I used to deal PDP drums the drum itself is okay it's all the hardware that is junk thin cheap Hardware that doesn't last was a shit I've had more kits returned because of the hardware falling to pieces more than anything like within 2 weeks broken pedals broken stands
@Qwertyfabian7 ай бұрын
Over time I have come to the conclusion that the PDP is very close to the DW in sound, where the DW kit is superior in hardware, but that can even be modified, in my case I transformed my PDP M5 by changing the hoops to 2.5mm dw and almost all the hardware is Dw

I'll always be on the mindset that gear doesn't make the artist. It applies to every art form; people are only snobs about gear when they feel their skills depend on it. If you're good at what you do and put time/effort into it then sky is the limit, no matter what gear u have.

Very similar, the main difference is that DW will tune up easier and stay tuned for longer. Or, just scrap both and go buy a player grade vintage Slingerland for $600, or a Rogers Big R for about the same.

Dw would be more controlled do to the reinforcement rims and the wood is better quality so is the hardware but if you know how to tune then you can get away with less expensive kits just fine. Concept maple kits from Pdp were made great in my opinion. If you have the money then get the better kit if not get the less expensive. I know ppl who have owned collectors kits over 15 years and rims still good hardware still good and it’s played 3 days a week for the last almost 20 years. It’s preference really on the brands out there
@ruelsmith2 жыл бұрын
First, the hardware is better everywhere. The rims are thicker, and you can guarantee they'll be true, the lugs, the lug bolts...on a DW. Second, the bearing edge will be better shaped. You'll get more options on a DW. You'll get better heads out of the box. DW is made in the US. That said, it's been said elsewhere, and I've been saying it over and over, shell wood makes about 0.1% of your tone. It's all in your heads, tuning, and your hands. I guarantee you that if Stewart Copeland played on some PDP or even Pearl Export drums, he'd still sound like Stewart Copeland. Shell material and grain orientation have little effect on your sound, and its a bunch of snake oil sold to you. Every few years, there's a paradigm shift in how they approach drums, and its all to get you to want to buy NEW drums. They would go out of business if you would hold onto your drums for 30 years. Today's DWs with expensive exotic woods, precision 45 bearing edges, floating mounts, etc. don't sound any better than 1970 Ludwigs with mahogany and poplar shells. Fact.

do it with the 12 tom and you will hear it..., the 8 is to small..., still being diferent shells, one without reinforcement hoops and sounds so clouse..., not strange... is the size...
@Killenmachine053 жыл бұрын
Also, these are 8" toms, compare a snare drum, a floor tom maybe a kick, thats where you're gonna hear and see the real difference in my opinion, an 8 inch drum can only do so much.

Food for thought, this may be close, but the dw causes the pdp to resonate, but not vice versa, something to think about.

The PDP seems to have slightly less low end than the DW, although it could just be the tuning difference messing with my ears. Otherwise, they're really close.

@markhuizinga23473 жыл бұрын
Yes very close in sound for sure!. I recently brought a New Pearl Decade maple kit (made in china build) for pure curiosity to see how well they were made , turns out they were made very solid for such a budget style of kit, good paint job and solid hardware. Then tore it all down and finished off all the drum shells inside with 5 coats of Tung oil then 400 git sanded to smooth it all out then 2 coats of Danish oil to complete the inside shell and seal the wood to Pro standard . Kit now sounds much more mellow and deeper in tone. All DW shells have many hand applied coats of oil on the inside of their shells to seal and make the drum sound more sweeter in tone. PDP are a raw shell on the inside like a lot of other lower cost kits on the market.

Virtually no difference really in sound. Just better hardware. I just bought a PDP exotic set and it is beautiful. Was wanting a DW collectors series for a long time but then I heard about the Mapex Saturn series with their maple walnut shells which sounds way better then DW collectors to me and at about half the price for a high end kit.

The sound tone, resonance and quality is about a perfect match to my ears. The pdp is tuned just a mouse fart, maybe a squirrel fart higher than the DW but other than that, one sounds just as great as the other.

I have got into more arguments about this subject than one would beleive.Pdp are great drums at a more than fair price.I don't care if your someone just starting out or been playing for 25 years.There is nothing wrong with them. All maple shell,true pitch tunning rods,suspension mount that looks great,and the lacquer finishes are incredible. The only weakness they have is the stock heads.I took a 7 piece kit and replaced the heads with a set of DW clear coated on toms,floor toms,a ambassador on the snare and replaced the bass drum heads with the DW as well. Set them side by side to my collectors kit and invited a few drummer friends over to check out my new kit. When they set down and played them,they all ate crow. I've owned 8 sets of collector's in my life time.Some of the best kits on the market today.The problem is it's pretty hard to justify that big price tag when you can buy something like the concept pdp for a fraction of the price.Same thing goes for gretsch and tama.Ive owned there top of the line and there $1000.00 kits.You can make them all sound great as well.Im not saying don't buy there hi end kits,I'm saying there are alternatives for a great sound at a great price,just fewer options on finishes and configurations or add on drums.Lets face it most if not all the hardware comes from overseas. In this case so do the concept shells.The DW are made in California. Take a look at tama,pearl,Yamaha, even there hi end stuff is made over seas.Something to think about.!!!
@jc3drums9163 жыл бұрын
Of course Tama/Pearl/Yamaha's high end stuff are made overseas, they're Japanese companies.
@thomaskennydrums3 жыл бұрын
Some of Pearl's stuff is made in the USA, and even then it's not exactly a bad thing for Japanese companies to make their products in Japan.
@Jeremy_Sims3 жыл бұрын
@@thomaskennydrums it’s not necessarily about if it’s bad or not. But for all their stuff to be made overseas and for the sound of their mid tier kits to be almost as good as the top of the line kits, it’s another insufficient reason to Not just buy a mid tier kit instead from them.

I was wondering if you could possibly tell me about the quality of the hardware, particularly the tom L arms? I have seen a few people say that you have to really crank the screws into the L arms to get the toms to remain still. Has this been your experience? I know that PDP uses the medium weight 10.5 mm arms instead of the heavy duty 12.7 mm arms, have you found this to be a problem? Especially for someone who hits harder and plays loud rock? Your insight would be greatly appreciated sir. Thank you.
@richardpenner55152 жыл бұрын
@@cd-vq6dz I’m not sure if you’ve figured this out on your own by now, but here’s my $0.02. I’ve owned 3 of the older pdp kits and they were wonderful drums. I’m talking the made in Mexico kits from years ago with the oval lugs. I also just purchased a new Concept maple kit. First point of comparison is the shell material. The older kits were made from North American maple, the newer from Asian maple. They are not the same. NA is harder and denser. A is softer and more absorbent. I’ve found the notes to be clearer, more defined and focused on the older kits. As a result, I found them easier to get sounding good. Shell hardware is basically the same, but the newer dual turret lugs are more snug (I’m assuming because they haven’t been broken in yet). Your comment about the L arm is accurate. The newer ones are very vague, difficult to tighten, and don’t mesh well with the Tom mount. The rubber material that makes the ball is quite inferior to the older stuff. Almost like comparing very hard rubber (old) to vinyl/plastic on the newer. I’m not a fan. On the whole, the newer Concept kits are still a pretty good value, but definitely inferior to the older, Mexican-made versions. Also, the older ones at some point were switched to made in China. I avoid those entirely. Hope this helps.
