Hi Fabian, I follow you since 1 year. Very good videos indeed! The little zoo where the ibexes were brought is the "Widpark Peter und Paul" in St.Gallen. My mother's family comes from there and I have many fond memories of our visits of that zoo, 60 years ago with my grand-parents and aunt. It still exists. Now I live in Canada but when my own children were kids I never missed to go there during our vacations. Thank you for bringing up these beautiful memories!

Nice vlog and beautiful photos Fabian! I just discovered your channel while searching for other ibex content here. I published my vlog at almost the same time, about photographing ibex in Julian Alps in Italy. Would love to see them in Gran Paradiso some day. It's their origin, as you say, they were hunted also in our area until they were gone.

With the arrival of the R5 Mark II, I added an R5 to my gear, and your comprehensive review was very useful. Thanks. I am slightly confused, though, by the AF configuration. If you are using AF-On for eye tracking, doesn't it get over-ridden by the shutter button spot focus when you take the photo?

I have used all three brand. Ergonomic wise I don’t like Sony body it is just not comfortable in hand. My main are Nikon with all its big lens and coming from D4 D5 D850 to Z6/7 now z9. I still use the FL E 400 and 800 lens. I do own an R5 and had a few RF lens 28-70 f2 and 85 1.2. I have to say for auto focus R5 now R1 and R3 are hands down the best. But for lens nothing compare to z400 and z600 TC. By the way I really love the RF 100-300 and I think it will pair well with R5 and I also love the Sony 300 2.8 GM only 3 Lb. Maybe time to get an A9iii or A1 ii. But bank acct gonna suffer lol.

I got the TTArtisans version of this dot sight yesterday (half the price of the Olympus) and used it for the first time with my Fuji XT5 and 150-600mm shooting handheld BIF. The limitations you describe are spot on and I had to recalibrate several times after my forehead brushed against it and caused it to move slightly in the hot shoe. I'll try it again using it primarily as a aid to finding the bird in the viewfinder. A somewhat useful gadget, but you really need to check the viewfinder for focus.

I don't think FF shooters are idiots. I have shot both formats and enjoyed both (Canon, Panasonic/Leica and more recently Olympus). Full frame is clearly more capable. If had the money and body (I'm 72 years old), I'd still be a FF shooter - Canon.Nikon or Sony are clearly more capable in terms of resolution, noise, dynamic range, bokeh and a certain IQ that (as a long time MFT shooter) is a hard to quantify - the Jis (just is?) that twitchers recognize. But, I continue to shoot MFT (Olympus OM1, 300 F4, 40-150 2.8 and 150-600). The reason is weight and value. Most hobbyists (especially wildlife shooters) just don't ahve the pockets that you do - nor the energy. Great channel, I continue to follow you, despite my $$ constraints!! Oh, and IS on Olympus is terrific - significantly better than my Canon 6D. Glass is also excellent and cheaper.

Great video. Thank you for sharing your experiences. At 3:35 you speak about the FF capturing 4x the light and 2 stops better ISO performance. Can you explain that a little more? So if you took both sensors at 1/600, F4, ISO 800. The FF would be two stops "brighter"?
@FabianFoppNaturephotography
@FabianFoppNaturephotography 4 күн бұрын
No, the brightness would be the same, since it describes the intensity of light (photons/area). But if you shoot both at 800 ISO than the image quality of the MFT will look more like 3200 ISO on a full frame

While much of what you’re saying is correct, your comment about pushing in post being worse is factually incorrect for many modern sensors. Those sensors are ISO-invariant or effectively ISO-invariant over certain ranges, as is the case with many dual-gain sensors. For example, on the A1, shooting at ISO 500 and bringing it up in post will give you an image that is nearly indistinguishable from one shot at ISO 3200. The advantage of this approach is that bright lights will retain more detail. When it comes to ISO, it’s important for people to understand the specific characteristics of their sensor and its gain structure rather than relying on general advice, which is often inaccurate. Ultimately, like you mentioned the best practice is always to get more light onto your sensor, whether that’s achieved through a longer exposure or a wider aperture, depending on the situation.
@FabianFoppNaturephotography
@FabianFoppNaturephotography 5 күн бұрын
Thanks! Yes, I agree, but it's really only ISO 500 for the A1. I tried to keep it general, but maybe I was too broad on this one.
@elispiegel8048
@elispiegel8048 5 күн бұрын
@FabianFoppNaturephotography It is not just the a1, many full frame cameras for at least the last few generations exhibit partial(minimal noise impact from increasing exposure in post) or total invariance over at least some of their ISO range. I am not up to date on Canon but they have historically had less invariance than Nikon and Sony, both use Sony sensors. Overall your other tips are good but this specific tip is misleading for some of your viewers. It is unlikely to hurt their images but it also won't help.

I have Topaz Photo AI 2.1.4 and find the standalone versions better. Thank you in advance for your inputs.

