Great video ! I just finished 1Q84 and am reading Norwegian Wood , excited to continue the Murakami journey

I didn't connect with WUBC as well! Glad to know i'm not insane. I loved the first half, not really the latter. Hard-boiled is by far my favourite, right next to Norwegian Wood. Your Murakami tier list is probably the most relatable one I've found so far. I have a question, what was your favourite scene in Kafka on the Shore that you mentioned?
@ProbablyGarrett7 күн бұрын
HB a great choice for a favorite def underrated , and my favorite scene (thanks for asking) is the conversation in the car about Schuberts piano sonata No 17 D 850 “‘If you play Schubert’s sonatas straight through, it's not art… It’s too long and too pastoral… Which is why every pianist who attempts it adds something of his own… That’s why I like to listen to Schubert when I’m driving. As I said, it’s because all the performances are imperfect. A dense, artistic imperfection stimulates your consciousness, keeps you alert. If I listen to an utterly perfect piece while I’m driving, I might want to close my eyes and die right then and there. But listening to the D major, I can feel the limits of what humans are capable of--that a certain type of perfection can only be realized through a limitless accumulation of the imperfect. And personally, I find that encouraging.’”

Kawana does a rewrite of Air Chrysalis which was first published as a novella and at the same time searches for his lost love. Ushikawa keeps an eye on people just like The Gate Keeper and In Tsukuru we see an element of unreality crossing into reality, as in many of his other books too. Was The Commendatore really there and did that knife really leave our reality. Did the police really change thier uniforms and adopt a new sidearm. Did Tsukuru and Kafka commit real crimes. Metaphor and reality are blurred leaving the reader to decide which is which. I wonder if Murakami rewriting this work just like Kawana did is the author realising a dream that was unattainable when he wrote 1Q84.

Sputnik Sweetheart was my first Murakami. I've read four more since then (First Person Singular, Men Without Women, Norwegian Wood, and After the Quake). Sputnik Sweetheart is not only my favourite Murakami so far, but it's one of my favourite books of all time!! Feel like not a lot of people like it but I wonder why

He’s such an interesting author because each of his books can hit you in just the right way while someone else has such a completely different experience , glad you love it , curious what you’ll think about SOTB since for me out of his shorter novels that one hit a lot harder for me in the ways that Sputnik fell short , let me know if you end up reading it

So you are reading books now? There is always a passion beside Apex. 😁 If ots not just Murakami for you, but ither japanese authors I would propose Keigo Higashino. Right now i am very much into SciFi, but begore I had my fair share of crime/thriller books and Higashino was an absolute standout. Try "The Devotion of Suspect X". This novel will blow you mind with its outcome and received various prices for its story. The one crime story i still remember even after years!
@ProbablyGarrettАй бұрын
THANK YOU - I am a huge fan of mystery books and have read every one of his books, he’s such a stand out writer and the devotion of suspect x is one of my most recommended books , he has a new book in English releasing on the 17th so expect a video about his books later this month , have you read any seishi yokomizo? Another favorite Japanese mystery author of mine

I just started getting into him. I love his writing so far but I hate all of his book covers. They’re so bland and unappealing.

I did not enjoy 1Q84, it’s my own fault because it is the first Murakami book I read and I fall into the camp of those who feel it is just too long. People told me that Murakami was the modern author to read when it came to magical realism but for a book that was over 1000 pages long very little magic is showcased (imo) for a book of that length. By the time it was over I was so happy to be finished with it and I just found it very predictable while the sex scenes were beyond cringe and every time I came across one I was struggling to make it through them. Great video though and someday I will give Murakami another shot but it’s gonna be a while. You earned my sub with this video. Cheers
@ProbablyGarrettАй бұрын
I hadn’t thought much about how little magical elements are really in most of his books coming from predominantly non fiction but I completely see your point , agree the sex scenes in any of his books are a pass for me and I’m always happy when they’re over but I love his writing enough to just carry on and block them out from my memory, his newer book has more of a magical feel with pretty much no cringe sexual stuff so might consider that , good insight and lmk if you pick up one of his books in the future

HURRAY WE agree on one thing IQ84. His best. I read it twice and it got even better. I have read all Murakami too. My 2 and a half cents .2nd BAKERY ATTACK Love that too. Men without Women was great. I THOUGHT Norweigian wood was lame , Kafka on the shore and Colorful whatshisface....were IMHO his worst.......the latter for it's lame and unbelievable plot with a 2D limp wet protaganist so surprised you liked that. In my opinion the only strong character in Norweigian Wood was the piano teacher....The reason I disliked KAFKA ON THE SHORE was the pervy thex with mother type vibe...I thought IQ84 was brilliant. Definitely My favorite book. I enjoyed Killing Commentadore and Dance Dance Dance. The Wind up Bird chronicals I found reminiscent of KOBO Abe's masterpiece WOMAN IN THE DUNES AS for non fiction UNDERGROUND was excellent, but not fun.The RUNNING BOOK was cool , however, I think his book on music was a gargantuan heap of verbal mutual mastabatory pretentious turd, but that's just me.
@ProbablyGarrettАй бұрын
Interesting list I respect the thoughts , I agree with the weak protagonist in colorless being frustrating but I saw that kinda as the point of it - if you’re not the author of your life, someone else will be - kinda book , I know what u mean with Kafka but the rest of the book made up for it me , I like the connection with women in the dunes another classic for sure , also a fellow second bakery attack fan love that , I’ve listened to a lot of what Seiji Ozawa has done so was thoroughly excited to get to that one , might have to give it a second read now that I’ve calmed down but some people say Ryo Fukui is musical masturbation as well and I love him so might just be an each to their own book

Hard Boiled Wonderland has a brand new translation by Jay Rubin coming out in December from Everyman's Library and Vintage. Don't know why, but it may be because of its connection to the new book. Plus I've heard that there were some cuts made in the original translation that added some clarity to the story, similar to what happened to The Wind Up Bird Chronicle. So, maybe they're addressing that as well.

I tend to like Murakami's short stories more than his novels. He's much better in short form and kind of tedious and plodding when long.
@ProbablyGarrettАй бұрын
Short stories in general I feel are very underrated since they allow authors such creative expression without being tied down to an idea for too long , he especially thrives in that medium , do you have any other Japanese short story collections you like? Planning on doing a vid focused on that topic , others you should check out if you haven’t are Dead end memories by Banana Yoshimoto and Terminal Boredom by Izumi Suzuki

@ProbablyGarrett I've just read Death in Midsummer by Yukio Mishima, which was great, and which I also easily liked more than any of his novels. Apart from that, the only other ones I read were from Akutagawa, which I don't like as much.

As is, apparently the English version of Wind-Up Bird was already trimmed by 2 1/2 chapters from the original Japanese. But Imagree, needed to be tightened up way more. I personally thought that, while Wind-Up may be his best novel that I read (at least all the way through) it was still very much a mixed bag.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention I had no idea , just read through the email from Rubin about it , very interesting way to go about the publishing of the work and a little disappointing, like theres an after credits scene in just the Japanese hard cover version , will have to pick that up to eventually be able to make my way through it myself

Hello brother! I am from India. I really appreciate your work, yet, I also have some sort of suggestions for you, viz; 1. Please add a subtitle(it adds context to the content and it would be convenient for people around the world. Since, your dialect is peculiar and confined to a particular region,,,,the non-proficient english speakers may not cope up with your dialect.
