Hey Evan, great question! You don’t lose any capabilities. If you don’t plug the phone in, then the Bluetooth will work as normal. If you plug it in then you’ll have to play the music through the Apple CarPlay

Hey Brandon! You hit the nail on the head. You’ll have to upgrade the head unit to a sync 3 unit before you can do this. It wont work with your current hardware. It’s definitely possible and not too difficult. Just make sure you pull the radios wiring harness for both your sync 2 unit and sync 3 unit so you can match up the right wiring when you install the new unit. Then just follow this video to get the CarPlay running. Hope that helps! Don’t forget to like and sub!

I was quoted $700 by the ford dealership to get Apple CarPlay working (with phone charger plugged into usb) not wireless. Just wanted to see how much it would cost me for all parts to do it myself

@@brandonbusch2080 cheapest I can find is $750 with a $50 coupon. You may be better off going with the dealer. They probably have a way to put it in with your old system. Sorry man! There is also this new thing called the “magic box” that should give you wireless CarPlay for $500, but I’ve never used it.

It’s less about the model year and more about the tech set up you have. If you have the sync 3 system installed you can do it. If you have anything else you’ll have to upgrade the system first. Here’s the best priced upgrade kit I can find. Mind you this will not come with Apple CarPlay, you’ll still have to follow this video once you’ve upgraded the system. Hey Oscar, They don’t look any different but they are. The one where I give the number off has Apple CarPlay hardware built into it. The original does not.

Thanks Quentin! Yes, you can still use the stock Nav when you drive the truck - however when Apple CarPlay is “active” you have to use those maps. The sync unit will disable the ability to use the stock Nav. I’ve found Google maps to be far more accurate and easier to understand then the stock Nav and the Apple Maps that comes with the Apple CarPlay. You can download Google maps for free.
