@ChadEtchisonКүн бұрын
Sometimes the faders will stick. Move the faders up ad down quickly on the tracks you're trying to hear; this sort of 'activates' the track. Go over to the master and make sure that it is at 100. Go to PAN/EQ and make sure that the tracks that you want to hear are up at 100.

Hey man looks great!! Love your video. Ihave a shellac guitar project going right now. I started with an acrylic painted body in the style of Jimmy Pages dragon caster. The guitar I got for 100 bucks on reverb is a squier affinity tele. Getting the Page design exact became too challenging so i was gonna scrap the idea but thought what thevhell I'll make it my own dragon!! So off I went. It came out pretty good and everyone is telling me you got to lacquer finish it but I git no place to safely do it so instead of killing the cats and my family and myself I turned to shellac as a finish. I got about 4 real thin coats on it right now and it could be a bit smoother so I was going to lightly sand but I don't want to mess up what I got. So Zi am at a crossroads with the project. Should I sand lightly? Should I keep adding more dewaxed zinsheer spray coats? Should I put oul on. My gut tells me to stay with shellac but still not sure how many coats to do. Oh an I can't thank you enough for telling the story about taking time with the project. This project has been going close to 3 months an for once in my life I haven't rushed things along and its good for my well being. Any help advice you got for me would be greatly appreciated. And thanks tor the awesome video and look inside your projects and life. Live well
@ChadEtchison12 күн бұрын
Sounds like a killer project! I love the dragon idea was well, and I like the idea of adding your own flair. Try mixing shellac with denatured alcohol at 505/50 and see if applying new shellac releases the old shellac bubbles. Or you could try olive oil and a light sanding with 0000steel wool. Like you said, you have to be careful sanding. I hope it works out! I left my in a bit of a relic state. It has aged nicely and was never perf3ct, which gave me a lot of freedom.

Excellent tips on stacking drums there Chad. The energy on this version is really great, many bands have preferred their demo or original version of songs to ones that were later rerecorded. Nice one mate.
@ChadEtchison19 күн бұрын
You're so right, John -- the energy is where it's at with this track. I definitely couldn't beat it, and it turned into somewhat of a fool's errand, but it was more time in the saddle and I didn't have the other one ready yet, so it was not wasted time, but I did decide: no reecordes!

If you are a player in a band without a bassist a 4x12 is better. With a good bass player you don’t need that bass. In recordings it’s very bad to have 3 bass sounds like a kick a bass and a guitar with basssounds. I accidentally com a cross this vid . I got a 4x10 cab it got more a bleuss sound that cut through a mix of instruments with a more mid tone. It accentuates more the tube tone of a tube amp. Or maybe too much. Some time it pis me off some times I like it.

So right about rolling back the bass gain, I'm also guilty of that on drums! And the info on using the bass presets! It's sometimes hard not to want to make do with a track and waste a lot of time trying to massage it into being "good enough" Try another take or two, it's inspiring to see you not hesitate to dig back in! And when you do you frequently pull off something even better... Great job!

Hi Chad, cool to learn from your process. What is your take on guitar effect pedals, do you ever use them or always go straight to the amp?
@ChadEtchisonАй бұрын
Great question! I have had a history of using them when I was younger. I used a Distortion +, a Little Big Muff, a Phaser 90 and a MXR compressor. They all sounded cool, but I had a really cheap Peavey Bandit amp, haha! The pedals made that amp sound better, but when I started playing out and touring, I moved up to a Marshall 25/50 combo amp, and it's like a JCM 800 and has built-in overdrive in the circuit. I stopped using pedals due to hating the stress of worrying about the connecting cables, batteries, and other technical glitches. I tend to go to simple, and when I wired this GDS Marshall 18 watt copy, it sounded so good that every pedal I put in front of it makes it sound worse. The same gos for by Deluxe -- very pure tone without pedals. There are a lot of extra connections, circuitry, and what-not introduced with a pedal board. There is something beautiful about plugging straight in!

Hi Chad.. nice stuff... I was a drummer in various bands in Ireland for about 30 years, I was never much good but I was paid regularly and wracked up hundreds of gigs in all sorts of venues playing all sorts of styles.. the main thing I learned about drumming was keep it simple and steady, play within yourself.. then the song and musicians playing it can " breathe" .. So my point.. what you did there on this video is a great example of those things.. simple , steady with just the right level of excitement or drive.. cool dude well done.. i look forward to hearing the finished song and yeah i agree with you about the getting nervous half way through the song overthinking it really.. but you nailed it second time around. . Nice one. I must say though, I much prefer playing guitar and singing now, songwriting and recording too.. after all those years behind the drums it's very liberating plus I don't have to haul around as much equipment to gigs 🤓🤣 And .. what's that trick you learned from Steve albini about the drum heads?.. I'd be interested to know it.. Keep up the good work, I always enjoy the channel.. 🎸🥁🤘🤘✌️✌️
@ChadEtchisonАй бұрын
Oh, thank you, Andy for this wonderful anecdote! That is always welcome and desired, as I love rock and roll stories! Thank you for your ongoing contribution. I fully agree with all of your drumming advice, simple is all I'm capable right now, and I don't think I would be a good, real drummer -- recording only! The stress of being either a drummer or a singer is real! They both have upsides and downs. The heat gun trick is the coolest. When we recorded with Steve, he had a set there iwth some rough looking heads and we thought we were going to need to change them. He got his heat gun and heated up the top of the heads and they all snapped back into place! I'll do a vid showing how it works, and it works great. Just turn it on high and move it around the dents until they pop back up.

Hey Chad, pretty much what I do using the R24, do you ever use the scratch track and blend it with your final guitar track? Sounds like a good one!
@ChadEtchison2 ай бұрын
Yes, Nero you could definitely use that track. It could be lower in the mix or even split out with another track. Another thing I;ve done is to layer an acoustic track and then have that low in the mix to just provide texture and a percussive feeling. I'm hoping that the amp sounds great on this track, because that is one of the main problems with the original recording. The pickups were noisy and I dropped the ball on the miking.
