Sir i have a question. Actually im confused... My question is,.. we can see CH2OH on carbon number 5 of pentose sugar on which phosphate group is attached....... Now when phosphate group attaches to hydroxyl group of carbon number three of other nucleotide, we see OH of phosphate and OH of 3rd carbon combine and release H2O... But my question is that where did OH group go that was present on Carbon 5 as CH2OH???? Kindly answer....

I think, the -OH group of the phosphate ion loses a proton then give its O to form a phosphodiester bond. And the -OH that belongs to CH2OH of sugar joins to that hydrogen, so a water molecule is formed. Not sure if its true just my opinion.
