Wondering if you've covered or will cover the setting you use on the GoPro? I noticed how red the video is when pull it up to surface so I'm curious white balance you're using and such.
@BobsUnderwaterCrabHouse-so2woАй бұрын
Good eye! That's just laziness on my part in post. Since I've been wanting to watch them in real time, I just do a standard color correction in the nle in the beginning and don't bother changing it for the shallows. So it's just set to bring back the reds and yellows at depth. I use a dome on the gopro. You could add a cc30R behind that for color, but nowadays easier to do it in post without having to worry about another layer of glass or plastic in front of the lens and sensor.

@@BobsUnderwaterCrabHouse-so2wo ahh good to know, that easy enough to do. Thinking I might try this with my trap and older GoPro later this year. Always curious to see what they're up to and how the trap is working. I've got a round trap and the doors are just the two vertical bars so hopefully less issues getting their claws stuck when entering. Loving the videos!

Yeah, it's always interesting. I dropped an expendable old gopro in a shrimp pot this season amd saw some cool stuff. Since then, my outboard crapped out so I haven't been able do do any drops at all. Hope to get back out for the winter season to finally do all the tests I had planned. Good luck and have fun!

Have you ever thought about trying this with a ring pot? I use those when I'm crabbing off a pier so that could be interesting. Also given the choice between Dungeness and Red Rock, I actually prefer Red Rock lol (I'm in Kitsap County). But since you mentioned the east coast, I absolutely LOVE Maryland Blue crab.
@BobsUnderwaterCrabHouse-so2wo2 ай бұрын
Ring as in a circular pot or ring that closes when you lift? I've been planning on trying all kinds of tests with the cameras, but I've had boat engine problems since before the season started. Very frustrating! Grew up on blue claws, love em, and they're great for weight loss since you burn calories trying to dig out the meat, lol. So I'm a huge fan of our meatier west coast crabs!

Reply -- Doors must comply to regulations. No smaller mesh than REG. BUT maybe heavier wire TINES that move independent of each other No cross bars. Claws Would not get caught in doors. Like the turn style at Sub Way. One way in. Only way out 4 inch circle escapes for smaller crabs. I was going to modify and take to Game Warden Office and make sure it is KOSHER with REGULATIONS. I know crabs are not KOSCHER.
@boedayious49933 ай бұрын
Doors !!! I noticed this on other videos also. Put 1/4 or 1/2 by 1 inch mesh on doors only. Preventing claws from getting stuck between bars in entry doors. Align mesh so claws glide up door and open it. Leave small amount of extra wire at bottom of door to flop down flush with bottom of cage to prevent crabs escape. GREAT VIDEO !!!!! ❤❤ Also if the was a color crabs are attracted to - or contrasting color so crabs would notice door faster. I painted mine white but have no data on color.
@BobsUnderwaterCrabHouse-so2wo3 ай бұрын
Yep, doors are a place to start! I snipped off the horizontals on two doirs as my first test when the season opened this past weekend... and my outboard quit right after I dropped. Been working on that but will check video to see if the one male that climbed in during the short drop had any door issues. I'll be testing door decoration, too, with colors. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! I'll talk about adding mesh in the next video. Spoiler alert, the Fish & Wildlife folks say it's against gear regs to use a smaller mesh even just on the doors.

In my third year of crabbing the Oregon coast, so after learning much of the basics, this is interesting to start understanding the finer points, like behaviors. Scraping the barnacle was interesting. I didn’t think a crab would be smart enough to try that.
@BobsUnderwaterCrabHouse-so2wo5 ай бұрын
Yes! I crabbed for decades before the technology made it possible to get a peek at what goes on down there while the pots are soaking. Before it was just guessing. I'm really looking forward to the start of this season when I can run a bunch of bait, gear and other tests to learn more and see more behaviors. Thanks for taking the time to comment, and happy crabbing!

From your previous videos, maybe a finer mesh on the uppers of those doors. Stop their claws getting stuck but not fine enough to be 'blown' open by the current? Only if you were brainstorming ideas... Good vid.

@@BobsUnderwaterCrabHouse-so2wo Can't have any mesh on it smaller though? Not even a 2x4 bit covering the top half of a door? Everything else would be big enough. Hm... On our scale, sure. Although I've met some humans who'd probably score on the low end of the crustacean spectrum. Very well adapted to what they do. But I'm also hoping to test whether they're smarter than we think if I can get permission to tag some. I'm wondering if the females learn to go to traps for an easy meal since they're always released.

More vertical bars would likely make the mesh too small for regs, though.
