Why will guys spend hundreds doing mods to a knife that doesn't need anything but refuse to do minor mods that don't cost anything to make a good knife great? I don't get it
@NocturneKnives15 күн бұрын
Hey Scott thanks for watching 🙏 I chose to extensively modify the PM2 because I really like it a lot. For the Shaman, you're correct, several of my complaints would be easy mods to fix. But I just don't like the knife as much as the PM2 and I knew that even with those mods I wouldn't keep it. I actually got another Shaman later on (15V version) and really modded the shit out of it. Even then, after making it the best version of the Shaman that I could imagine, I did not like it as much as the PM2. Hope this helps you understand a little.

I have a strop from a local seller in new condition but it's two years old. I hit the edge bevel on this strop on 30' per side and didn't get high sharpness. But when I use my brand new strop it's properly hitting the edge on 20' per side and get me razor sharpness. It's so confusing to me. Do you have any ideas why that happened? My old strop get destroyed by home moisture or leather was bad?
@NocturneKnives16 күн бұрын
I'm a bit confused on what you're saying. Are you saying that you used the first strop at an angle of 30 degrees per side? And the second strop at 20 degrees per side? How many passes did you do? At what angle? How much pressure? Are they strops loaded with any compound?
@XollyWolly16 күн бұрын
@@NocturneKnives Yes. I need to go higher to 30' before I'm reaching the adge on first strop. I tried to do for 20 passes with light pressure. Strops are not loaded with any compound.
@NocturneKnives16 күн бұрын
If you're stropping at 30 degrees per side that is incredibly obtuse, I am not surprised your edge is not very sharp. Is the edge bevel sharpened at 30dps? If not, why are you stropping at such a high angle, and why is the second strop not requiring such a high angle? I suggest loading your strops with compound. A bare strop, as I mention in the video, does little to nothing other than remove any straggling micro burr.
@XollyWolly15 күн бұрын
@@NocturneKnives thank you for helping! I didn't achieve a nice results on old strop however I am impressed with sharpness from the second strop. Maybe first strop have some strange leather 🤷 I should do some experiments with it. Thanks for your time and content❤️

Good video! I personally like to switch around between basswood finished on 600 grit sandpaper and grain side leather (not sanded down). I’ve also found that when reapplying Stroppy Stuff on grain side leather, 2 sprays are enough to cover the whole strop. I tend to get better results with a not so heavy loaded with compound strop.
@NocturneKnives18 күн бұрын
Interesting maybe I'll have to give basswood a shot! Thanks for watching 🙏
@lars4377118 күн бұрын
@@NocturneKnivesdefinitely worth a try, it’s quite cheap. You can also use a lot more pressure without rounding the apex off. Makes getting the exact angle easier. Almost all great sharpeners I talk to, seem to like or prefer basswood. Don’t forget to sand it down to 600 or 1000 grit😏.

How well does this steel do mirror polished?
@NocturneKnives20 күн бұрын
It does just fine, from my limited experience so far. It's much more valuable to tailor edge finish to intended use or personal preference, rather than steel type .
@dustinwhitt529720 күн бұрын
@NocturneKnives well, some steels also take certain edges better than others depending on grain structure/heat treat. If this has tons of tiny, well structured carbides, it should still have bite when polished. I only ask because my Spyderco Lil Temperance 3 is in k390 and I plan on sharpening it soon.
@NocturneKnives20 күн бұрын
@dustinwhitt5297 yes correct! To some extent some steels to take certain edges better. However, optimizing edge finish to cutting application will have vastly more impact on performance than optimizing finish up steel choice (excepting some fringe cases). Of course, it would be the most ideal to optimize BOTH steel and edge finish to the cutting application, but that's often difficult

You’re an amazing sharpener, but I have a question. It looks to me like when you are sharpening with your left hand that you are keeping the blade extremely vertical through the belly when sharpening. You do end up turning the knife to focus on the belly, but not until after many strokes vertical. Seems like after time you will end up straightening that belly. Does that make sense?
@NocturneKnives23 күн бұрын
A couple things... the camera is a bit deceptive in capturing exactly what I'm doing. As I come through the belly I am raising my elbow, even if I'm not turning the knife a lot. It also doesn't look like it, but those strokes I am taking with the knife more perpendicular to the stone are really only barely getting into the start of the belly. Those are more working the transitions from straight edge to belly. Again, it's kinda deceptive with the camera angle. Most importantly, I am making sure to remove an even amount of material from each section of the edge. Regardless of angle, hand position, knife position, etc., the only thing that will cause the actual profile of the edge to change over time is if I actually remove material unevenly from the apex. Hopefully this makes sense, not super easy to explain with words alone. Thanks for watching 🙏
@MrEric082223 күн бұрын
@@NocturneKnives All makes sense! Wish I could use my left hand as well as you; would make things so much simpler. I don’t do well maintaining consistent angle when pushing knife edge away from me. So pretty good pulling toward me since I can see the edge. My edges end up very convex due to inconsistency.
@NocturneKnives23 күн бұрын
It's all a matter of practice! Imo definitely with the investment to learn ambidextrous sharpening. And really, there's nothing wrong with a bit of convexity. The most important things are 1 is the edge sharp and 2 does it perform how you want and need it to.
@CNYKnifeNut24 күн бұрын
Very nice! I know its trendy to hate d2, but i really like sharpening it and once you get the edge dialed into your uses, the performance would probably surprise a lot of detractors. Im sure the majority of people who bash it have never explored it much past a factory edge, with a ton probably not even doing that much.

DLT has them today with plain G10 scales for $262 plus tax. I think I’m up to 60 Spydies now so obviously love the brand, but unless it has some new feature I’m not seeing I think I’ll have to pass on this one.

It's definitely not cheap, but that's just how much Spydercos cost now for the most part. It has the design language of a shaman, but thinner overall and no choil or nub to run into the comp lock cutout. I much prefer to a shaman. Thanks for watching 🙏
@E.L.RipleyAtNostromoАй бұрын
@@NocturneKnives The price is OK, for something a bit more than G10 and S30V. And the only weakness I've ever found on Spydercos is that lack of a sharpening choil, so I'll often cut a small one with a triangular file to have something to lay on the edge of the wetstone. I have to admit on closer inspection it is a beautiful design though, and I especially really like the handle contour, which looks very comfortable. I just hope they come out with some in micarta or CF, in some higher end steels, but you know if it's as much of a success as the Shaman they will. Thanks for the info and first look, as I hadn't even heard it was coming. 👍
