Can you or someone out there explain in better detail how/what was used to mount the strut rails? Thank you

2024 update, none of the links for the mounting components point to product still available. Were the angle mounts "Rich Solar 28" Adjustable Tilt Mount"? Looks to be the same product only now it appears they sell the deck mounting plates and hardware separate from the angle mounts. Great vids and setup, thanks much!

Very interesting way of mounting solar panels. However, I am worried about how to secure the strut channel to the roof of our Class A. Our RV has almost no wood in the roof, except a 1/4" luaun plywood, which wouldn't hold a screw. The rest is various foam layers designed for insulation. There is an alluminum super structure built in, but how could I find the cross bars hidden in the roof? Now, I have heard about a special double-sided tape which I could imagine to put under the strut channel. What do you think about this?
@dreamlookautodetailingauto3353Ай бұрын
You could also use a good construction adhesive.
@peterharwerthyahooАй бұрын
I have followed your idea with using strut channel together with eternabond. I am absolutely amazed how strong the bond is. I have tried with all my strength to pull the channel off of the roof again, but there was no way. I have also used Sikaflex 252 along the edges of the strut channel. I have now 12 panels on the roof in 4 groups of three. Very happy with the result.

Anyone know how we mounted the strut channel to the roof?
@michaelprue90242 ай бұрын
A lot of good info here. Thank you, you’ve got me thinking about my install when it comes time. One question I have is , Your roof membrane seems to be the rubber roof membrane most RVs have these days. Aren’t you worried about the life of that membrane ? I know they say they last up to 20 years, but it’s been my experience after 10 you’re really pushing it, 15 years and you’re way past should have, and closer to 20 ??? I’m wondering if a good TPO would be a better foundation for solar.

Self tapping screws are great for metal but not wood, they blow out the hole in wood...just an fyi ;)

For improved aerodynamics thus fuel savings and maybe even some noise reduction might I suggest a wind deflector wing at the front edge of the camper..

Maybe I missed it somewhere in your videos but my question and it seems the most obvious question to me is, how so you mount the strut channel to the roof? What size, I assume lag bolts? with rubber washers? how do you find the roof trusses? screwed into every one or I think you mentioned every second one? sealant for these screws? etc etc etc. the rest of the install seem mostly straightforward but the mounting of the actual metal to the roof is critical to be done right and seems like I missed it somehow

If you don't mind. could you provide the specs on those self tapping screws you used to fasten the strut to the roof rafters of the RV? Trying to decide on #10 or #12 and not sure about ideal length. Tried to look for that kit you got since you mention those screws came with it and you had a bunch of extras but the kits I found online don't show the fasteners.

Using self tapping screws... could have crewed through metal making a new smaller hole and used even fewer screws with better holding power per screw. But hind sight is 20/20. 😁

good video, there were a few idea gems in there. The main concept of the struts supporting a tilting L support for the solar panels is brilliant. solves most curved roof problems and does it efficiently and elegantly with added versatility and clearance for airflow under the panels.

i still love your mounting deal. but never use snap washers in places of important needs. use lock tite on bare threads. use nulocks where you can use a reg nut. ( no lock tite on nylocks ). now foe me to start saving my penny's to buy the struts for my rv roof ( i have a source for 4 good second hand panels for free.). but yes i will get them powder coated. if nothing else just the white looks like a cleaner install.

I absolutely love this system. A major game changer for intstalling pv on an rv roof. You had me laughing about the powder coating. It's always great to include the wife in the decisions, all the decisions. LOL. But brother, galvanized, unpainted struts will outlast several human lifetimes being in any weather 24/7.
@dougyoes7 ай бұрын
Except for one thing, Jack. Dissimilar metals can cause some real corrosion issues over time. Unistrut is steel. Yes, it's galvanized. That's great. But having aluminum angle in direct contact with the strut steel will cause corrosion. Water and accumulated snow will speed up the corrosion. That is, unless you powder-coat either the unistrut and/or the aluminum. So... his wife is a genius. LOL
@larryjanson40117 ай бұрын
easy fix. use galvanized angles. also power coated. but i would like to here how this has held up to years, and cyclone winds, snow,etc.
2 ай бұрын
One issue he avoids with the powder coating is the stans and streaks that come from when water interacts with metal as they leach off that original coating.. I have seen several campers that have this at the summer camp park lots that make fairly new units look old like leaf tannin staining.. He did say it was close to overkill but his choice so you do you..

How did you attached the railing to the roof?
@ttman50699 ай бұрын
Just found this video! Excellent idea, and explanation, thank you for sharing. Epoxy appliance paint holds up well outdoors. You might think about using rivet nuts on your angle pieces that hold up the panel when tilted instead of the wing nuts and washers. It is less parts to lose and it would make for faster set up/tear down.
@fisherguy9 ай бұрын
You should have mounted the long rails on shorter pieces place perpendicular to them screwd into the trailer framing so the long pieces don't trap water, leaved pine needles etc. The more pooling water the greater the chance of a leak.
