Barriers killed alot of drivers as walls of tires would have saved him.

You can see after the kid was hit the driver and the marshall did not want any part of it. You just find things for you mind to do like put out a non-existent fire so you dont have to acknowledge the reality of the kid being absolutely mutilated 20 feet away from you. All while Tom is dead in a car that drifts off track in the distance. This entire situation is nightmare fuel.

Not important, but this video is literally as old as me, and was uploaded 10 days before I was born. On a serious note: R.I.P to both men who died. At least they're in a better place.

I remember this crash very well, saw it live on TV and later heard what had happened since it was not clear in the beginning what really was going on. Absolutely horrible crash, completely avoidable and two people died instantly in the most gruesome way possible. Am happy F1 has improved the safety standards, a crash like this cannot happen anymore, but we should never forget what it took to get to todays standards.

I was a racetrack medic for well over twenty years from 1974, and remember this tragedy happening although I wasn't there. Regulations were not so strict in those days, and training was sparse to say the least. It's hard to imagine now with all the red-tape and health-and-safety we have these days, but it's all there for a reason.

The track Marshall and driver were more worried about the car catching fire than the 19-year-old boy that was just obliterated and the driver who died from nearly complete decapitated. Formula One was a different thing back then.

Ok, I first came across this film in a Faces of Death type compilation online (before KZbin). In that version it had cheesy music and a sickening, dull THUD! dubbed over it (there was never any clear sound of the impact). The kid ran across the track carrying a fire extinguisher and was struck at ankle level by an F1 car going over 100 mph. His body stayed mostly intact, but because he was spun around so fast the centrifugal force tore his shirt and pants off (this happens more often than you think with pedestrian collisions). You can tell by the expressions of the driver and the other fire marshal that something terrible has just happened in front of them. The driver isn't quite sure, but the fire marshal has to know what it was. He was running along side him and missed getting hit himself by inches. His feet and face were badly mangled, so much so that he was unrecognizable. He was eventually identified simply because he was the only fire marshal who didn’t check in when the race ended. Because he was holding the fire extinguisher at waist level it struck the car’s driver right in the head killing him instantly. This was right at the beginning of a long straight away and the car eventually crashed against the guard rail. There are other angles that include a little more of the collision than this, but none that captured it fully. There were however hundreds of live witnesses. And if you're interested, there's the opposite angle view which captures the hit better than this one. More gruesome. kzbin.info/www/bejne/p2qcnGWoa6yYiZYsi=_3OVs-NcVgHirQME

The marshalls body was so badly destroyed, they had to do a roll call of all the other marshalls so they could determine who had been killed.
