Glad it helped you out :) I need to make a revised video of this one of these days to show what I do now. This method works very well, but it's tedious when you go to move kicks/snares around. The new way I do this works better, and doesn't require laying these out which saves a lot of time. I'll try to find time to setup an example and make a video here soon!

This is my main issue with Ableton...why not have a simple button or a checkmark on the vst container that says use as midi device. And then you could drop any Synth or instrument after cthulu or any midi arp etc on the same f'in track. Why this roundabout way of doing things...create a dummy track then load midi plugin on that track add another track for the instrument, route midi from the midi plugin track onto the instrument track just to be able to use a midi arp(not from Ableton) to trigger a vst Synth. It's pretty crazy that Ableton has so many amazing features but not such a simple button to allow using a plugin as a midi device. 😭
@visheshl
@visheshl Жыл бұрын
And if the user tries to use this 'use as midi plugin' button on an audio vst... obviously no midi data would be sent out from it...that's it that's all that would happen....

I think this only works with cthulu bc thats how it was designed. Trying to capture the arp midi from Diva with no luck.
@haivemusic
@haivemusic 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it only works for VST's where the manufacturer has built in Midi output. Without it, Ableton won't have anything to latch on to. Things like Cthulhu and the stock Ableton plugins will work. I'm sure there are other raw-midi VST's out there that will work as well, but I don't use any, so I'm unfamiliar with any other examples. However, I have found (somewhat) of a workaround, and made a follow-up video regarding this exact topic on how to capture midi/arp information from 3rd party VSTs that don't support MIDI output to Ableton. It's not a perfect/100% foolproof solution, but I've found it to work fairly well in my trials/exploration of it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZu2lHSjp91kl68

Now in May '21, on Live 11, I too can't get the plugin to show up in the 2nd drop-down of the Bounce track Inputs. :^{ One thing I noticed from Ableton's User Guide is that this midi routing won't work with AU plugins (Mac only), so I've been careful to only load VST versions. But in the 2nd drop-down I still only get the options 'Post FX' or 'Pre FX' - the plugin itself doesn't show up. :^/ As source track, so far I've tried an Arturia synth (to route its arpeggiator's output midi), and the same from UVI Workstation. Aaaargh!
@haivemusic
@haivemusic 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I have updated to Live 11 as well since originally making this video. While I don't have either UVI Workstation or Arturia, I have checked this with say Omnisphere and I experience the same thing. I think it comes down to the individual plugin/VST manufactuer and how they've setup their arp routing methods for their software. I think some of them (like the ones you've listed, Omnisphere, etc) are using only internally routeable ARP's. I'm not sure if that's due to limitations with how they've designed their VST's internal routing, or if they just didn't think anyone would want to capture the midi output? Def frustrating when you have a capable VST yet can't easily get what you need out. The only workaround I can think of, would be to use the arp of the VST you're using and use it to generate a very short/stabby pluck sound (something *very* simple - say, a sine beep - nothing too harmonically crazy), then make your arp in the app, flatten/freeze (or bounce) your audio out of the VST, then try playing around with Ableton's convert to midi functions. I'm not sure how well this would work, but it might be worth a shot. I've had some really amazing results from that thing (and, also really poor results too haha). That's actually an idea for a good video. I'll have to play around with that, and if it's feasible and reliable, I'll make a video about that here! Hopefully that can help some other people. I also wasn't aware of the AU plugins not routing this way. Good to know. I strictly use VST's myself, but I'm sure there are a lot of people who do rely on AU's. Thanks!
@pbasswil
@pbasswil 3 жыл бұрын
@@haivemusic H.M., that was singularly useful response, I appreciate it! I think I'll keep trying different source plugins to see if I can find one that works (so I'll know I'm doing the routing right). Then I'll contact UVI, and _beseech_ them to route their MIDI out - or to tell me if I'm missing something obvious. Btw, Convert-To-Midi sounds like a great work around. As it happens, at the moment I'm using Live Studio Edition, which lacks that feature. :^/ Cheers - pw