@FabianFoppNaturephotography I note that while "getting a lens that lets in more light" is the most expensive solution, I think all the shots demonstrated in the video are shot using a full-frame sensor camera at 300mm-600mm f/4.5 or more, most at around f/4, the squirrel one at 200mm f/2.8. Personally I'm basically only shooting birds. I'm struggling with my R7 + 100-500 f/f4.5-7.1 even before sunset (I live in Sweden btw, near Malmö, but still gets dark early now) because I get both more noise due to the R7 sensor and then a small aperture at 500mm. I understand the point of the video, but it's not quite convincing me 😉 I'd like to see a demonstration using a crop sensor camera and one of the tele zoom lenses you have (100-400 or 100-500) that have smaller aperture. Right now all I'm thinking is: Maybe I really do need that 600 f/4 after all 😉😁
@gregmonforton4103
@gregmonforton4103 5 күн бұрын
For a very mild help, consider backing off your zoom to 472mm (which is barely anything compared to 500mm really) which will give you access to F6.3 instead of F7.1.
@Synthpeter
@Synthpeter 5 күн бұрын
@@gregmonforton4103 Yeah, I know.. But compared to an 600/4 still it's like 1.3 stops slower at ~80% of the focal range.. But ok, since I'm on APS-C, to get 600mm equivalent I could in theory go down to 375mm which would allow f/5.6. But that is still 1 stop slower than f/4.0. Now we're not even mentioning the f/2.8 and f/3.2 shots in the video 😁 I guess the conclusion is if you can't afford it you gotta learn to make the best of what you have 🤪
@gregmonforton4103
@gregmonforton4103 5 күн бұрын
@@Synthpeter Agreed! Another conclusion: "it's too dark for good bird photos right now and right here". I've also found that low-light is flat light, and it's usually boring even if you can get the exposure acceptable.
@FabianFoppNaturephotography
@FabianFoppNaturephotography 5 күн бұрын
I guess it depends on the situation. The same techniques apply, but obviously with a 600/4 you can just shoot in darker environments than with a 100-500
@FabianFoppNaturephotography
@FabianFoppNaturephotography 5 күн бұрын
The aperture values don’t change by stops, they are continuous. It’s just that the camera only shows it in 1/3rd stops. But if you go from 471 to 472mm, you don’t loose 1/3 of a stop of light

The modern mirrorless cameras with electronic shutters (no shutter shock), IBIS, and newer telephoto lenses can very easily shoot 1/50th at 600mm. I usually start with higher shutter speeds and ISOs and then quickly bring them down as I'm shooting. Almost always I get photos with lower ISO and slow shutter speeds that come out great! This is also why I like to take a walking stick out so I can rest the camera on it in a pinch. I've photographed owls at 800mm, 1/50th of a second with X-H2S with it just resting on my walking stick.

In my experience, do not spend any quality time with Canon pro bodies if you don’t want to end up buying one. They can not be defined by the specs. Other cameras just feel “less than” afterwards. For some kinds of wildlife the 24 Megapixels could be an issue but you knew that going in. Good luck!!! I’m sure you’ll get great use out of it.

@@FabianFoppNaturephotography hey Fabian, well, when I went to pick up my new baby (RF200-800) the shop had a R1...so I asked to have a quick play with it. I have small hands, so it was an immediate dislike for me - it's much larger than the R3 and the grip is too large and very uncomfortable for me. I can reach the video on/off toggle switch with my R3, not so with the R1 (not that I shoot much video to be honest, I'm a stills kind of guy). The R3 fits much, much, much better in my hands, more like the older 1D/1DIIn that I have (yes, I still have them!). I had a play with the EVF and whilst I didn't have my R3 to compare it to, it didn't feel larger than my R3. Without a direct comparison in real time though, it's hard to be sure, since the mind can play funny tricks on you in situations like that. I was saving for an EF600f4II, but that was going to take another 3-4 years. By the time I had the money, Canon would have discontinued servicing/repairing the lens (my contacts at Canon Australia CPS have told me that this will happen in 2029). Since I am 55, and I hope to retire when I'm 68, I am planning to retire, and access my superannuation fund savings to buy a used RF600f4 II (should be a II by that stage). By then we should be up to a R5IV and R1 II (at least, if not III). In the interim, I decided to get the RF 200-800, to use alongside my EF 500f4 IS L (mark 1). Whilst the optics on this lens are still top notch, the IS performance is poor, and the AF can't, imho, keep up with BIFs (but it still very usable for perched birds). So, the RF200-800 will be used alongside my 500 prime and both will need to last me until I retire. My next goal is to save for a used original R5 (I am not fussed with things like pre-capture). I will use the R5 (with grip) for most of my birding photography, and the R3 for lower light rainforest birding photography, as well as general street photography and portraiture and landscapes. I really do love my R3, but it would have been much better with 35mp. Canon's post sale firmware support has been truly horrendous imho. Canon should have taken a leaf out of Nikon's book, but instead, like Sony, employs the firmware CrippleHammer™ (FCH).

I vowed never to use another Canon camera....until I started using Sony cameras..... which I disliked so much that I took a $2,500 hit to move back to Canon. Nikon cameras are too heavy. I got severe tendonitis when using a Sony camera due to their Industrial design. And Canon is a company that emphasizes profit at the expense of their customer satisfaction... much more so than other camera companies I think. Not a lot of good choices.. But, at the end of the day, Canon cameras are the most comfortable to use, the most ergonomic, and have the best looking pictures straight out of camera which is almost all I shoot.

I shoot with a 500mm prime and 1.4x TC, for 700mm focal length. Only the RF200-800 outmatches this combo in terms of focal length, but it is optically inferior. The R3 and 24mp is fine if you can get close to your subject and fill the frame. It can still take nice environmental shots with the bird smaller in the frame. It is not great when it comes to cropping. As an example, I can shoot in crop mode with the R5 and still get an 18mp image. A tad smaller than the 24mp in the R3/R1, and with a 1.6x crop factor for extra reach.
