Wikipedia: In the historiography of the second half of the 20th century, much interest was shown in Richard's sexuality, in particular whether there was evidence of homosexuality. The topic had not been raised by Victorian or Edwardian historians, a fact denounced as a "conspiracy of silence" by John Harvey (1948).[148] The argument primarily drew on accounts of Richard's behaviour, as well as of his confessions and penitences, and of his childless marriage.[149] Richard did have at least one illegitimate child, Philip of Cognac, and there are reports on his sexual relations with local women during his campaigns.[150] Historians remain divided on the question of Richard's sexuality.

I happen to be straight, however a friend of mine long ago once derided gay people during our evening together. I replied that were it not for gay males you wouldn't be wearing designer clothing to attract a female. He hadn't ever thought of that before and hopefully started thinking less narrow mindedly from then on. 🤔

Are people sure that Eleanor Roosevelt was "gay?" Since she had several children with her husband, Frankin D. Roosevelt, and if she had sexual relationships with women as well, then the conclusion would be that she was bisexual.
@danawinsor1380 Жыл бұрын
To say that King Richard l (the "Lionheart") was "gay" is too much of a stretch because it can't be determined without doubt. It's possible he had sex with men, but that can't be proven. Also, he did not have children, but that isn't proof that he was "gay." People need to be careful when discussing personal details of historical figures because if not enough research has been done you might be making assertions that aren't true.

I love Oscar Wilde and his chaotic life! I didn’t know that most of these people were gay, but that’s awesome! Another person to include is Donatello, the other Ninja Turtle/artist who made a glorious David statue (this one is made of bronze and David has a hat)

Not gay but knew most of those. One I would dispute very much would be Van Gogh, read a lot about his life never found any suggestion that he was gay. So would like to know the source. Is it based on his fiery ill fated collaboration with Gauguin when he followed him in the street with a razor? He favoured relationships with prostitutes-female. If you google was Van Gogh gay you get silly idiots saying probably, based on relationship with Gauguin. Equally Gauguin favoured women and in later life very young women. So in VG's case pretty lazy research. Clue is in his artwork no homo eroticism there that I'm aware of.

Augustus wasn't homosexual! Don't get me wrong I wouldn't mind... but he just wasn't / Speaking of cultural homoeroticism you showed us many not so important figures and ommited those who really mattered like Alexander the Great or Socrates. I can really imagine our world without Montgomery Clift, Elton John or J.M.Barrie it wouldn't be much different... But really without Alexander, Socrates, Hadrian our civilization would be much different and probably much worse. Their sexuality wasn't so important. Their genius was.

Although he isn’t that famous, I think John Adams’ other son Charles Adams should go on the list. Although he had a wife and two girls, he had a relationship with a male neighbor of his. Charles often drank to much and died of cirrhosis of the liver caused by to much alcohol on November 30 1800 at the young age or 30.
