magic card database to build a functional, if not competitive, deck. It's also important to note that the system probably can't even keep all the rules of the game in context. And I just checked and it appears ChatGPT only has a context window on the order of 8000 tokens. That's not nearly large enough to handle the supplemental text it would need to choose cards. Now Claude Sonet seemed to produce something closer to a reasonable deck on the first try (it also has a context window of 200k tokens). This 64 card deck was Standard legal for as much as I checked for its cutoff in April 2024. It's not a good deck and Dennick is already an issue: Abzan Midrange Standard Deck Creatures (26): 4x Skrelv, Defector Mite 4x Dennick, Pious Apprentice 3x Sheoldred, the Apocalypse 3x Graveyard Trespasser 3x Tolsimir, Friend to Wolves 3x Tenacious Underdog 3x Ao, the Dawn Sky 3x Lae'zel, Vlaakith's Champion Planeswalkers (2): 2x The Wandering Emperor Instants and Sorceries (7): 3x Cut Down 2x Infernal Grasp 2x Farewell Enchantments (3): 3x Wedding Announcement Lands (26): 4x Overgrown Farmland 4x Deathcap Glade 4x Shattered Sanctum 4x Caves of Koilos 3x Llanowar Wastes 3x Brushland 2x Forest 1x Plains 1x Swamp Sideboard (15): 3x Duress 3x Reckoner Bankbuster 2x Unlicensed Hearse 2x Fateful Absence 2x Tear Asunder 2x Tamiyo's Safekeeping 1x Farewell After a couple of refining requests it produced this. I don't know if it's any better besides the card count: Corrected Abzan Midrange Standard Deck Creatures (23): 4x Skrelv, Defector Mite 4x Graveyard Trespasser 3x Sheoldred, the Apocalypse 3x Tolsimir, Friend to Wolves 3x Tenacious Underdog 3x Ao, the Dawn Sky 2x Lae'zel, Vlaakith's Champion 1x Workshop Warchief Planeswalkers (3): 2x The Wandering Emperor 1x Elspeth Resplendent Instants and Sorceries (8): 4x Fatal Push 2x Abrade 2x March of Otherworldly Light Enchantments (2): 2x Wedding Announcement Artifacts (2): 2x Reckoner Bankbuster Lands (22): 4x Overgrown Farmland 4x Deathcap Glade 4x Shattered Sanctum 4x Caves of Koilos 2x Llanowar Wastes 2x Brushland 1x Forest 1x Plains Sideboard (15): 3x Duress 2x Unlicensed Hearse 2x Tear Asunder 2x Tamiyo's Safekeeping 2x Temporary Lockdown 2x Graveyard Shift 1x Farewell 1x Kaya, Intangible Slayer

That's better but still n ot achieving the goal of a Standard deck. Also isn't really a coherent deck outside of just having the proper color of cards. They don't cohesively go together. And it includes Abrade which is off color. I'm with you though on the idea that it's simply not build for, and not truly capable, of the task at hand, which was mostly what the exercise if about.

Hey, great video! Just wanted to share a perspective from someone who works with GenAI daily. While your approach is interesting, I've found that ChatGPT, being trained on older data, might not have the most up-to-date info. To make this work smoothly, you might consider a more detailed, programmatic workflow. For example, having a database to store card info, set formats, etc., could really help. Then, you can leverage ChatGPT's reasoning to piece everything together after fetching the necessary data (this is known as RAG). Keep up the awesome content!

Oh, I'm aware there are other methods. The average user won't go through those steps nor know how to do so. So functionally it's not a good tool for the majority of MTG players.

I just feel we're still a ways off from it being any better than just randomly picking a deck off of moxfield or mtg goldfish. I'm sure those sort of sites are where the programs are pulling from anyway but lack the context of why people made the choices they did. Still interesting stuff.

instead of continuing to say 'standard' legal (since this is a machine and not a human) why not clarify by saying standard legal in 2024? why treat AI as actual intelligence (it can add but will never understand math)

Standard is a defined term. It also wouldn't matter, because I specified sets. It also couldn't handle removing requests cards from the list and replacing them. Not to mention that is literally made up 2-3 cards. The word Standard was the least of the problems in the process. :)
@ilmistico90
@ilmistico90 Күн бұрын
I can see at least 2 problem with your prompts. 1. You give some sets name that can be confused with fake sets made and published on internet. Like bloomburrow that is only recently released. So in return you will get card like gloomshroom. 2. You give contradictory orders. Like remove that "name card" but then ask for standard format cards so the ai will re-put that back. Already asking standard legal format is wrong. Standard is a rotation and not the only one legal format. Also because like you said ChatGPT is not full update but oly partially.
@PowrDragn
@PowrDragn Күн бұрын
I'm sure there are several issues. But the main underlying point is that ChatGPT can't really do recent stuff. So, even with extended prompts, even playing it more after testing, it simply can't complete the task. That's really not what it's built for. Gloomshroom isn't even a thing, which was really strange. For example one of the prompts I used (I tested several) was: "Please provide me an tournament legal Magic the Gathering deck with only green and red colors using cards from the most recent 8 tournament legal sets published for the game." It proceeded to make up sets like "Fallen Empires Remastered" and "Infinity" as sets to use for deck construction. It even made up dates for them and also included LotR as legal for the list with a July 2024 date. The list it spit out for that was 58 cards. It had made up cards like Kiora's Complex and Prowess of the Wilds. It also had incurrate set attributions like Lighting Bolt and Alpine Moon (both not from the listed sets) being marked Lost Caverns of Ixalan. Or Embercleave as being from Commander Masters. It also classified things like Tibalt's Trickery and Embercleave as creatures. I'd say it has a TON of issues for doing the job requested beyond the prompts. And don't get me wrong, I'm well aware that the prompts can use continuous refinement until you find the language to speak to it. But I can say confidently that every iteration has a whole host of problems that I'm pretty sure aren't the result of the prompt since it's clearly making up information, cards, and not understand data that clearly available like set names for cards.

