The very fact that hundreds of thousands of them were prepared to die and let their 1000 year old city be destroyed before they would sell out someone they saw as a friend, who isn't even the same species as them, is what made this twist really deep. I really liked Luffy's expression here too, you can see how deep he respects them and how happy it makes him, because they display his favorite qualities in people right then and there.

1:51 They just gave us his laughing issue - the Celestial Dragon who bought him (he was enslaved because he tried to defy the Celestial Dragon who bought Stella and tried to stop him from taking her - I guess he lashed out at him) forbade him from ever smiling, saying "Who gave you permission to smile?" We can guess what happened to him whenever he did smile without permission. And yes - Stella died while she was enslaved to the Celestial Dragons, Tesoro got his freedom when Fisher Tiger freed all the slaves but Stella didn't. What might have happened if the Celestials had kept her alive for just a few more years.......how different things might have turned out.....
