The reality is that the inability to read music has also played its part. 100 years ago most educated people could sit at the piano and read up to some level. Today reading music is a niche skill and this illiteracy has contributed to the public’s understanding. Imagine if the vast majority of people couldn’t read letters and you asked about literature. Not one of these people could therefore actually speak about the music itself. Lack of music literacy regardless of taste has contributed to this situation.
