If you are having a summer program, how old do you have to be and what are the requirements to get in? And what are the costs?

Hi there! This was for the University of California Education Abroad Program (UCEAP). You had to be a student enrolled at any of the eight campuses and apply to the program. As of 2022, they have discontinued the program for UC students at Tsuru University. You can find more information if you google, "UCEAP" and search for universities in Japan.

How is healthcare/health insurance on EPIK?
@foreversunseekers4 жыл бұрын
South Korean healthcare is cheaper than a cup of starbucks coffee. No, seriously. I would visit the doctor and it cost about 3.00 dollars, get medicine which would cost another 3.00 dollars which was cheaper than my favorite 7.00 dollar drink. The quality is on par or better than my experiences at a hospital in the United States.

How many scholarships did you apply for? How many scholarships did you get ? How much were the amounts of the scholarship/s you won ?
@foreversunseekers5 жыл бұрын
I think it was 7-8 scholarships total that I applied for. In the end, I got three. Gilman and Freeman-Asia scholarships were awarded to me for 5k each. The last scholarship was awarded to me while I was in Japan (Japanese scholarship) called MEXT. I got a stipend of 80,000 yen per month. This was back in 2011 when the dollar was extremely weak compared to the yen. I did take out student loans because a month prior to leaving for my studies, I had been turned down by other scholarships. I was also a pell grant student and received the UC Blue and Gold opportunity grant.

Hi Casey! Not sure if you'll ever see this, but I'm a first time teacher in Korea with EPIK as well! I just have a quick question with how you came up with a material list or supply list for your coteacher to hand in to the principal? I feel like I'm making this harder than it really is, but all I have for materials are just: Name tags card stock paper colored pencils colored markers construction paper and scissors. I don't know if I'm really doing it right and I don't want to risk not having enough materials to prepare for camp. I wanted to ask how you go around coming up with supplies?
@foreversunseekers5 жыл бұрын
Hi Gillian! The way I come up with the materials list is I come up with a detailed agenda for the whole camp. Each day is broken down into individual time blocks with breaks in between. During each time block, I plan out specific activities and thats where the materials list comes in! I ask myself, what materials are necessary for the activities and I make sure I have enough for each student plus some extra just in case. This was super duper simplified, but if you are having a difficult time finding materials/coming up with ideas, I strongly recommend you browse waygook and download files OR I can send you my camp stuff. Don't try to reinvent the wheel. Its not worth the stress. EDIT: Just realized the links are in the description. Check it out if you want to!

Hey! Thanks a lot for going through the trouble to make this video, it clarified a lot of my queries and gave me a clearer idea to approach this process of attaining scholarships in a more systematic manner. There is one thing I would like to ask you, you've mentioned that you applied for scholarship within Japan via your study abroad application, could you please elaborate this process for me as I, myself, am interested in pursuing higher education in Japan for a masters and then a doctoral degree. And does the application process vary from country to country? I would be very grateful, thank you.
@foreversunseekers6 жыл бұрын
Hello! I was a student at University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and they have a system-wide study abroad program that all UC students can apply through. Part of my application package for UC EAP program included a small scholarship section where we were asked to fill out an extra form/write an essay for MEXT scholarship. I'm not sure what college you will be apply through OR if you will look at applying directly to a University in Japan, which in that case will change how you apply. If you google, "MEXT scholarship information" you should be able to find more information. If you you are using something similar to UC EAP to apply, check with your university's study abroad office to see what scholarships are available to students via the application package. I'm not sure what it's like applying for other countries since my main focus (and major) was Japanese studies. Good luck!! :)

I also didn't have a good idea but I googled my home university and what programs they offered, along with what kind of financial aid to expect. I can't give any specific answers because I am not LGBT myself and haven't checked to see what is out there. I hope this helps and good luck! :)

All of the scholarships I applied to were specifically for my low-income status (determined via FAFSA) and academic merit (GPA above 3.00) so I really can't comment beyond that. I did look into "Japanese-American" scholarships (aka racial minority scholarships) and couldn't find very many. I applied for the Gilman scholarship, Freeman-asia scholarship, Boren scholarship, and some that were specific to my home university (UCSD) and my host university (Tsuru University). Good luck!

@foreversunseekers6 жыл бұрын
Hi Sadia, thank you for your comment! Just a disclaimer, I am an American, so I am not sure what the process for applying for study abroad is like for other countries. I would say first decide what you would like to major in, and then go abroad and study those subjects abroad (3rd or 4th year). But that is not to say you can't go abroad during your 2nd year of university, you can! I know at my community college, we had programs that went to Spain and France for the summer to study art, history, etc (general education requirement classes). I guess my advice to you is to investigate what options are available through your domestic university you are applying for and ask questions. If you don't know what you would like to study yet, I would still say look into going abroad :) It is an amazing experience and you learn a lot! Best of luck to you!
