Watching a man like this means one has a very special interest in a very niche pursuit and study. It also might mean one can separate the very few very real individuals from the army of charlatans and lower level talents out there. He is one of a kind with a very rare combination of high level talents. Definitely would like to meet this man. When i saw him on martial art mags in 1990s and in grosse pointe blank i never really knew what i was looking at as i was lost and messed up inside. Only realising him now. Hell of a guy

i think it's moreso an allegory for artistic burnout in general. and i think if (whatever sickness is) is normal on earth in the jthm / squee! / i feel sick world then that's probably why so few people have any critical thinking skills. from a young age we're encouraged to read, write, color, draw, use our imagination. but then we're not allowed to do so when we turn into teenagers, adults, and the elderly, are we? well, in that specific shared universe, the spirits that make people lose their creativity (or redirect their creativity into killing people and smearing their blood all over their walls) also take away their brainpower, that's something that sickness explicitly states. maybe sickness is more like a metaphor for burnout and the spiraling that comes along with it? i don't know. and "sickness" can also affect real people too but we see there's still hope for someone afflicted if they can recognize the signs, remove their distractions, and stimulate their brain in time. so if devi can overcome sickness then anyone really affected by something similar can overcome it. (you know, just, lose the job) (or get a less creatively stifling job. it didn't seem like devi had any problem with her creative output when she worked at the book store)