I think AI is a powerful tool but a few things. One is you have to know how to ask an AI the AI will somewhat understand what it is asked if asked a question in plain English but it gives better answers when given an entire thought process behind the question. Bing's AI I think is better at current data for Magic and understanding than chatGPT. Secondly, AI isn't really a good tool for doing human work but it's great at doing what humans can't do and in deck building that is brain storming solutions. Throw scenarios and problems at it let it guide you to a new ideas that you'd never thought of before. I think it's a bad idea to ask it to spit out full deck lists... I did ask Bing AI for a mono black deck list and it was mostly valid only illegal card was "Bankbuster" I assume it meant the banned Reckoner Bankbuster which is from an out of standard set anyways on top of being banned. Everything else was legal and a valid 60 cards and it even gave me a sideboard

Oh, I'm aware. I think it will always have the problem of not being able to do the human work of solving for the metagame and such. It will likely, at least for the near future, be able to give you a stock list from somewhere or just a random pile of cards.

I have a suspicion,and I'm might be wrong (most likely I am),but I get the feeling that ChatGpt does not really understand MTG. I mean,if I write a deck-building program (theoretically,possible,just don't know the effort/reward ratio), I would make sure that if I ask for standard legal,I got only standard legal,even if the deck is non-functional... Does ChatGpt even have acces to MTG databases? Like,set names,which set is legal in which format,which cards are in what sets...Because,at least for me,for an AI program,this is something that should be in it's capabilities.This...is very wierd for me. Edit: Or,maybe,not many people esking ChatGpt to build an MTG deck. I would only ask it to help me make a fantasy map from my ideas...😅
@graspop2010

Chat GPT is a large language model, the only thing it does is guess what is the most likely word to be next in a sentence. So it does indeed not understand MTG nor any other subject matter. It is also why it cannot do basic math, it works with language not numbers and no-one/not enough people spelled out on the internet that 2+3=5. It's just not something you would ask regularly, the more specific the problem, like deckbuilding or complexer math, the lower the chance that it can find the information online. As a result it just gambles on the most likely word to present to you, there is no "understanding" involved. Same thing goes with asking it if your tire will break if you cycle over a bridge that has a lot of nails underneath. It sees nails in proximity to tires and assumes you'll get a flat tire. The cohesion of a deck is not in the words forming the card names but in the colors and text on the cards. Those are not present in your prompt or in the expected answer so that adds another level of complexity the model is not able to deal with. Asking more answered clearcut questions like what's in standard etc. will likely yield proper results. Furthermore, the models are created to always present an answer, if it is unsure what the next most likely word is, it'll just make up stuff (like the inexisting cards) to be able to give you an answer. Some of these limitations can be worked around by including in your prompts that it can ask you additional questions if it lacks information etc. Creating a huge prompt overlay with a lot of information on how to deckbuild, a link to the rules, preferred sources like scryfall etc could also help a lot.
@PowrDragn

It still can't handle basic stuff like "Can you tell me the names of sets that are legal for Magic the Gathering's STandard format?" It spits this out: As of August 2024, the Standard format in Magic: The Gathering includes the following sets: March of the Machine (April 2023) March of the Machine: The Aftermath (May 2023) Wilds of Eldraine (September 2023) The Lost Caverns of Ixalan (November 2023) Infinity (January 2024) Fallen Empires Remastered (March 2024) Tales of Middle-earth (July 2024) At least two of those are made up set names. And one of the real sets has a completely made up release date of July 2024. My bigger issue with the system, regardless of the prompts I use, is it that it has tons of inaccurate information that can be searched up. I truly don't understand why it makes up card names and set names.

As usual, AI won't do your work for you yet in terms of creating your whole deck.. However, what about using it for some cool adjusting like "Can you please suggest board clears that work with blue or green?" or "What are some of the best commanders for a blue/white/black deck?"

In cases like that, it will just give you a list of things that match your words or just the most popular/talked abou tthing. It doesn't have the capabilities yet to know what to recommend as part of a shifting metagame or answer certain problems.

In my opinion, Viper is probably only good in Golgari, where you can play a fair amount of instants to give it hexproof or indestructible and ramp to it fairly quickly. Just a thought of course. And obviously Innkeeper's talent doubles the counters on it once it's fully grown, if you're looking at absurd mana amounts.
