For those who don't know the backstory of "birdsong" The text itself was collected and compiled by prisoners in Concentration Camps in WWII. Even when they were facing the worst humanity has to offer, they still found hope in music.

I sang this in middle school. I was going through some hard depression. (I still am to some degree). One of the people that pulled me through was named Jackie, she was a fellow Alto and a year behind me. Eventually, we lost touch when we both got into high school. She went into softball, I stayed in the choir program. Jackie passed away unexpectedly last week. She was 24. I'm planning to share this song at her Celebration of Life Ceremony.

I'm 10 years too late to comment here, but I did this with my choir last year while my mum was very ill. She passed away before we sang this in a concert, but ever since I first heard this song it made me think of her. After she passed every lyric felt even more about her. This is the only video I can find which was the same arrangement I sang with my choir, and it's a beautiful piece - I'm so glad this video is here, I often come back to it. This is such a beautiful rendition. I'm far from religious, but this hymn in this arrangement, sung as magnificently as this, makes me hope differently

The choir is amazing. The rendition of the song is an absolute shame. What in the heck is that? And to make it worse you pronounced Twillingate wrong. That should never be heard again. I can see all the Newfies getting up and doing the Jigg to that. No. Erase that version. That’s terrible.

I sang this piece back in 5th grade for a competition and coming back to it i cant listen to it without crying. The piece itself is absolutely beautiful and always made me tear up while practicing it but i cry now because i miss my choir days when i was younger. I truly loved my composer and the people i sang with. Truly a time and piece that i will always remember and cherish

Remember folks.......it is a song of making it through hard times......working so hard for the cod and not getting ahead.......of making through the hardships of a Newfoundland winter...all you have left is rotten fish and spoiled butter......you head for the dance despite it all.....of not being able too contain your excitement ... it is Spring!!! .......Grab your girl and take off for the boat and head for the dances in the other fishing towns....all around the shore.....all around the circle...Wicked by's!

great job! but the director should have instructed them to smile, even though it's bittersweet. the message doesn't translate that it's "wonderful to be alive".
@kimberlykelsey11886 жыл бұрын
deborah colageo I appreciate that you want them to look like they are enjoying themselves but smiling changes the sound and makes the song sound like it was sung by toddlers. Choirs have to keep the corners of their mouths close in order to sound professional.
