I only moved out of Spokane in spring 2020! City council needs to stop this talk that everyone belongs and actually solve the problems that are dragging the city down. There are more important issues than telling people that everyone belongs. In the past Louisville Kentucky had project housing for homeless people. It may help Spokane to just give emergency housing to someone for 6 months to 2 years until someone circumstances can be fixed with resources or income. The last 3 years has been a nightmare with rents and inflation. Giving someone a fine (fee) for illegal camping when they don’t have an income seems pointless.

Honestly Spokane shouldn’t ever allow public camping. I don’t understand for a liberal city why we don’t just give homeless a studio apartment or tiny home or hotel like room with merit based conditions for staying . I was at a VOA shelter only for families in Louisville Kentucky in 2004. My son and I had a tiny room. I had to take drug tests. I only stayed for 2 to 3 months. My husband and I found an apartment and got back on our feet. I just think everyone deserves a private room with lock and key or a private place that is safe. I couldn’t believe people in the Trent shelter had to sleep next to a stranger in a very large open space. Honestly Spokane needs to get creative for being a liberal city. I don’t understand why people honestly trying to find work are not being given Chromebook with free WiFi. The city could do a fund raiser for a studio apartment building as a long term shelter with maybe an option for family 2 bedroom apartments for up to 1 or 2 years depending on someone circumstances .

*Forward to 55 minutes* They clearly spelled out how council has comingled funds, tax payer dollars. There is no investigation into this? This isn't a matter of paying it back. That's necessary, though too late for some, but this is a legal violation someone should be held accountable for, not to mention removed from their position. Comingling is not only leaving citizens in the dark as Zappone pointed out, and endangering EVERYONE with no traffic unit, but a crime. They also forgot to mention there was no traffic unit for those funds to go to because PD was forced to disband it to cut spending. Officers were reassigned to far less essential positions, saw huge pay reductions due loss of hours and position pay, and left wondering if their jobs would be eliminated altogether. The retirements mean losing the most seasoned, trained, versatile officers, many of whom are in charge of training new officers and overseeing important specialties. With sych outcry for highly trained officers, this seems like recipe for creating a political scapegoat out of our newer and younger officers if complaints are made, whether founded or not. This is all DIRECTLY to eliminate the highest paid officers (time invested) to reduce budget. In the current anti-police climate nationwide and in Spokane council/mayor's office, I'm sure they'll fight over those incentives and the chance to extend their medical closer to Medicare age without continuing to deteriorate and endanger themselves on the job. This has been terribly impactful on the community, with the rate of DUI fatalities and serious injuries from high and drunk drivers, again increased with lax state laws and cultural acceptance of drug use. It isn't just teenagers speeding down Division as someone mentioned in the video. That is a HUGE minimalization of what these officers had been doing prior to the administartion change. I've been in the Spokane community all of my 40 years, and the sharp loss of safety for the average citizen is palpable. This has become especially noticeable as a female and a mother concerned with stranger crimes like home invasion, carjacking, kidnapping, shootings, and unprovoked violent attacks in public places. The police pulled from the traffic unit because NONE of the money allocated was given to the traffic unit weren't even placed into roles specifically trying to tackle violent crime, if my understanding is accurate. You could see them downtown, managing the homeless population, likely council's attempt to fool visitors for the World's Fair anniversary and Hoopfest into thinking Spokane hasn't actually become a terrible place to live and work. The challenges these officers must face personally and the stress it places on their families is directly created by missmanaging out of their control. Officers are demonized and made out to be incompetent, or worse. In reality, they're probably trying so hard not to be thrown under the bus of false allegations it's become difficult to focus on making a dent in local crime. All while miserably understaffed.
