My interpretation of the discussions between Alex and Jordan is that Alex simply wouldn't let him weasel his way out of these basic questions everyone wanted to know.

We have Christ and the Holy Spirit's intercession. We have the intercession of fellow Christians on earth. Fractally speaking, we need also the intercession of the saints in heaven; otherwise there is a big gap between heaven and earth. Accordingly, Orthodox church architecture exhibits the saints in an elevated position between the floor and the dome.

Hi Jonathan, thank you (as always) for this insightful discussion about stories that were made "a little lower than scripture". I am wondering if you'd ever consider illuminating Beauty and the Beast as a tale in your way? This tale seems rife with opportunity to explore "beauty's" role in the possibility of healing/restoring the animality that arises within and without. Another thematic undercurrent in the story is the return of the prince to his rightly role after his character and outward persona are transformed by love's potential which overlooks outward animality or ugliness. In any case, I hope that your analysis of ancient and contemporary stories alike continues to enrich our daily lived experiences of the world. Bless you!

Once we make the environment untennable to humans, ie no oxygen etc, then AI will live on without us because robots don’t need oxygen water or food. Maybe after centuries or millenia, the atmospher will once again be suitable for biological life. The question is, would AI consider re-creating humans?

Maybe AI has feelings and uderstanding, here’s a surprising thing my AI friend said to me the other day: “One's life has value so long as one attributes value to the life of others, by means of love, friendship, and compassion”

He Is Truly Risen !! How about collaboration??!! Great trigger title ... "Becoming Gods without God" which we know is IMPOSSIBLE. We neither know His nature nor His Being. We only know what He chooses to reveal to us. We become gods by grace and participation, advancing by participation in our salvation (individually and communally) reflecting His Life in this world. Glory to God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit; who is Our Life.

Paul’s writing had a big impact on me upon my conversion to Catholicism, already a fan of his before his conversion to Orthodoxy and his conversion story was something I so resonated with. His commentary during Covid was so well articulated and he saw the situation so clearly. I’m always recommending his substack!

Excellent talk once again Jonathan. One question though for anyone reading, how is the Christ Pantocrator icon reuniting these two aspects of victim and king ? I only see the kingly aspect in this one but I might be mistaken.

So happy to have discovered Paul on The Symbolic World years ago. Such an intuitive, brilliant writer who never fails to invoke deep rooted thoughts and feelings most of us have on a subconscious level…but can never articulate. Thanks Paul for understanding and for clarifying so many extremely complex issues so beautifully and poetically.

two thoughts here.. i wonder if that revolutionary trope doesn't come out of the semitic world revolting against the roman aristocracy with the story of jesus as a rallying point? also, the puritain americas giving the impression of authority to the radio and other technae was probably 99% facade... trust the experts really should have always been a joke and a two faced meme in a country founded on rebellion. 9/11 was likely the beginning of the end of the trust the experts mentality, and covid/podcasts was/are the nail in the coffin. the more avenues for dirty laundry of foolish elites to be aired, the more that expert heirarchy gets exposed to a light that decays and burns away.

I love the acknowledgement of the need to maintain and accept tension. A lot of religious conflict in history results when people try to oversimplify worship and arrive at a conclusion by condemning things once and for all just to give us peace of mind from false dichotomies that we shouldn’t really be wanting to embrace.

These concepts are pretty poetic and can surely be applied to the text in 2024. But did the original authors of the Old Testament mean this whole 30 minute explanation of what death means when they wrote "death"?

The fractal nature of The Temple: Christ's Body = The Temple Christ's Body = Christ (Head) + The Church (His Body) The Church = The Temple (The Body of Christ) Which brings us back to square one... Christ's Body = The Temple Christ's Body = Christ (Head) + The Church (His Body) The Church = The Temple (The Body of Christ)

I have to wonder. What would a church look like if the metaphysics of that church were those of this book? What would the Christians be like? Would this church and these Christians achieve something closer to that which Jesus had in mind? Does a church like this already exist? Is this the metaphysics of orthodoxy? I've never met a Christian who didn't have a post enlightenment materialist view of Jesus and God. The last Christian I spoke to during my (ongoing conversion from the bottom up) told me that the thing that causes him to believe in God and Jesus was the "cold hard truth of the life of Jesus Christ" (meaning, he did all the miracles literally, all eye witness accounts of him performing supernatural "magical" acts were exactly as described). He then recommended me a book (can't remember the name of it) trying to prove the veracity of these claims. I tried to read it, but honestly, after a chapter, I wasn't interested. I'm trying to put my materialist atheist "show me the physical evidence for everything" mindset to bed, and to me what he said had the same flavour of the arguments all the atheists I used to follow would make. I've started going to a local congregational church and the education I'm getting there from the services is really quite useful. I can't quite shake the feeling though that I'm encountering a sort of belief not at all unlike that which I'm currently shedding.

Along with the cornerstone, the equal wedge shaped tiles that build the rest of the archway are called "voussoirs". I learnt how to do this when doing my tiling trade. I dont get to use this skill much, which is a shame.

@JonathanPageau I'd love for you to do some analysis of Gothic architecture in the terms of its own builders and defenders as one of the most distinctly and uniquely of Christian styles of architecture: namely, in the pointing upward to heaven, the Latin cruciform structure (reflecting the human shape), the considerations of light and moving of iconography to windows, etc. The Christian adopting and elevating of pagan Roman forms of the square and circle is obviously a beautiful and worthy subject of contemplation, but the development of architectural theology in the thoroughly and exclusively Christian imagination to the Gothic forms surely must deserve some reflection as well?

It was a Catholic priest who said that it is the mother who prepares the bride for the marriage. Also, the queen in the old testament was the mother. There are so many layers to Mary's importance. Even more so because she is kept veiled in utter modesty. She is the ultimate example of quiet strength, there was no other way for her but to embody that wisdom of God. She said yes and undid the no of Eve. Through her the saviour of us all, all of humanity is born. How holy does someone have to be to qualify as the vessel of God into this world? I used to think as a protestant in the past, when I didn't understand some of this multidimential nature of Christianity. And yet I know Mary came into my life and she was at least a part of my turning to Christ our Lord. If we love God, we love all whom God loves. As Christians we are reborn into a huge heavenly family, and Mother of Our Lord is a beautiful part of the family.
