Great vid - I did the GF 10 years ago when I was in good shape and training for Marmotte that year - signed up to do it again next year for Macmillan after surgery earlier this year.....a good target but some serious training to be done! as I'm a LONG way from the fitness I once had.

Thanks. Best of luck for your return to fitness and your training over the year ahead. Having been fit enough in the past for the Marmotte, I bet you'll get back to peak condition relatively quickly 💪

@@hampshirecyclist Thank you, I hope so - I absolutely committed to my training from about 9 months out when I did Marmotte which paid dividends for the challenges I had that year....I remember being more knackered after The Dragon though! It's a tough day out.

Hi mate, Does the Atom have an ergo mode and is the workload being controlled via TR similar to a smart trainer? Or are you manually increasing the workload at each step of the ramp test using the fan or electromagnet?
@hampshirecyclist5 ай бұрын
Hi. Yes the ATOM has an ERG mode which is then controlled by the TR App. It works well 😃

Thanks for the feedback. I hear ya - I was 122Kg when I started cycling 7 years ago. Still 'felt' too heavy at 92Kg though. Hoping I've trimmed a little since riding Col de la Madone at the start of this month - weigh-in in a couple of weeks will tell - hoping for principally body fat reduction 😄🤞

@@hampshirecyclist I can never see you riding on the "other" side of the road without thinking "I don't know how he can ride on different sides of the road in different countries and safely keep that straight"--a thought which ALWAYS, in turn, leads me to remember you going off the road and into the ditch in Yosemite when we split apart that day and you rode so many extra miles too.

Thanks Thom. My 1-hour target and 55 minute stretch target were based on the VAM I managed on the longer but less steep Puig Major climb in Majorca. I thought I'd end up somewhere between the two. I rode to 'feel' and kept an eye on average power and speed to keep pushing myself without blowing up.

Appreciate this was a couple of years ago but how do you find the Atom with TR? I’ve read about some erg mode issues like the two don’t play nicely together. I ask as I’m considering the new V2 Atom, and I worship at the altar of TR 😂
@hampshirecyclist7 ай бұрын
Really good question. Long answer below - but TLDR answer is - it's awesome! Overall I'd say it's been great albeit I can only speak to the specific setup I run. I use TR on my Apple MacBook Air (which is around 4.5 years old) and it connects well. Dropouts happen rarely and are short-lived (I guess probably once every 4 to 6 months from my experience). ERG mode works well for 95% of workouts. Where it struggles a little, is when doing very short intervals. Anything around 30s is tough because there is a little delay in the ERG power rising, which means if you're doing a high power (VO2 or above) interval that is short, you can't get the full effect for the entire interval time. Also - worth noting that sometimes when starting a workout, as the power ramps at the very beginning of the warmup, you can see on the odd occasion you get a 'spike' in power until the connection settles. So if you rely on your data a lot, you may want to scrap the workout and start again to avoid recording a 3000+w power spike that would impact your TSS etc - but I guess I've had a similar thing with power meters I've run on my bikes. Other than this, I've loved the Wattbike - it's been reliable, consistent and easy to use and it's well made and robust. The ERG mode for Threshold / Sweetspot / Tempo workouts is brilliant, as it forces you to push through all those temptations to ease off and really helps support building out your TTE. I clean it regularly and have had it serviced once in the 6 years or so I've owned it, which was surprisingly good value. Another thing (which may simply be attributable to my own physiology) is that I consistently see lower power numbers on my ATOM than outdoors. This has been consistent across multiple bikes with different power-meter settings (crank arm single / double, also single and double sided pedals and also hub). Its roughly about a 5% difference and is VERY consistent suggesting it's probably either the ATOM reads a little low or I just can't put out the same power over any given time indoors (much more likely). If it was just experienced on the PM on my own bike, then I'd write it off as the external setup over-reading, but the effect is consistent across multiple bikes. Also bear in mind I'm using V1 of the ATOM - I don't have any experience of the V2. Come to think of it, I probably ought to do a review of the ATOM ... 🤔
