This is a really hard story to read, (in my opinion) as it's pretty grim, and the confession is heartbreaking, sinister and gut wrenching. So I just wanted to congratulate you on your rendition. Your interpretation of the culprit (his accent, tone, everything) is really excellent, because you make him (wholly unjustifiable as his actions are, especially after they became deeply estranged) truly tortured and so that you can hear that he did have the capacity to be a good man, but was knocked by circumstance to be the worst person he could be instead of remaining a loving husband. Powerful stuff, and making a dark read as compelling, illuminating and fascinating as it could be. No mean feat! Impressive.

I am so glad you think so. I feel that Conan Doyle really does a good job of having his characters explain their motivations, even if they're abhorrent. I try to bring that same consideration to my readings to portray them in a fully realized way.

These are great! Please record some more of Sherlock Holmes! (Radio 4's Clive Merrison and Michael Williams series are super but a dramatisation isn't the same as hearing it read well 😊.) This is a brilliant series and it would be excellent to hear more of your interpretations of these all time classic stories.

This is the fourth of your series I have listened to 😊. I first discovered the channel while looking for Mary Norton's 'The Borrowers', which I only remembered vaguely from childhood, but was engaged by your sympathetic reading of it. Then 'Mary Poppins' and 'Mary Poppins Comes Back' which again, I hardly remembered and appreciated your interpretations of (I had never realised it's influence on my own work). And I have also listened to 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' but it's so very trippy (listening in the evening) I'm afraid I always fall asleep so cannot give any proper review aside from it being relaxing. 'Emma' however, I have not reserved for trying to drift off to, but rather listened to at any moment during the day when I could, and will undoubtedly do so again! (As an aside these readings have helped me focus on something more positive through some difficult days this year so I am most grateful for your channel on that account also.)

@@withywheel I'm actually incredibly flattered that you can fall asleep to my readings! I hope that the difficult days will soon be in the rear view mirror, and am honored that I could be of some assistance in getting through them. 🧡

Indeed yes, sometimes your readings have been the main bright spot in the days. I'm very glad of something so positive as your excellent, measured, thoughtful and meaningful renditions of favourite and other classic books to turn to. You have my heartfelt thanks.

It's so lovely to not only listen to this marvellous book well read, but to hear that one's view of Jane Austen's genius is shared by another reader who is so thoughtful and with such very well expressed opinions. So glad to have discovered your channel and especially this series. Thank you!

Thank you for choosing to read Emma! I love all Jane Austen's books, but this is one of the best. What's fascinating too (for myself, as I have read the book many times) is to hear it read well by someone who doesn't know what's coming next! Your annunciation and diction are so excellently correct in general, that it is a treat to listen to, and makes one more disposed to be attentive to what your opinion is in your role as reader. So while I have eschewed book clubs (being perhaps too picky about the books chosen), this captures something of 'the best sort of book club' if that makes sense? Mostly when readers of audio books give their musings on the text, I fast forward, but yours are so considered, refined and well expressed that I always listen to them. It gives Emma (perhaps the 30th time I have journeyed through the story) an additional interest this time, to hear what a well judging and thoughtful interpreter of the book is thinking as the book unfolds. So thank you again, I am very pleased indeed to have found your channel 😊.

I’m no expert in accents by any means, so it could just be my own ignorance, but I would never have guessed you were Australian! Do you change your voice for this channel? For that matter, are you an actor? You seem to have great ability there, so it wouldn’t surprise me.
@SoftStories6 ай бұрын
You're quite right, I'm far from the quintessential Australian accent. This is my natural accent, though! My family moved around a lot when I was young, and my father grew up in England; I presume that has something to do with it. I acted in plays at school, but haven't really since. I'm auditioning for audiobooks right now, though, and enjoying that process. I also run a D&D campaign, which requires me to flex those acting muscles again. Thank you for your compliments!

I on purpose waited a while to come back until you had read a good chunk for me to watch, one after the other and I am so in love with the book right now. I have always loved the stage version but hearing the books is wonderful becuase it gives you an insight to what PL was like in the way she writes. I cannot hold the attention to read the books myself as it does not go in my mind but hearing them is so wonderful and stress free.
