I think some parts have less punch at 50hz, like the explosive arp heavy part after the intro, but some of the melodies that use a lot of 16th notes are a lot more understandable. There are upsides and downsides to the NTSC and PAL versions
@SparkyMK3 Жыл бұрын
I have to admit that while it loses some of the energy of the NTSC version, the song would be MUCH more bearable to play live at this BPM, especially in regards to the arpeggios!

Fun fact: Since PAL runs at 50 FPS while NTSC runs at 60 FPS, if you put the playback speed of the PAL version at 120% (1.2x), you will get the NTSC soundtrack but slightly lower pitched.

I am quite certain the songs for Solstice are supposed to be in PAL, It does sound a lot saner in PAL. Don't know about this one, given the gameplay and the fact that the Silver Surfer is an American creation, I think this soundtrack may have been composed for 60hz, or at least somewhere between 50 and 60 (like Time Trax). Anyhow, Tim's stuff works for both NTSC and PAL.

I'm glad Time Trax got this stuff cleared up. In older games he composed with both 50Hz and 60Hz in mind, so the intended speed was somewhere in between the two. With later games like Plok, this wasn't an issue.
@zaphod774 жыл бұрын
Turns out this is the intended speed. The game was originally european, and imported to the USA. Tim follin himself has stated it many times. As opposed to say, commando c64, which was intended to be NTSC but everyone thinks it's supposed to be PAL. (comparing with the arcade makes that very obvious)

Tim Follin: I did like composing for the NES, even though in many ways it felt like a step backwards from the C64. I think initially it annoyed me and felt very limiting, but once I’d mastered some basic ‘tricks,’ like how to have bass lines and drums on the same channel, it opened it up to more possibilities and in a way became quite a useful ‘instrument,’ though it did lend itself to certain sorts of music. That’s the thing with sound chips, the music I wrote, even the style, was always whatever worked on that particular chip, which is why it altered quite a lot between consoles. Solstice was basically the culmination of all the tricks I’d learned plus I also felt that I’d done a lot of different styles on the NES for some quite boring games, and I’d enjoyed writing Ghouls and Ghosts so much because it gave me an excuse to write some folk-rock, so when Solstice came along it gave me the excuse and opportunity.Incidentally, the intro to the tune was inspired by a YES concert I’d recently been to - Rick Wakemen started the concert playing something quiet and childish on the organ, then there was a big explosion as the whole band came in with ‘Starship Trooper’ - in fact if you listen to the first two chords of Solstice, they’re essentially the same! Also I should mention that most versions on KZbin are the 60hz versions which are too fast - it was written at 50hz (PAL) and should be heard at that speed!
@bfish89ryuhayabusa4 жыл бұрын
You say in the description that you don't know if this is how Follin intended this music to sound. It is. I've read an interview with him where he was asked about the Solstice theme, and at the end of his response, he added: "Also I should mention that most versions on KZbin are the 60hz versions which are too fast - it was written at 50hz (PAL) and should be heard at that speed!" I should note that as this is specifically talking about Solstice, I don't know if that applies to his other NES soundtracks.
@SeruraRenge113 жыл бұрын
He also said in interview that because he knew it would be played at 60hz in the US, he deliberately make the PAL version a little slower than he would normally compose music so that it wasn't too fast at 60hz. So the closest to his actual vision, what he said would be his ideal, would be some kind of in-between, but no 55hz version exists.
@bfish89ryuhayabusa3 жыл бұрын
@@SeruraRenge11 What interview is that? The recommendation that 50hz is correct in my comment is his own quote from a 2012 interview with Marcus Vinicius and Garrett Chiado. (found on a blog that appears to have disappeared from the internet since I made my comment. There is a version of it translated into Japanese, and my browser's automatic translation back to English ends up close enough.)

@@bfish89ryuhayabusa It wasn't for Solstice, he was talking about the ost for the unreleased game Time Trax for the Mega Drive and it was mentioned originally in the comments of a website where he just suddenly appeared and talked about it. >Just thought I'd appear and say thank you to everyone saying nice things about this!! FYI regarding the playback speed - yes I composed at 50hz but I was always conscious that it'd be heard at 60hz in the US so I let things be a little slower than I'd have liked on PAL. I think the ideal speed is probably somewhere half way between the two! Also someone mentioned how the 'high energy' stuff I did like this went away when I moved away from chip music - I totally agree! I always preferred doing the chip stuff and wish I'd had more chance to write for that FM chip. The problem used to be that there was no reason to write chip music once the consoles went away and there was certainly no reason to write chip-sounding music, but things are different these days - chip-sounding stuff is everywhere now, my kids listen to it and I keep telling them that I used to write stuff like that, but they don't care!! Brats. Maybe I just need to train them up and get them composing... ;)

Can you upload the 50hz version of Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends' soundtracks which was also composed by Tim and Geoff Follin?
@serafim_pashkov4 жыл бұрын
I apologize for my Google Translate, I am Russian and almost do not speak English. Tim Follin said in one of his interviews that the Solstice theme was not completely uploaded to KZbin and that he originally wrote it in PAL. I conclude that this also applies to the rest of his themes for games for NES, namely, he said about Solstice in an interview, since he especially likes this topic. It is known that Tim Follin does not really like his music for NES games (with rare exceptions like Solstice) and does not understand why this music is still remembered and loved by many people around the world. These versions of the Follin brothers soundtracks brought me to your channel. It was in this form that I heard the Silver Surfer soundtrack in my childhood. In the territory of the former USSR, a clone of the NES game console called Dendy was distributed. He worked in the PAL system, and the games were from around the world, including this one. Tim Follin also wrote about the soundtrack for the game Timetrax that the soundtrack was created in 50 Hz. I agree that sounds better. In general, I noticed that for me in PAL the music that I heard in this form in my childhood sounds good. The rest I like more in NTSC (for example, Treasure Master, Wolverine and Solstice). I believe that Tim and Jeff Follin are geniuses who do not understand this themselves. Their music is above me any other music, above all. I recently discovered the main theme for the Incredible Crash Dummies by Jeff Follin, this is pure euphoria, a drug of happiness. Once they will be studied along with Bach, but today I am grateful to the few people who know and love the Follins. Thank you.

False. Tim composed tracks with a faster speed in mind. Proof? The Sky Shark NES port plays at the right speed when in NTSC. However, he did make the originals at 50hz and finds the 60hz versions too fast. Like Time Trax the ideal speed might speed might be between the two, say 55hz ;). Even in Europe Nintendo provided NTSC systems to work with, so Tim used a 60hz pitch system
