I'm NixOS user. But I don't think that it should be compared with Archlinux because both distro has unique selling preposition. NixOS (Nix) comes with 3 USP: • declarative • reliable • reproducible While Arch comes with KISS philosophy made it as DIY distro and has strong positioning here. I agree to call Archlinux as minimalist and simplest distro from their philosophy. The problem is how far do we know about Archlinux? Maybe it's not good as we know about NixOS.

Nix and Arch are just two different things. Arch is just a very "vanilla" linux flavour whose main advantage is forcing you to learn all the basic fundamentals to get a working system. Nix does its own thing and diverges from vanilla linux quite a bit (no FHS, everything must have specified dependencies, no accidental configuration drift). The two just share the aspect of being customizable.
@BlackTakGolD5 ай бұрын
I use NixOS but I don't think there's a real need to compete it with other distros like arch, the goals are simply different, imperative management is easier but less predictable, declarative management is more predictable(reproducible?) but more work, they're not even trying to be comparable, NixOS is not FHS compliant, which some people would go as far as to say this makes it harder to even say that it is a Linux distribution, I wouldn't go that far though.
@BosonCollider5 ай бұрын
This. They are different in the same way that RHEL and Arch are different. Nix and Arch just have in common that they are both quite customizable and have way more up-to-date packages.

I feel like NixOS would be suitable not for desktop, but the server side of Linux, due to its reproducibility. You could make a config file on your pc and implement said config on each of the servers. This could be very useful for a kubernetes cluster where you’ve got multiple servers that should contain the same packages and configs, and easy upgrades whenever it’s time to add to the cluster. However I feel like on desktop, it would become cumbersome to manage all of these config files, instead of just telling the computer to install the package, and if necessary clamp the version. Also, for rolling back to a stable version of your system, timeshift backups work great
@BosonCollider5 ай бұрын
Installing packages on nixos is not actually difficult. Add the package you want to your list of packages using your favourite text editor, reload, done. Getting a development environment working would be the hard part since you basically have to specify what you use upfront at the level needed to make a package out of it, instead of writing a dockerfile later & just shipping the entire machine around your app as many devs do now, or leaving it to ops/packaging experts as was the case in the old days. Nix is basically built by packaging/devops people for packaging/devops people.

I tried both Archlinux is still superior for most use cases, NixOS is cool but it's mainly a configuration abstraction and if a software isn't supported you are stuck
@dyamineu52465 ай бұрын
The issue with NixOS (as a user) remains the fact that packages need to adapt to it (fhs non compliant, all dependencies need to be declared, etc) however as it's popularity rises I think it can become the top distro. What is weird is that the system does not behave in the same way we expect a Linux distro to (ro file system), but it does fit quite well to the Linux philosophy.
@adjbutler5 ай бұрын
i am the maintainer of decent-sampler package and it is fhs non compliant (a real headache) but I made it work because nix does have escape hatches that you can use to make anything work.... just gotta work through the problem... (only been in NixOS for 12 months)
@sussybaka77215 ай бұрын
This is a rebuttal for arch and I'll tell you why I disagree, pacman includes a tool called vercmp which lets you pin package versions with just a command in the terminal rolling back and rolling forward just use timeshift and package versions conflicts? that never happens pacman solves dependencies extremely well And about the nix repository vs aur, this is very debatable and has no clear truth to it since u can find more random apps on aur and also nixpkgs has the unstables and some software is fragmented on it for example it has every extension of vscode as a package so u have to install it individually I use Arch, BTW
@MyllowMedia5 ай бұрын
the thing is you can simply use nix packages on arch (as user) for servers I think nix would be more appropriate

I've used Arch from 2015 to 2021, switched to Void due to stability issues.. Even though Void never broke and had zero issues, their repos are tiny. I really wanted to use Hyprland but it isn't available for Void officially, so I learned in the official Hyprland page that NixOS and Arch were officially supporting it. As I didn't want to go back to Arch, I tried NixOS and got hooked to it. I can see it overtaking both Arch and Debian as it has the best of both worlds, stable and but yet bleeding edge.
