First true Roller Derby is with a banked track. One of the greatest make skaters is Little Richard Brown who was from LA but slatted with the Philadelphia Warriors. If you eant a great story I can tell you how my Mom esrned an A in college via Roller Derby

This was interesting and helpful! Currently designing a character with some elements of roller derby and drag racing with modified roller skates. I thought a putting a crocodile motif on the design would be fun because they're an animal that is fast an ferocious but famously can't turn well (more in the drag race direction there). So imagine my surprise when I watch this and there's an actual alligator pit as part of a definitive moment in roller derby. Universe is telling me to keep going on that one. Anyway, nice video.

Is there a reason you didn't talk about Rollerjam? I enjoyed the first season of the show and thought it could have been a worthy successor to the original Roller Derby However, once they added the "Roller Games"-type theatrics in later seasons it just turned me off.

Such crap as "Roller Games" was the death knell for Derby. I hope you realize that Roller Games and Roller Derby were two completely different styles of skating. Derby took it more seriously than Games, which was no more than an abomination--with "drama" that was never ending. Games became an absolute joke and that's the reason roller derby lost many fans. At that time, it was considered "professional" wrestling on skates. And that was a shame because they had some tremendous skaters in Games.

I was introduced to Roller derby in the late 60s, 70s. It was great! Loved the mayhem, and potential pandemonium. It was coed. Way ahead of it's time. The garbage flat track crap isn't Roller Derby. Simple game play old school rules, or don't play at all. Don't go the top trying to make it entertaining. Play old school, and let the chips fall when may.

Modern Roller Derby is a joke. You never see banked tracks but I do understand the cost of a banked track. Flat track Roller Derby does not interest me at all. Sorry 😞

The alligator wasn't present during the actual skating. Aside from the danger, the insurance costs would have been astronomical, far too high for this show's budget.

Walkathons evolved from dance marathons, which emerged during the Great Depression. People desperate for work would participate by dancing until they dropped. Literally. A few actually died. Leo Seltzer first sponsored dance marathons, but then changed them to walkathons because they were less brutal than dance marathons. To correct the video: these were not *races* and there was no "speed walking." The point was simply to endure longer than anyone else, and win a cash prize. (For anyone interested, the 1969 film "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" dramatized Depression-era dance marathons. The film was nominated for many Academy Awards, and for many other awards, too. Gig Young won an Oscar for his performance, and other actors won awards, too.) Leo Seltzer's innovation of roller derby was initially not a full-contact sport. It was sportwriter Damon Runyon who suggested to Seltzer that the sport seemed more popular when there was more wrestling and jostling among the players. Seltzer was reluctant; but he tried it, and Runyon was correct. The sport eventually became more of a wrestling or rugby match than a race, and Seltzer handed over the reins to his son.

"its from science, from legally blonde" lol <3 truly love your commentary! I'm realizing now how lucky I am for having you as one of our amazing coaches. Love your YT channels and so glad I get the chance to implement this in my very new journey in adult sports and exercise. From couch potato (this time last year) to kicking my own ass, powerlifting, training and now Roller Derby. I'm very very thankful for you and Coach D and all our wonderful coaches and Veteran skaters to help me on this journey.

Roller game actually started off better and jump the shark real quick as far as scripting and excessive Violet roller derby was a little bit better but the alligator was the last straw animal rights people had a real problem with that in the 80s

When I was a newb, I used to bang my wheels together until the bearings flew out. It was...damaging. lol But there are different types, there's a small handheld one that helps punch them out safely.

That was crazy. Those old ladies out there brawling. Lol. But those women look so different. It's not just the hair and clothes.. It's their facial features. They almost look manish. Weird. I've always thought that though. Look at women from the 20's and 30's. You can't even takewomen of today, do their hair and makeup and dress them in that style. TTakea picture with a camera and film from those times and it still won't look like those women from way back. It's like genes progress and stuff. Crazy.

There isn't much of a way to work up to this other than...try it out? I started out just lifting the front wheels of one skate and then alternating that until it felt comfortable. Then I played around with what it felt to lift the back wheels of one skate and alternating sides. To make a combo, I think it was easiest to start with one skate front wheels and one skate back wheels because it feels more centrally balanced. Then I moved on to both sets of front lifted and finally both sets of back lifted. When both are doing the same, it really changes where you shift your center of balance (forward for front, backward for back). Just play and remember that usually the worst thing that happens is your skate falls back to its natural state and a tiny spike of fear. :-)

@@PowerThroughthe4thWhistle Woww must be the best written tutorial I have ever read! 😁 Thank youu so much! Definitely helps to hear that it helps to alternate because yes now I can lift to toe better on one foot; also helps to hear to practice the front toe, back heel first as it works better with balance; will definitely practice all this today! Thank youu so much & have a great week ahead! 🤗🤗
