Wish if they stuck around a while longer, so I could ride one, but I'll witness the M5's coming in to service and the M4's being phased out beginning in 2029. I'll miss the M4 cars, and at least one should be restored and preserved, because the M4's are in bad shape now.

Hi oldipodee, Thanks for watching and for your comment. The Budd cars were always rough riding, and like an oven in the summer. The fans made a lot of noise but didn't; help heat relief much. I still have fond memories of them because they provided a very frequent service (as often as every 90 seconds in the rush hour with A and B trains), something that isn't happening now. Cheers, tassiebaz. 😃

Thank you for this absolutely amazing video. This brings back a lot of memories for me. I used to live in the Overbrook/Brookline area and was fortunate when I was a little boy to be able to ride the PCCs with my father from the old spinning wheels stop into Wood Street station downtown In 1993 the Overbrook trolley line where the PCC‘s used to operate was shut down. It reopened in 2003 unfortunately it is not the same without the old PCC cars. When I was a teenager in the mid 90s, I would often on Saturdays take a ride on the 47D Drake from Castle Shannon to the end of the Drake line just to continue the experience of riding those old trolley cars This is why I like to go to the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum truly an amazing place, and the fact that they are able to preserve a lot of these old trolley cars like what my parents used to ride when they were younger I was fortunate to be one of the people on one of the last trolleys to run on the Drake line in September1999

I feel so old at 48 lol, I did travel on some of those in my younger years and can remember them vividly...when people would say we need to use electric power because we don't have fossil fuels and it's cheaper to use electricity...for some reason this system was brought down, only like 30 years later do we see electric buses in our streets now but using batteries instead of being connected to live wires.
@tassiebazАй бұрын
Hi Rintintin7676, Thanks for watching and for your comment. Some people would think getting rid of trolleybuses in favor of diesel at the time, and ultimately battery buses is progress. In some cases, it has worked, but in others it has failed miserably. On the positive side, many cities have chosen to keep and upgrade their trolleybus systems or install a new system altogether. This proven technology seems to work well. Cheers, tassiebaz. 😃

I visited Pittsburg several times and got to ride the PCC cars near the end of their service while they still ran on the streets Downtown the first time I visited. It was interesting later to see them with pantographs and running in the subway. I did get to ride the route over the hill instead of through the tunnel and thought that was very scenic especially inbound to the city as you saw the skyline of downtown Pittsburgh as you came downhill. I am glad that they did save the south side routes of today but would hope they reopen the hillside route on a regular basis again instead of only using it when maintenance is being done in the tunnel. One thing I did notice particularly on the video with the still shots of the PCC’s you could see why one of the reasons the trolley routes were abandoned. Both the track and the cars themselves looked in bad shape. There was much rust at the bottom of the PCC cars and the track looked poor in many parts of the street running. With poor funding from both the state and counties PAT Transit just could not afford to keep such a large system running. The same could be said about the Philadelphia surface trolley system.
@tassiebazАй бұрын
Hi John, Thanks for watching and for your insightful comment. Pittsburgh trolley lines were like nowhere else. I missed the West End, but most of the rest of the system was still running when I first got there. I made many trips after that to enjoy and finally commiserate when lines were closed. Much of the streetcar abandonment was due to specific decisions by management who had interest in operating buses and didn't put much into maintenance. At least some sense prevailed, and the two South side lines were saved as well as the diversion. It's a shame it wasn't more. Cheers, tassiebaz. 😄

It’s funny to think that the route went out as far as Simon’s Valley. There must have been an enormous amount of investment in the infrastructure to install that extensive a system. It’s a shame it was all dismantled in the name of “progress” and cheap petroleum, because if it had been kept and maintained the city would now be considered very forward thinking to have all electric buses and a few of the old buses would be a retro novelty for visiting tourists.