@@pbasswil You're most welcome! I didn't realize that Studio also didn't have that feature. That def does make things a bit difficult. I spent some time messing around with this idea today with some very promising results, and ended up making a video in hopes that it would help you / others out who have experienced this issue. If you hear anything back from the various VST companies after reaching out to them, def let me know if you can - I'd certainly be interested to hear their thoughts/reasoning/willingness to implement this. In the event you ever upgrade beyond the Studio Edition, here's a video I made today showing how well the convert to Midi method works for this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZu2lHSjp91kl68

@@haivemusic Thanks H.M., I have a licence for the full Live Suite 9 (which isn't compatible with current Mac OS), but since I've only been dabbling lately, couldn't justify the (imho excessive) cost to upgrade it to v. 11 at the moment - so decided $99 for the 16 track version would be plenty for now. Yep, glad I found your channel, I'll keep checking out your excellent content. Thanks again, I'll keep you posted if I figure anything out re. midi bounce. - pw

Good video, very well explained. May I add that also one of the main advantages of using ghost triggers is that you don't have to continuously go back to the compressor to re-adjust the settings everytime the gain of the trigger changes since it's already fixed. Correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks!
@haivemusic
@haivemusic 3 жыл бұрын
An excellent point - I would say that it would depend upon where you're adjusting and taking your sidechain source from. If you were taking it Pre FX, then it likely wouldn't matter (unless you were using a synth/sampler and adjusting the output gain directly from that). But if you were taking your sidechain source from Post FX, then adjusting any of the FX on that source channel (or assuming you're doing Post Mixer - adjusting the mixer fader) - then yes - that would alter the incoming signal. It's really hard to specifically state what would happen in all scenarios given it would highly depend upon what/where you were changing things, but this is definitely another benefit - Thanks for bringing this up!

i tried this but i always hear a clicking sound (the transient placed on the drums) when the sub ducks the volume for letting the input through. need to put threshold and attack all the way up, but then the compressor does'nt have to work anymore.. how can i fix this problem?
@haivemusic
@haivemusic 4 жыл бұрын
Without seeing exactly what you're using/doing, it's difficult to say for certain but, if I had to guess, I'd say that you're probably using the Live 9 compressor to do sidechaining this way? If so, that's what's causing it. The Live 9 compressor doesn't react fast enough, and it causes clicking. Super annoying. What you'll want to do is use the older Live 8 compressor on FF1 mode instead. That will solve your issue! I made a video about this exact same thing and compared the Live 8 and Live 9 compressors earlier in this tutorial series. I'll put a link to the video below. Hopefully it helps! If not, please feel free to reach back out. Haive Music - Ableton Tutorial - 03 - Ableton 8 vs Ableton 9 Compressor kzbin.info/www/bejne/fmici6yird1-fJo

How do I record and change Arturia's vst instruments and sounds on Ableton?
@haivemusic
@haivemusic 4 жыл бұрын
You could either set your VST's sound you want, then freeze/flatten the track down to audio, or you could bounce it down to audio by making a new audio track, and setting the input of that new track to the channel the Arturia VST is on, or soloing that channel and selecting "Resampling" as the input type, then arming the track and hitting record. I don't have an *exact* video showing how to do this, but another one of my tutorials shows the basic idea behind it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qHPGoYGsaM15oKc If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to me on Facebook, and I can go over some stuff in detail with you.

@@CervezasObsonMex Hmmm... seems kind of odd you're having trouble with all of those. I think perhaps it depends on what the plugin is actually exporting out that can be pulled down. @@haivemusic Yes that is exactly what I want to record, the "trance" midi presets from the plugins like: gater pro, mrythmizer, gross beat, so they wont work? ...
@haivemusic
@haivemusic 4 жыл бұрын
@@CervezasObsonMex I'm honestly not sure. As far as I'm aware, those plugins accept MIDI information into them to perform their groove on a signal. I don't think they export/output MIDI information. I'm not super familiar with them, so I may be incorrect here, but I think maybe you're using them in reverse? It would make sense to me that you would feed information into them to form the beats you want, vs them exporting MIDI. I think that's why they aren't showing up - there's nothing for them to export. I do expect they would accept incoming MIDI information if you created a MIDI track in Ableon, and fed it into them though.
