Excellent discussion, it has given answers to lots of my questions regarding iPhone’s regular Raw vs ProRaw. One of them still remained open: the resolution of the main camera, 24 mm canera is 48 megapixels. The resolution of a ProRaw file is 48 MP, but regular Raw only 12 MP. Why is that? The sensor data of 48 MP is there, why ony 12 MP is “given” by Apple when using standard Raw format? Thanks.
@TheiPhoneographyPodcast8 күн бұрын
The best answer I can give you on this is that Apple has put the limitation on Bayer RAW files to 12MP right in iOS and only ProRAW files can go to the full 48MP. Since the limitation is right in the OS, third party camera app developers can’t tap into the API to get their apps to shoot the full 48. I’ve never heard anywhere what the reasoning is behind the limitation.

Constructive criticism, Greg, you did not introduce Dwight in the KZbin intro and once you guys get going it's ok but very awkward handoffs etc. Needs to be smoother in terms of the flow . Consultation and/or management of KZbin would help. I am sure I am not the first to recommend this to you guys.

Thank you for your feedback. You are absolutely correct and that’s a very bad oversight on my part. I’m always trying to find ways to improve the show and how it goes. Admittedly, running the livestream is a little confusing because I do it all myself and don’t have any hardware that could help me with the flow. I will sit down before the next one and make some guidelines to follow to help with the way things go. Thanks again. I appreciate you.

Thanks for this most useful and interesting discussion about the Fig camera. I've now tried it for a couple of days. I'm encouraged by its potential and have a couple of comments: - I agree that the on-screen shutter release button is too far from the edge of the screen on my 15PM in both landscape and portrait orientation, and I have very large hands. (25:00) Moving the 'T' position towards the short edge would be better, with smaller captured image and selection buttons. - I use a close-fit Neewer cage with Bluetooth shutter release grip most of the time and the app (now?) recognises the Bluetooth signal. (29:00) - ***I very much like the ability to create my own image process (**31:00**), which effectively behaves like a Preset, in the Fig app. My primary use-case is to create high contrast B&W images. My benchmark app for this use-case is the Leica Lux with the Leica Look BW High Contrast, or Lr Mobile Presets for B&W using my own or some that simulate the Leica Look. Fig shows good potential to be very useful in this area. I've created a new image process for this use-case but haven't found the sweet spot yet that matches what I can do in Lr, but I'll keep trying.*** - I like the option to use LUTs and have tested it with some I installed for video with the Blackmagic Camera, including a Kodak Eastman B&W LUT. - I couldn't see an option to delete a new image process. This needs to be added/clearer. - The Alpha tone curve discussion was interesting and I'd like to see the detail when it is formally released (37:00) - The ability to share or download the an image process would be very good (38:00) This would like the sharing Lr feature in Cloud/Community - It would be good to be able to switch from one image process style to another in the app. (43:00) Leica Lux allows pre and post application of 'looks' in app, albeit in JPEG format, and they are not 'baked in' because there is 'None' option that is basic image data. - 48MP capture option would be most useful (46:00) - In the fullness of time, we should have available all the lens options (28mm, 35mm & 50mm) to be included with cropped resolution from the 24mm/1x sensor (48:00) In summary, the USP is the ability to tailor the image processing and this will be worth tracking during the development phase.

I see your point. I think I can insert the images into the audio version on KZbin, I’ll look into that when time permits. If you listen on your iPhone you will see the images in the Podcasts app and others, but not Spotify. I’m assuming you just want to listen with the opportunity to just see the relevant images and not watch the video version on the channel?

Hey guys. Not sure where to comment so I’ll do it here. Been listening to your podcast for a while and heard you guys going on about the 48mp etc. don’t be fooled: The 48mp is a marketing hoax as the sensor is 12Mp. There are plenty of videos proving that the 48mp images don’t even reach the detail of true 12Mp. Don’t get me wrong, love my 15 pro max but even in the 16 pro the sensor stays 12Mp, not 48mp.
@TheiPhoneographyPodcast2 ай бұрын
I’m not sure I agree with you on that. When I shoot a 48MP image and look at the metadata the pixel dimensions are 48MP. When you shoot in certain formats like macro or Night Mode, the sensor performs pixel binning which groups the pixels in blocks of four, thus creating a 12MP file. You can also set the camera to produce 24MP images as the default. I’d be interested in seeing these videos. Could you send the links to [email protected]?
@LordofthefieldАй бұрын
@@TheiPhoneographyPodcast It’s a simple fact that the sensor is 12MP. So it is the other way around - it divides one pixel into 4 sub-pixels to create a “48mp” - image. Whereas the process might be good, none of the images actually has more detail than a proper 12MP camera filter gives you.
@TheiPhoneographyPodcastАй бұрын
@@Lordofthefield do you have any documentation to illustrate your claim? Anything that I see explains it as 48MP that get grouped together by 4 to give you a 12MP file. I know a guy in the Camera dept at Apple. I’ll ask him.
@TheiPhoneographyPodcastАй бұрын
@@Lordofthefield I reached out to my friend at Apple who works right in the camera department and he affirmed my point with the following, and this is copied directly from his message to me: “You are right. The sensor is 48MP. The resulting 12MP image is ‘binned’ from the higher resolution source. This results in a lower noise profile”

Love this, but how do you take a 30 second photo on the standard iPhone camera app? I cannot find anywhere on there or online showing how to adjust the shutter speed to 30 seconds or longer without having to download a separate camera app.
@TheiPhoneographyPodcast3 ай бұрын
You have to use the Apple Camera app and in Night Mode, set the length of the shot to 30 seconds. You can only do this when the phone is on a tripod or sitting on something still. If you try it handheld you can only go 10 seconds. The Apple Camera app is the only app that can capture the Milky Way.

From my experience the Foto-App does do some funny things with the data, even in RAW. These 30 seconds as I understand it are more like a 30 second movie stacked internally. The results are amazing, but when I tried to stack ten of those images it turned out really weird and was impossible to fix with my LR-knowledge. In the middle it was overly bright and in the periphery so dark it was impossible to get it balanced. I might look for an app where I can really manually adjust shutter speed and so on. Thx for the video!
@TheiPhoneographyPodcast4 ай бұрын
The 30 second Night Mode shot on the iPhone isn’t a movie, it’s three 10 second exposures stacked together. It used to be ten 3 second exposures but it changed in either the 13 Pro or the 14 Pro. For editing these types of images, the Photos app doesn’t do well. You need the Dehaze feature in Lr to bring out the galactic core. I recommend checking out Shayne Mostyn’s channel via the link in the description and look for his videos where he shows how to capture and edit a shot like this.

Photography has opened my eyes to the world around me. It encourages me to get out into nature and open green spaces. I also enjoy visiting our busy capital city London, and going to the many historical places and parks that we are blessed with. Without the joy that photography brings me, I wouldn’t see what was on my doorstep! When I’m out taking photos I get lost in the process and my own little world, I love it!

Greg and Dave, the world around us is wonderful. Before my interest in photography, I would walk right by just about everything. Now, I seem to see every flower. I am constantly composing images in my mind as I see much more around me in my environment. For this, I am thankful for this hobby. It has forced me to slow down and take notice. So why? I like to capture memories and the best composition possible. This is the challenge for me. I feel that if I can capture the photo properly, then I can communicate properly and extend to others what I see. Then the art of this hobby is to edit the capture to recreate the scene as I remember it. Of course unless I am doing an artistic version which is another path.
