I admire Master Renzo so much. He's so humble, so funny, such a likeable guy...and obviously his jiu-jitsu is ridiculous. I always learn from watching him, and there's always a smile on my face. 😊

Renzo all he has to do is swim the left arm under your right arm right hand inside your right collar. From there it can do a lot.

Honestly I think we need to start teaching Judo, Bjj and wrestling as one. Same way with karate, boxing and muay etc. When you combine it all you learn the useful stuff and leave out the least effective stuff.
@vwgolf19912 ай бұрын
From a pure self defense perspective, Judo (and wrestling) are superior when things go well, which if you're reasonably experienced, they generally will. BJJ is idea for when things go very poorly, and is to a large extent, is based on succeeding despite a worse case scenario, so much so that BJJ practitioners often use the worse case scenario as a starting point, which get's made fun of a lot, but isn't completely unsound. One builds a cake assuming everything was done correctly, the other builds a cake assuming you fucked up the recipe and the oven is too hot, then works backwards to fix things and end up with a decent cake anyway. Two equally valid ways of dealing with the same basic problem.

doing judo and bjj helps you grow into "any other sports" more than any other sport? really? even cycling and tennis? i dunno. generally in judo there's usually more emphasis on just spendinqg time in class doing basic physical education type stuff. Like you would find in HS (american) football or wrestling program, comes from the youth based orientation vs the adult class orientation of BJJ. Combine that with more emphasis on just pushing pace and plyo / explosive movements over the control and technical flow of BJJ( this is a big generalization and of course it all has its place in both sports ), as a general sports thing, judo is probably a better gateway into just general athletics than BJJ. Which really depends on the school or club. But no more so than high school wrestling or football. And, a competition oriented BJJ club is going to be a lot more grueling and physical and athletically demanding than a softball Judo club geared towards kids and hobbyists.

"I am the shark, the ground is my ocean" ... don't play their game and stay on shore then lol ... learning bjj is about as useless as learning portuguese or learning how to surf, it's good to know if you find yourself in these exceptional situations but why would you go to a hellhole like Brasil, why would you surf in shark-infested waters, why would you willingly put yourself in danger in a self defence scenario by going to the ground willingly, at least judo will teach you how to get back up and LEAVE the Danger Zone instead of prolonging your risk of getting headstomped ... maybe bjj is useful to learn if only for 1 thing and thing only: to develop an understanding on how NOT to do self-defence :)

I want to do Judo but I'm quite afraid of falling and getting injured. I'm 35 and pretty out of shape, overweight too. Maybe BJJ would be better to begin with?

It's so weird how they lie about the belt system. The only historical evidence shows that Helio and Carlos wore black belts since the beginning.
@nicoh19537 ай бұрын
I think it reaaaally depends on your gym, I did Judo for 2 years or so abd had friends that pursued it and none of them, although having high ranked color belts, is strong, confident in their abilities or very good at texhnique. And thats because we only did technique and a bit of skipping!
