First time I seen this weapon was in Delta Force Land Warrior in 2000. The game made it seem like there was zero recoil

What battalion was this? I was 3d ID and was there in 2012 and none of us wore ISAF patches.

That intermittent buzz in the middle part of the vid brings back memories. I believe it was from that big search radar on the boat. I remember that it would couple into my headset even when I wasn’t connected up to the comm systems one of our birds!

Was stationed at Chu Lai RVN with MAG 12. Had 4 squadrons of A4’s during my tour of 1966- 1967 with the arresting gear and catapult. I really enjoyed my job and my tour having them take the cable on the medal runway.

During my military service, my battalion had an open day for civilians and interested parties. The new Flecktarn (we had olive uniforms) and also this Star Wars rifle were exhibited there in our block. We all thought what kind of plastic thing is that?! Back then we still had the HK G3, which I still love to this day.

People tend to fall into one of two camps on this: either it was all politics and really the rifle was great, or it was no good, overengineered but impractical junk. Really it was neither great or terrible, just too expensive for what it offered. You can get more (cost)effective recoil dampening with muzzle brakes or compensators, while retaining options for further attachments that wouldn't work well with the reciprocating action.

Brought back so many memories of the America and the Catapult Crew I was on. Not only seeing myself on my favorite stations Weight board and JBD safety but seeing shipmates some who are in the hands of God now. Thank you for posting this. RIP Bill Muller who is Topside Safety on Cat 2.

I'm stationed in germany now (2022 to 2025). I find it a bit difficult to get a sense of what life was like back then from these stylized vintage reports. Everything is so perfect it seems. AFN (us military TV broadcast) still has a propaganda like reporting. All the soldiers say only positive things while off camera they are cussing and complaining.

One guy I knew who was crew on these said that the last week before turning them in, they took a good portion of the ammo out on the range and burned through a lot of it just for fun.
