Im looking to learn more. My son (11) was found to have osteomyelitis in his ankle. The infectious disease doctors did a culture and identified the bacteria as fusobacteium. They told us that it entered his bloodstream from his mouth and traveled to his calcaneus where it started an infection. He has always been healthy with a well functioning immune system. Just before the osteomyelitis I had him at the dentist for tooth cleaning. While the dentist was looking in his mouth he popped one side of my son’s loose tooth out so he went ahead and just pulled the loose tooth by hand. It’s crazy that from a simple visit to the dentist he ended up visiting orthopedic urgent care and getting X-rays (Monday) then a general practitioners office (Tuesday) then the ER (Tuesday) where they did an MRI and blood test and culture, then sent home, then another visit to general practitioner (Friday) and a call to the orthopedic urgent care again, then the ER again (Sunday) where the again did an X-ray, an MRI, blood test, blood culture, and an ultrasound just to get a diagnosis. He was admitted to the hospital that night and started on two antibiotics. Monday morning he went in for surgery where they left his wound open and placed a wound vac on it, Wednesday he went in for surgery again. This time they closed him up even though they didn’t think they would beforehand. He ended up staying in the hospital for 9 days. He has a boot on his foot that is only to be removed by the surgeon and cannot walk on it. (He couldn’t walk on his foot the whole week of trying to find out what was wrong.) no bathing aloud. He was poked in his arms 10 times through time at ER and hospital then got a picc line put in. He was given 5 different antibiotics as they narrowed what type of bacteria and will continue another 5 weeks of IV antibiotics. Once healed he will need physical therapy to help regain mobility of his ankle. I want to understand more about how this can happen.
