Good video Martin ,little question the 120 mm it’s about £200a budget telescope 🔭 but when you start adding things it Becomes a expensive scoop it must be up to £600-700 if not more so now it’s becoming an expensive telescope not budget . Just a thought I started astronomy in 1968 so I’ve got a little bit of experience of these things but still learning 😂love the video thanks 🔭

@@giovanniluigi791 usually most astro gear are designed to be used outdoors, so usually electronics are very well insulated. It's computers and office devices you have to watch out for, as they are made really for indoor use. Dew can form and moisture can enter quite easily. Especially if you intended to store the computer in a shed for long periods of time. For my best policy I use a laptop where I store in a waterproof sun shade. And when not in use I move my laptop and all my imaging cameras and telescopes back inside my house to warm up and ease off dew. The mount is left in my Astro shed and covered in a large tarp. I've been doing this for many years and I've never had any dramas. I've heard many horrors and hazards where people left imaging gear permanently outside for months and years. I would say don't be lazy and move the gear back inside when not in use, in that way you can be sure dew and mould will not destroy your gear.

The cost is just not worth it, when a £1000 scope can still get me 2700FL and 7" aperture. Your customisation of the Skymax 180 has been inspiration into this becoming a genuine contender to save me £2,000 (or even £3,000) on a C11 XLT/EdgeHD. I tried to follow the instructions to fix a slight misalignment on my Skymax 127, and I ended up making it far worse. I have since realised the instructions are completely wrong. It says at about 37 mins to slacken all the bigger screws and then adjust the smaller ones, but surely this is the wrong way round? The bigger screws actually move the mirror, while the smaller ones just lock it into position. So loosing all the larger screws actually moves the mirror an indefinite amount and may destroy whatever collimation you have. What you should do is loosen all the smaller screws first which then gives room for the mirror to move and then slowly adjust the larger screws (tightening one and slacking the other two) until the collimation is right. Simple rule of thumb is tighten the screw nearest the direction where the central disk is closest to the edge of the out of focus image and slacken the others slightly. The image will move away from the centre of the field of view, but when you move the telescope to recentralise it, the collimation should be better. Then repeat as necessary. Then when you're finished you tighten the smaller ones again to lock the mirror into the new position. It shouldnt affect the collimation but check to make sure.
@MPAstro
@MPAstro 21 күн бұрын
So sorry if the info was wrong, I have checked mine again and tested it out and small allen bolts push the mirror and the big bolts seem to just pull. I think Skywatcher might have changed the design and manufactured the bolts and changed the mirror cell, this is not unknown for them to change their designs, I know that the Skywatcher 180 mak, the Big bolts move mirror inwards and outwards and the small screws lock the mirror in place. My 127 Mak is the old black dovetail, The newer models are now green dovetails. I am not sure if Skywatcher have changed the design, Luckily you got it sorted out!!
@davidwilden1259
@davidwilden1259 21 күн бұрын
@@MPAstro Thanks for replying. Mine is one of the newer models with the green dovetail bar. It does seem like they may have changed the design, as what I found is that loosening the small screws did not change the collimation, only turning the larger ones. This makes it easier I think, as you only have three screws to worry about while doing the adjustment. BTW the way I viewed the star image while collimating was to use my DSLR at prime focus rather then visual observing with an eyepiece. The beauty of this is that you can facilities built into Sharpcap to zoom in on the image at will and you can measure the alignment error with a ruler against the screen. Also Sharpcap has a cursor showing the excact centre of the FOV. I noticed something a little puzzling and wonder if you have an explanation? After I finished collimation and got nice concentric rings with the artifical star in the exact centre of the FOV, I expected the rings to become progressively non-concentric as I moved the star towards the edges of the FOV. This was the case when Idefocussed one side of true focus, but when I defocussed the other side of true focus, the rings stayed concentric right to the edges of the FOV.

Hi Martin. Just looking into this as I've just bagged a Heritage 114P for only £10. In another comment someone said that this is now an F3.6, but the focal ratio hasn't actually changed. The shorter tube only moves the focal plane out further towards the camera sensor but the F-ratio is pre-determined by the mirror itself at F4.4. In other words, the mirror is closer due to the shorter tube but the focal plane moved out the other end, keeping it all the same.

@@MPAstro No - no changes to the mount except for some very ugly extra weights supplied by my local iron monger. Cape Town is extremely windy, and I think this extra weight allows me to image when the wind blows.

Hi Martin, sound's you are talking about the channel starts with C? Also adding the flocking media, I would use the "Worlds Blackest Matte Paint 3.0" won't add any thickness. I have some to apply to anything that is inside the scope.

Yes and to be honest, I never gonna trust that channel ever again, when he totally ignores several messages from me for just advice, no trolling BS, SOMETHING SINSTER tells me that he's a hired scumbag for his sponsors!! Again it used to be damn good channel now bought up and he just BS just for subs, views and sponsors, a total disgrace for the Astro community!! Yep I never disregard using matt black paint, it's damn good paint and will do just as good as flocking, I'm just following the guidelines on from manufacturers, but good ideas are always counted for on my channel, Thanks for your input @whatmattersmost6725

@@MPAstro I was afraid I was thinking it was him, sad to see. I do like watching his channel but I will take what I want from it. Yeah I'm thinking he thinks your a threat to his channel and either saw your messages and will not reply or did not see them? Really won't know and at this point it's disappointing to happen! This is a small community and I feel you and others help others out from your videos! I got that Mak 180 after see you videos a few years ago, and that Canon DSLR cooler (still not built it yet) but your purpose is to help! Thanks MARTIN!! My Astro friend.. From Chicago.

@@whatmattersmost6725 I've no idea why he is like this and I haven't done anything wrong, so I've no idea what's going on. I honestly like his channel, he does cover a lot of detail on Astro products, but now it just seems he's becoming like AB channel. All for the latest products, I think he has been sold off from his sponsors.

I bought an identical secondary mount and clip cover from Ali express for like £50, even came with a collimating eye piece lol. The Backyard Universe stuff is more expensive than getting CNC stuff custom made i.e. a one off...bonkers pricing.

Nice one Martin , My only gripe with the stella Lyra was the cheesy spider, so its FLO or Teleskop express when Ive got the lolly. whole different world of hurt is a newtonian, lol

Too true i know that Backyard Astro have made the uprated spiders for all GSO models as well, I think this mod will fit the Stella Lyra, But I would suggest to contact FLO or Backyard Astro, they should help you!!

@@MPAstro Yeah, Ive been looking, right now next item is a dedicated Ha filter so I can start using the Neptune Mono playerone with the 102+reducer and get some serious narrowbanding in. I've put the newtonian down until I can work up the cash for the spider. But by eliminating variables it is getting sweet. put the autofocuser on the other day as the eyes are knacked. works wonders..
