This woman is amazing. I am an adult just started swimming. This is how a coach should be. Remove the fear everything falls in place. Although I can float and kick and do some arm movement i am still afraid of a pool which is just 3.5 feet. I imagine what will happen if I go down and drink water. This is so bad that I can't try different strokes 😢. Unfortunately I am not in US and have a coach like this. I am so surprised why this channel having more than 900 videos for more than 10 years still it is having only 5k subscribers.

How can I be safe in the deep water if I cant tread water?? The only way of breathing, of course Im gonna be scared if I cant breath 😅
@MelonDashMiracleSwimming
@MelonDashMiracleSwimming 4 ай бұрын
You're not safe because I'll bet that you don't know that the water holds you up. And if you're one of few people who do not float, then still, your safety must come from knowing that you can rest and get air whenever you want in deep water. Treading is not necessary for that. And treading cannot be learned until you know that: you will be too afraid to feel what you need to feel to make treading work.

Thank you Melon! I have watched this video 3 times! I am teaching an adult class, and one of my students is having tremendous difficulty learning this skill. (All my other students have mastered it and advanced.) I have never tried the technique in this video; I'm eager to try it out today with my non-floating student! He has the ability to float, just like everyone else; I think he simply does not *believe* that he can, which is interfering. The other problem is that we (instructors) are told to teach them how to float with legs up (as per US Masters curriculum). If I can get him to float "legs down" then maybe he will become comfortable and "feel safe" enough to gently kick his feet to raise his legs. (I found that when I try to back-float, my legs automatically rise because of habit. It takes effort for me to relax enough and allow my legs to fall. I've been swimming for the past 60 years (thru high school, and then thru US Masters), and I forget what it is like to be new to the water, and why it feels so foreign and scary to adults. This morning, I spent 30 minutes trying to replicate what my non-floating student is doing (legs sinking, chest sinking, then head sinking), just so I can know what he is feeling (teachers need empathy!). I can't correct him unless I know what he's doing "wrong." This video has offered me a new approach. Thank you! - Matt

You're welcome, TalkingChimp88. Glad to help! Who tells you that people should float with feet off the bottom? Fire them. Adult swimming lessons are in a state of emergency due to instructions like that. www.pr.com/press-release/917482
@TalkingChimp88

@@MelonDashMiracleSwimming It's not that back floating must be horizontal. It's that we'll eventually move to the deep end, where there is no bottom. So, diagonal floating is okay, but there won't be a bottom for feet to touch. The most valuable part of this video is listening to the questions by the students and your answers. I also love the excitement of the students when they "get it." I didn't understand, however, why you put your foot on the student's foot to keep it on the floor. (around 12:00)

@@TalkingChimp88 Dear Caring Instructor. This is flawed thinking that he should float without his feet on the bottom because he won't have that bottom in the deep end. Please do my instructor training. When it's ready. As much as you want to help, you (and thousands of others) are preventing this student from learning to float. Too much to explain here.

Do you have chapter/instructors in other states? I live in Rhode Island. I'm a swimmer, recently returned to swimming after 20 years. In the course of talking to people in my life recently and found out two of them are terrified of water- both had near-drowning experiences- and they are too afraid to try again, which I completely understand. I'd love to see a program like this in the Northeast, particularly in underserved communities. Like the rest of the US, we've seen several very tragic drownings of both children and adults this summer. Thank you! You're doing an amazing service.

I have used this method of teaching the back float for over 50 years. When I learned it, I knew it was a game changer, especially little ones who want to put their feet on the wall and push off which causes you to go under. This method also automatically teaches people how to stand back up by allowing your feet to touch. Love it!

How can someone muster up the comfort, courage and confidence from reading a book or watching an online video and apply it actual swimming???
@MelonDashMiracleSwimming
@MelonDashMiracleSwimming Жыл бұрын
The book musters it up! The reader, given what the culture tells him/her, would not be able to muster it up on his/her own if they're really afraid. Anyone can learn to swim, but not in typical swimming lessons or with books that say that learning to swim and be safe in deep water requires learning strokes. That's misinformation.
