Ahhh this is why American males are gay.
@WaaDoku5 ай бұрын
Call it "such a male thing to say" but I disagree with this to some extent. It should be a healthy mix of both emotional support and solution-oriented advice. Because too much of either one approach could leave people end up getting stuck emotionally. Especially if your partner is either 1) bad at accepting help from others, or 2) bad at expressing emotional distress. A healthy mixture keeps emotional well-being high and it gets people moving forward in life. Obviously, the way both emotional support and solution-oriented advice are worded is important

It's just a real solid, simple advice to lead with one and then offer the other. It will never harm and almost always help. Like, nearly 100% of time if you lead with a fix, it will sound irritating (for a number of reasons), no matter how smart you or your conversation partner are. Not to mention that such advice is often either retroactive (what they should have done in the past), or not that useful (since it's the first thing that popped into your head). It's just a rule of thumb, to not lead with advice unless it's directly solicited.
@WaaDoku3 ай бұрын
@@ayebraine Pretty much the same thing you wrote in your other reply to me. Again, I disagree. Which reaction to an emotionally taxing situation you should give "first" really depends on the people and the kind of relationship you have with them. There's no rule of thumb. The issue I tried to point out with my comment here is that too much of either is going to hurt people more in the long run. Much needed advice might be irritating to some people and they don't want to hear it at all even though it's exactly what they need to do and work on or emotional support might feel uncomfortable for people because they have never gotten a hug from someone but subconsciously they desperately need it. It's not that clear cut which should come first. I was only suggesting that a mixture seems most appropriate instead of the (exaggeratedly depicted) one-sided and unauthentic emotional support given in this video (which is obviously done for comedic reasons but lots of people seem to take this very seriously).

Pretty sexist, but otherwise mostly good advice. It's important to note people can need one or the other, and it's best to not just assume. Usually it's best to ask if they're venting or need solutions.

I give advice and help problem solve as often as possible. That way, i dont have to listen to the incessant whining from the women in my life seeking pity as they wallow in the problems of their own making.

So why don't women try to use the same amount of consideration to tell them what they want instead of trying to make us magically find out from thin air.

I had the same moment with my ex- gf once. She thought she failed in her college exam and feared getting thrown out because it was a requirement for her admission. She called me crying and I tried to explain to her that she shouldn't be sad but try to think of every single option to get enough points after all. I offered her to sit down with her, do the whole exam together and find out if there are some points missing as soon as the correction is published. Instead of being thankful, she was angry that I wasn't giving her support. 2 weeks later, we did what I offered and we found enough points for her to argue and with the help of putting on a sexy dress (my advice) and the exam being corrected by computer science students, she finally got all the points she needed to pass the exam. I never heard a thank you. That's when I knew I would eventually break up with her.

@ayebraine3 ай бұрын
You can give solutions afterwards. Almost 100% of the time regardless of gender a grown-ass person complains and vents because they're pissed and want your support, not because they're incapable of dealing with shit. And they'll ask for advice or help. Or accept unsolicited advece after you've done what they actually approached you for.

Mindblowing! I am an Avoidant, super-rational man. I used to be called a "robot" or "ice heart" for having these rational behaviours displayed by Phil; then my ex-girlfriend sent me this video and I learnt what she and everybody else meant. I am 28 now, and I feel like I am learning how to walk, something I should have learned a long time ago..."better late than never".
