I think my main problem with this new era is just how poorly paced the episodes are. Everything just feels so rushed and there isn't nearly enough time to breathe and just let the characters grow and develop. That's a disappointment coming from RTD because I think his biggest strength in his first era was his great characterization and character development.

agreed. they feel like they should have been 1hr each, especially with only 8 episodes a season (9 if you count xmas specials).

@ I actually don’t think the episode length is the main problem here, it’s just the way Russell is writing them. 45 minute episodes used to feel longer to me than they do now even though they’re the same length and I think that’s just because they used to be way better paced.

I think something is being overlooked. "Joy to the World" can be criticized as being just OK. That is, on quality. Whereas it has been nearly impossible to criticize other episodes of S1 for quality at all without being called names, whether you liked them or not. This is a massive improvement.

Once again The Doctor could have done nothing and the result would have still been the same. Not the first time this has happened in the latest era.

I feel the writers have become really careless in this new era. Surely the Doctor would be concerned about a Time Hotel and it's implications and would work to shut it down. Villengard came back for no apparent reason. Why was a Silurian running the hotel? Doesn't matter, don't think about it. I suspect Nicola Coughlan was used in all the promo shots because she's a bigger name than Steph De Walley and therefore would guarantee more viewers, which feels a pretty cynical move. Anita was way more interesting than Joy, whose life is so sad and lonely that it's better if she kills herself? Weird message. Ah but death is not the end. Well, maybe not for the doctor but it is for humans. Weird to suggest otherwise. I did like that they tried to highlight the loneliness some people feel at this time of year but this could have been a story about moving on, the Doctor helping Joy to move on and helping himself to move on but it's just a mess. Again. I really want to like RTD2 but it's a shame he's either forgotten or lost the ability he had to make this show work. I really hope season 2 is an improvement but I have my doubts.

I didn't like the song when I first heard it, but put it down to being a little too Disney. I let it slide because they are funding the project, so something like this was bound to happen. When I watched it the second time, however, I realised I disliked the song because it was entirely exposition about the Goblin King. It didn't feel like a genuine song the goblins would sing when offering him a tribute. I can't remember the actual lyrics, but "hey this is the Goblin King, he's really big, he eats babies" wasn't very compelling. The song could have been an interesting way to show goblin culture and give them a bit of depth, but the song was just complete fluff with no substance. I'm torn about what happened to the Goblin King, too. On the one hand, it is completely outside of the Doctor's character to kill so freely. This is someone who had trouble killing off the Daleks and he had way more reason to do that than having a small ruck with some goblins, baby eaters or not. On the other, we don't know anything about goblin culture and doing what he did might not kill the Goblin King. The King seemed to be part of the ship and they don't really live in physical reality the way we do. So giving him a grievious wound might just act like scuttling the ship, forcing the goblins to disappear to make repairs and tend to him. What I'm saying is, it didn't feel like a murder on the second watch through, but it also felt like something important had been left out to stop it being a murder. Honestly, if they'd put something into the song saying how he was an immortal part of their ship and never steered them wrong, it could have been a good way of explaining what happened without leaving a bad taste in the mouth for long-time fans. It didn't feel like he killed him, but from straight observation, he definitely did. I liked your review and think you bring up good points. I'll definitely be checking you out in the future.

I guess on the screw driver debate up until now a sonic device has always been called the things its kind of in the broad shape of. All previous Sonics called a Screwdriver have been long cylinders, like screwdrivers are. When a sonic was in the form of a lip stick it was called the Sonic Lipstick, when it looked like a trowel it was called the Sonic trowel, when it was in the form of sunglasses it was called the Sonic Shades….. despite it always having broadly the same abilities. Which is why people think it could have been renamed here. Or just called a “Sonic” without any additional bit of the name.

Star beast was a fine episode, a perfect introductory episode for the specials I think. But yikes the ending was sloppy… I appreciate the trans rep and think rose was overall handled very well aside from the ending which was just really jank. Wild blue yonder is almost one of my favourite Doctor who eps ever… it’s just so bright, the cgi is a lil wonky but if the ship was darker there would’ve been no problem. But so much of the episode is SO GOOD I just wish the ship was darker, like with midnight. The giggle is fantastic and a really good closer to the specials and Neil Patrick Harris did an amazing job as the toy maker and is all round a top tier episode too. The specials overall are really good, a little bit jank with a couple strange decisions but I really liked them and seeing David and Catherine was awesome. Honestly I’d give an 8/10 and say they’re top tier

genuinely as trans woman i think the worst part about her inclusion is the delivery on "your assuming he as a pronoun" bit like??? itd be better to drive the point that the meep isnt human so putting human gender stuffs on it wouldnt exactly be accurate, its kinda like bees, bee genders are worker drone queen, our human pronouns dont exactly work well for bees cause they dont fit into our boxes but she had a delivery of the "DID YOU JUST ASSUME PRONOUNS" thing and it rubbed me the wrong way

@@jimstone3014 not saying the bad cgi didn't work, it did it was all very uncanny and i liked it, i just wish it was hidden in shadow a b8it more to amp up the horror like they'd done with previous cgi monsters in the show, with a bit of lighting changes i think it could've been up there in fear factor with empty child or the rebel flesh

@@elitusyeetus2032 a lot of the episodes bad notes come from rtd trying a little too hard to be progressive and it for sure bites him with the episode. again, the episodes discussion on gender and identity is all very sloppy. i took the pronouns scene as attempting to be funny but it just kinda falls flat.

11:20: A better solution to the metacrisis was RIGHT THERE. Meep's ship had some sort of mind control device, right? Supposed to push something into minds, you might say? So reverse the polarity (of the neutron flow) to suck the metacrisis OUT of Donna and Rose. Make Donna and Rose have to help in order to jigger it correctly. It would make sense why it wasn't something that could be done before: the Doctor wouldn't willingly go seek out such a horrible machine. As a bonus, that energy could be funneled back into the Doctor with the same machine, which could have foreshadowed the bigeneration later. Not the bigeneration part but the first part was legit where I thought they were going with it.
